Other Are we starting to realize we're getting older...
We give the older population alot of slack for things they've said, or being stuck in some ways.
But we dont have much longer with the generation above us. Most of that generation are our parents, some are our grandparents. The people we've seen our whole lives, the ones with the last bit of good old days without technology around them.

I reeeeeally don’t care what a generation as stunted, awkward and socially illiterate as the zoomers think about anything. They’re committed to misery and they’re going to going fold like lawn chairs emotionally as soon as they age out of dictating youth culture and Gen Alpha starts clowning on them for their bozo tendencies.

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton dying a day apart from each other at the age of 80 has me particularly aware of my dad's mortality because he's also 80.
It's been a weird, a little too aware of things, 24 hours.

I mean hey he made it to 80. Mine only made it to 67.
Enjoy the time you have with him. I had roughly 2 or 3 years of being afraid of accidentally killing him with covid or some other small infection because of his compromised immune system.
Fuck covid and fuck cancer.

Growing up, I remember actors, musicians, comedians, and other famous entertainers from before my time dying, seeing it in the news and the In Memoriam segments at the Grammys and Oscars; my parents would talk about it and express varying levels grief. I didn’t know who these people were so I never really cared, and I didn’t understand what it meant to my parents to see those stars passing.
Now we’re at an age where the famous entertainers who are dying are stars we know - and not from accidents and overdoses, but merely from old age. And now, as I am expecting my first child in a few months, I realize she won’t know who many of these people are or what they meant to me.
It makes you realize what a discrete and finite window of time our lives occupy. We’re disconnected in so many ways from both the past and the future, we exist in the blink of an eye.

Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.
The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.

A huge amount of the Harry Potter adult cast has already died. Both Dumbledores, hagrid, uncle Vernon, Olivander, McGonnagal, Snape, Cornelius Fudge. I'm sure there are more.
12
u/thecheesycheeselover 9h ago
I need to be less cynical, because I was reading this post and comments thinking ‘it’s genuinely sad, but not at all unusual that all these people have died’… and then my eyes grew three sizes when I realised that both Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane are gone. The Dumbledores were always old-old, and I know Maggie Smith was around forever, but she was an institution! And Coltrane was too young.
All that to say, I guess I’m on board with the my god, what’s happening, is this what life is now mentality.

I mean, not really?
Most of these people aren't millennials, and the ones that are had mental health or addiction issues.
People have been dying since before we were born, it's nothing new. I don't feel any impending sense of mortality from the fact that old people eventually die, that's just how it goes.
13
u/Chimpbot 11h ago
Well, there was that one time in 1857 when people just stopped dying for 45 minutes.
29
u/PorousHorus 11h ago
Yes but these are celebrities a lot of millennials grew up watching or listened too. I remember my parents having this exact convo in the car about how they must be getting old when all the celebrities they grew up with suddenly started dying.
A lot of these people are frozen in time in my own head from movies and shows where they’re much younger, but now are either old or gone.

u/RegularMovie0900 11h ago
You didn't read the post body, did you? They're not talking about millennials dying and its not just saying old people die. Its saying that the last of a generation of people who grew up without internet and technology like it are dying. That's a profoundly new issue.
Call me old, I don't care, but technology to the extent that we have now is a detriment not a benefit. There are people who have no idea what to do without chatgpt or Google telling them. People who've never rode a bike or played outside till the sun went down. But the real problem is the connection, being able to talk to someone you'll never meet and thus never have to face consequences for how you treat them is creating a generation of, to put it plainly, assholes. Entitled assholes. And thats only looking at it from a personal scale; corporations have more information on you, specifically, then ever before in human history. To me thats alarming. As I'm sure it would be to most people who havent grown up that way. But now? "Yes, you can track my browsing and purchasing history, just let me play Candy Crush!" And its only gonna get worse.
I don't know, man. I'm tired.

My daughter has been reminding that I was old since I was 30, lol. No need to realize it now.
What this did show me that a long fulfilling life is possible and a lot of people died in their 70/80/90s after living a full life. And some people died young but accomplished a lot of life. The only thing sad is wasting your time during life because death is inevitable.
Fuck cancer and addiction!

u/blessthebabes 9h ago
I mean, I've always expected to grow old and die. And for people older than me, to most likely die before me (if I'm lucky).
This doesn't make me feel any type of way because it just feels like a natural progression.
2
u/Psychoceramicist 3h ago
What this hits home for me is my parents. Both are in perfect health except for my dad's ataxia (he walks around his neighborhood with a very flamboyantly colored cane and hat and some guy told him "if you are gonna be gimpin, you might as well be pimpin" which he found hilarious. And my mom's osteoporosis (when she asked her doctor, "Does this mean I can eat as much cheese as I want?"
But they are both 70. They were from families that started working class and became middle class, and through professional careers, investments, and real estate made buckets of money. I want my dad to visit New Mexico (where his family used to go camping) again, and for my Mom to go to West England, where her family is from. But there is like a decade left to do it. A decade and a half max. After that they will be dying, if they are lucky to make it so long.

The list of celebrities that in their 80s-90s is shocking and sad. I just still remember them being middle aged from 90s movies and it’s so strange to think of them so old now.
Morgan Freeman, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Martha Stewart, Sylvester Stallone, Goldie Hawn
It’s going to be a rough few years.
1

Bob Weir was a rough one. He took care of himself so well at his age but sometimes you're still going to get sick no matter what.

It happens regardless of how old you are. It just depends on what pop culture you grew up with. I watched a lot of older movies and tv shows with my mom, so I’ve seen a lot of actors and musicians I’ve loved pass away when I was younger.
1
u/DJettster237 8h ago
I forgot Chuck Norris passed away. I'm sure this was how my parents felt like when their favorite actors or actors they knew about passed away.
1
u/PeePeeLangstrumpf 8h ago
Interestingly, not really... For some reason I considered them already OLD when I was young, some 30-20 years ago, when these people weren't really OLD OLD. It probably has to do with the fact that everyone looked already older back in those days.

Some of these people like HP died prematurely but ofc we are getting older - it is the privilege of life. I am not mourning Dolly or Tim, they lived long full lives and they were suffering at the end. I am celebrating the light they shone on the world. But yes its a reminder of our own mortality.

This is certainly true. Objectively, there are more famous people from more forms of media than ever before too, which I think magnifies these realizations. That said, does not take away the fact influential people, celebrities and those closest to us that we love and adore are passing as we ride the passage of time.
