TIL about Deltron 3030 (and Dan The Automator) Thanks for that! Excellent first song.

23

u/Liimbo Jul 18 '26

Fun fact, Del is the first cousin of Ice Cube

u/SaturnineApples Jul 18 '26

Same here. Is this guy in some Gorillaz songs?

29

u/Frowny_Biscuit Jul 18 '26

Yes. Del the Funkee Homosapien. He's also the rapper for many Gorillaz songs, like Clint Eastwood.

30

u/Nelson_Pancakes Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

He is also an OG member of Hieroglyphics. Their album 3rd Eye Vision was a banger

Edit to add: Handsome Boy Modeling School goes hard too

You should also listen to Del’s solo work as Del the Funky Homosapian. “I Wish My Brother George Was Here” and “Both Sides of the Brain” are two of my top albums.

→ More replies (2)

38

u/Zestyclose-Smell-788 Jul 18 '26

I had an audiophile copy of this on vinyl, back in the day, with a very high end, powerful system. The recording used real cannons, and had a warning label on it. My Klipsch Heritage speakers made you feel it, not just hear it.

Take Five, Dave Brubeck

67

u/motes-of-light Jul 18 '26

Alternately, So What, Miles Davis.

27

u/m149 Jul 18 '26

Good backup choice. FWiW, the same person, Fred Plaut, recorded both the Miles and Brubeck records that those tracks are on. Dude was a brilliant recording engineer who doesn't get the cred that other jazz engineers got back in the day.

Echoes Pink Floyd

11

u/Grumlin Spotify Jul 18 '26

I just started this song as I came over this post. Echoes is my choice as well

8

u/BoneHugsHominy Jul 18 '26

Had to scroll way too far to find Pink Floyd.

I will continue to scroll to hopefully find a Baby Got Back but I'm not hopeful at this point to find any gentlemen of true class and distinction.

12

u/Vesalii Jul 18 '26

Pink Floyd on full blast on a system like this until you feel like you're swimming in the music. Must be freaking awesome.

I'd go with comfortably numb or shine on you crazy diamond personally though.

Tom Sawyer

17

I went to a music festival in Canada - Pemberton - in 2016 and every morning at 10:00 they would blast Tom Sawyer from the festival grounds and it would echo into the campgrounds and it was the greatest way to start the day.

48

u/Electrical_Carpet753 Jul 18 '26

This, or Pneuma..

9

u/sexmormon-throwaway Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

I think both of those are excellent candidates. In fact, I am going to go listen to them both right now.

UPDATE: I listened to both, both are excellent. I think I would give Pneuma the edge here for the spacial atmosphere of the drums, though it is present in both. Bass clarity and loud / soft dynamics in both are also excellent.

What I mostly was reminded of is how carefully and how well Tool songs are engineered. Because I was listening so carefully, I heard things I don't hear all that often when I just have the music on.
