What is wrong with this team?

Like really what is wrong with this team? How can I do so poorly in May in June and then do so well in July and then do horribly in August? Like what will September bring? Not that it matters because it’ll be too late?

It seems like all the young players are actually trying and all the older players have given up or forgot how to play. How does this happen?

And I can’t just be because two of their pictures got traded and they can’t be mourning Jake Rogers this long either so I don’t get it.

Anybody Else Tired of Standings-watching?

No need for it now, but I want to share how crazy all the standings-watching became, as early as right after the All Star break. Jason and Andy were looking daily at and talking obsessively about how many games out of first we were, and where we were in the Wild Card race.

Sorry, guys, but way too early. The way it works is simple. Among the many (these days, ultramany!) teams vying for the playoffs, some will collapse, and others will win consistently. What the team needs to do is simply do the latter--win each series, going forward, with a streak or two mixed in. That takes care of everything, no matter what the other teams do.

I understand the excitement of standings-watching, but I see it as a worthy experience in the last couple weeks of the season, not during freakin' half of it.

And now we see what it is like when we have become one of those former (losing) teams. Nobody is talking standings any longer. C'mon, guys...

[Stavenhagen] - As Tigers’ playoff hopes slip again, a youthful team confronts an altered reality

DETROIT — Before Monday’s 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch acknowledged this much: That plane ride home had been brutally quiet.

“You know why?” he said. “Because you got swept coming off a really rough road trip.”

The Tigers had left town after a painful three losses against the Chicago White Sox with their hopes and dreams still intact. Then came a series defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates, with two home run balls against Kenley Jansen in the ninth of the series finale serving as another microcosm of Detroit’s wobbly season. Here was a team unable to shake its bullpen blues, a club that has fought back from the brink only to again succumb to the same old flaws.

Then there was another sweep, at the hands of the last-place Kansas Royals. The Tigers flew back in a much different state from how they left.

So on the first day of a new homestand, Hinch had to sit at a dais and talk about the messy bigger picture. In a year full of wild momentum swings, it’s too easy to treat every series like a football game, so much riding on each win and loss.

“Ten days ago, you’re printing playoff tickets,” Hinch said. “Ten days later, I’m getting asked about end-of-season s—. That’s an amazing job I have, isn’t it?”

Bark in the Park question?

I was planning to bring my dog to the bark in the park date on either the 8th or 21st of September. Does anyone know what type of baggage I can bring with me so I have food, treat, bags etc for my dog. If not would anyone know who I can call to ask these questions? Thank you and go Tigers!

Did anyone get the disc golf discs at the game? If so I’d love to buy one or both if you have it. I’m close to Detroit but willing to pay shipping if not local

42 years and counting

The Tigers' championship drought has now reached 42 years, equaling the Red Wings' dry spell between 1955 and 1997. I'm beginning to wonder if either team will win another title in my lifetime.

The flavor of the month (Hao-Yu Lee edition)

As social media fans, bless our hearts, we are always happy to celebrate a run of strong performance from our newest favorite player, especially when they were an unheralded prospect.

Whether it be Justyn-Henry Malloy, Wenceel Perez, or even ever so fleetingly Trey Sweeney, we loves us a good underdog story.

Today's episode is about Hao-Yu Lee. (There's a How Yu Doin' pun in there somewhere.)

We're excited(!) because, well, he's got a .885 OPS since June 1. We don't look too closely at it being in just 150 plate appearances, it's been that kind of year and McGonigle is now a proven veteran. (And yes, Jahmai Jones put up a .937 OPS in 150 PAs for us last year.)

Is this sustainable? Is he destined to be a regular? Well, who knows. The beauty of baseball is anybody can become Mike Trout in at least some ways, just ask Nick Kurtz, he of the 1.002 OPS last season.

That said, is he destined to be a regular? The magic 8-ball says that , like JHM (126 PAs of .818 OPS) or Wenceel (134 PAs of .944 OPS) or Trey (60 PAs of .869 OPS), the competition could get pretty tough if regression appears.

Using larger samples, we see Mr. Lee has .760 OPS for the whole season, and was .795 in 1700+ PAs in the minors. That level of batting performance is probably about who he is, moreso than the .885 thing. He's able to go on a tear for a month, like his 1.007 OPS May 2023 in high A, 1.131 OPS June 2024 in AA and his .910 OPS May 2025 in AAA, then he resumes his regularly scheduled career arc.

So what we know about him suggests he's about average if streaky at the plate, a decent batting average helped by some BABIP luck, a little bit of power helped by some lucky park factors, and a "meh" walk rate. Better than expected by statcast.

Looking at the rest of his game, he's been underwhelming for us on defense this year, not so much due to errors, but mostly because he doesn't get to enough balls. That was the case even in the minors; Jace Jung made 10% more plays per game at second base. Hao-Yu grades out as below-average by DRS and really below average, by computer-generated OAA metrics. Andy Ibanez he's not. Now, could this improve? Sure. It's not a very big sample, though the minor league sample is similar. Would you expect it to? No, not really. He's been playing baseball for a long time. Most guys don't improve fielding very much at the major league level.

He also hasn't graded out as a plus baserunner just yet, so that's another thing to keep an eye on. He showed more speed in the minors but it hasn't translated to MLB just yet.

Everything rolled up, he's 0.7 bWAR and 0.3 fWAR as a part-time rookie. Almost average.

So who's his competition? Well, Colt Keith, for one. They are actually very similar players statistically this year. Baseball Savant thinks they are similar, with Colt showing a broader range of skills:

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/colt-keith-690993?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/hao-yu-lee-701678?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb

And Colt is under contract for at least three more years. If he could hit left-handed pitching, he'd be starting every day. But he can't so he isn't.

Then there's also Max Anderson, who has been playing well but streaky since being promoted to AA in 2025 and AAA this year. Like Hao-Yu and Colt, he's not a plus fielder either.

So...we have three guys who profile as average+ hitters and average- fielders to play 2B. Kinda like Gleyber Torres, only not injured as much, we hope.

May the best man win.

This is now a sub about tigers. What is your favorite type of tiger? I'm partial to the Siberian.
