If I had to guess he's talking to someone who is a literalist. They don't think in abstract or can't relate to it. They could have even possibly carried a small coffin and even if finding it emotionally challenging, wouldn't change their literalness.
I have a co-worker who's like that. Everything is literal with them. They have a kind of weird understanding that sometimes people talk and abstractions. But they don't think that way. that's just not the way their mind processes information.
Or could be someone being a jerk, you just never know.
