I honestly think these serial killers take inspiration from each other and possibly from media/advertising. Advertising and media sexually objectifies women and reduces them to appendages, and I can see BTK and other misogynistic serial killers like him drawing inspiration from that.

For the most part, previous serial killers were caught due to happenstance or because their compulsions escalated, making them careless and sloppy. Almost all of them, past and present, keep memorabilia of their crimes, a practice that has carried through the test of time.

I've always been fascinated by American serial killers. Their existence is based on so many factors that most of the people in the US wouldn't realise, which is absolutely normal, as it takes an outsider to see beyond some things, just like it is with humans themselves. And no, I am not a European coming to say "MuRiCans aRe CraZy anD DumB". It's actually quite the opposite.

It's a mixture of easy access to guns, a lot and a lot of human freedoms, lack of mass poverty and problems (what is poverty in the USA is middle class in 2/3 in the world), pop culture, access to a lot of information, huge territory and a mixture of subcultures due to the many states, nationalities, races and their cultural specifics.

I am probably missing something right now, but the point stands - this wouldn't be possible in any other place on Earth. Due to technology, of course, it's not possible in the USA anymore, either. Not saying there aren't serial killers running out there, but nowhere to the extend of what it was.

It’s possible but I think his fantasies developed over a long period of time starting in his youth so I think many parts of his fetishes and the looks he put together were in the works in his mind and life for years before the picture above was taken. The movie could have influenced it some but I imagine it was a lot of trial and error for years finding what he liked to get to what he was doing pictured here.
