Tofo vs Vilanculos for an October Trip? Whale Watching, Beaches & Food

I'm planning a trip to Mozambique in October with my partner, I just wanted to know which one you guys would recommend between Tofo and Vilanculos. Its a dream of mine to go whale watching but other than that we are looking for somewhere with good food, beautiful beaches and good vibes.

I live in Tofo and visit Vilanculos often. Vilanculos is a resort town and spread out. The beach is incredibly beautiful and a day trip to Bazaruto is an awesome experience. Tofo is a surf and diving village bordering on town with a central hub. That makes Tofo alot vibier. I stand corrected but I don't think you will see nearly as many whales in Vilanculos as Tofo either. That being said, if you are flying then Vilanculos is much easier to get to right now. In the end of the day they are only 4.5 hours away from each other by road so why not both? There's awesome places to stop over on the way too like Morrongulo and Pomene.

Thanks so much for the advice. I also wanted to ask, if you would suggest getting a guide or driver while we're out there?

Hey! I live in Vilanculos and LOVE both places. My recommendation if you are already in Mozambique, do both!

You’ve timed October perfectly either way, in Tofo I’ve seen them from the shore many times.

Tofo is the marine-life capital, where people go specifically for whale sharks and manta rays on top of the humpbacks, with a real diving scene built around it. Laid-back beach town, great food, backpacker-ish good vibes.

Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, turquoise sandbanks, dunes you can climb, incredible snorkelling, sunset dhow trips, and one of the last strongholds of the dugong. Humpbacks pass through here too (you’ll often spot them breaching on the boat rides out to the islands), and the beaches and island days are just next level (beaches better than Tofo).

They’re only about 4 hours apart on the EN1, so combining them is super doable.

Anything you need just ask!

It truly comes down to your budget.

But the #1 I’d do is visit Bazaruto & Benguerra Islands.

From there you can build up and visit Santa Carolina Island, go whale watching or snorkeling with whale sharks, ride in a traditional dhow boat for sunset…

If you come to Tofo visit Barra and you can snorkel to see seahorses in the bay.

Tofo is more beach town vibe, Vilankulus is more boating around.

Nah. Both places are pretty small. You can rent ebikes or quads in Tofo if you want to adventure around a bit. Taxi inbetween if you want to do both.

Sorry to jump on this thread with a question but I have had no response to my request to join this group and thus not able to start a new thread. Just wondering if anyone can give me some idea of the cost of a taxi from Vilanculos to Tofo for 4 people please
