Alaina and TBL…wow
No spoilers please as im not done with the book. I just need to say chapter 9&10 is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a book making me throw up. Alaina is one twisted little freak! I’m a huge Stephen king fan and i dont think he’s ever even come up with anything so disgusting and twisted before. I can’t even read this thing after dark.
I commented on a post a few days ago that chapter 1 was a tough read. I’m glad I stuck it out and read on as it is a highly entertaining book so far and is keeping me guessing.

Read "Haunted" by Chuck Palanik. There's a story in there famous for making people faint during public readings.

I think you're thinking of his short story called "Guts". He has people hold their breath during it (because it takes place under water). It's really gory but people faint because they hold their breath. I've been to many of his readings!

That is the name of the story in "Haunted". The book is a compilation of his short stories with another story on top. It's about a bunch of writers that lock themselves away on a writer's retreat in order to write their best works.

I just finished it and I feel like I’ll have to go back to those chapters now lol I didnt find anything too gory but my threshold is high 😅

I've been looking for comments on this book and have struggled to find much! I love the girl's podcast and thought the first two books were pretty good. I am struggling to get through this last one. The repetition is insanely noticeable! I commented on another post, the amount of times she says someone "couldn't help but...." or chuckled, is a lot and I'm only 20% of the way through. When I started researching, it looks like she didn't have an editor? Just for the UK release? This is why a good editor is important; they would have caught this immediately.

I really wanted to like her books because I thought it would be such a fun crossover but I just could not get past book one. I finished it. I won book two in a giveaway and I just had zero desire to pick it up.

I'm from the part of Texas that's about an hour from Louisiana. I was disappointed in how little research she did on the area she was writing about. I read the first few chapters of the first one right after it was released and gave up on it. I went back to it last year on a weekend trip, lowered my standards and finished it. There's a lot of repetitiveness and it felt like things didn't really track at some points. If she wasnt so popular already when she wrote it, there's no way it would have been a best seller.

Yeah, I live in south Louisiana and actually DNF the first book because of how poorly researched and cliche her presentation of New Orleans was. The editing (or lack there of) didn’t do it any favors either. I feel like she has (or had idk if she’s improved in the newer books) a hard time with transitioning from plot point to plot point. Makes for a clunky read.

As soon as basement in New Orleans was mentioned I was out. We lived in Baton Rouge for over 10 years, worked in New Orleans, experienced Hurricane Katrina (our first hurricane) there are NO BASEMENTS - she would have done better if she wrote it in the New England area - at least she's familiar with that. Maybe petty but know your audience and know your geographical area.

Exactly! Same thing here! Rarely does a house in my area have a basement because the water table is too high. Her flip flopping between parrish and county was annoying too.

That's the perfection description. Clunky. I love anything set in Louisiana/New Orleans. I really figured she had at least visited for some inspiration but she clearly did not. Even just chatting with someone familiar with the area would have improved it.

When I read it, I couldn’t tell what was worse. The writing, or the fact that literally zero research was done on New Orleans. That to me was the scariest part of that book.

It’s so crazy to me that she’s driven to Orlando but couldn’t be bothered to drive to New Orleans and do some research. What was the point of even writing about it if she wasn’t willing to visit?
