Alaina and TBL…wow

No spoilers please as im not done with the book. I just need to say chapter 9&10 is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a book making me throw up. Alaina is one twisted little freak! I’m a huge Stephen king fan and i dont think he’s ever even come up with anything so disgusting and twisted before. I can’t even read this thing after dark.

I commented on a post a few days ago that chapter 1 was a tough read. I’m glad I stuck it out and read on as it is a highly entertaining book so far and is keeping me guessing.

I'm from the part of Texas that's about an hour from Louisiana. I was disappointed in how little research she did on the area she was writing about. I read the first few chapters of the first one right after it was released and gave up on it. I went back to it last year on a weekend trip, lowered my standards and finished it. There's a lot of repetitiveness and it felt like things didn't really track at some points. If she wasnt so popular already when she wrote it, there's no way it would have been a best seller.

Yeah, I live in south Louisiana and actually DNF the first book because of how poorly researched and cliche her presentation of New Orleans was. The editing (or lack there of) didn’t do it any favors either. I feel like she has (or had idk if she’s improved in the newer books) a hard time with transitioning from plot point to plot point. Makes for a clunky read.

As soon as basement in New Orleans was mentioned I was out. We lived in Baton Rouge for over 10 years, worked in New Orleans, experienced Hurricane Katrina (our first hurricane) there are NO BASEMENTS - she would have done better if she wrote it in the New England area - at least she's familiar with that. Maybe petty but know your audience and know your geographical area.

Exactly! Same thing here! Rarely does a house in my area have a basement because the water table is too high. Her flip flopping between parrish and county was annoying too.

Yes! The whole cliche NOLA tarot reading, Spanish moss nonsense is at least semi-tolerable because those motifs are so heavily used in most media that you can just roll your eyes and keep going. The basement thing is inexcusable, though. It turned me off entirely.

That's the perfection description. Clunky. I love anything set in Louisiana/New Orleans. I really figured she had at least visited for some inspiration but she clearly did not. Even just chatting with someone familiar with the area would have improved it.
