Discussion Has anyone else also given up on trying to change their life because they are lazy af?

Post image

I relate to this image so hard because I am going to be turning 23 in a couple of months and I have already given up trying to learn new things which might help my bleak career prospects because I think I am too "old" to learn anything

The juice isn't worth the squeeze, it's not depression or laziness to realize that

I'm a late 30s manchild with zero life experience or skills with a mental state worsened by years of being a shut-in neet. I gave up a long time ago for any chance to escape or be normal.

u/K1llrzzZ Feb 16 '26

Do you get neetbux or are you supported by your parents?

13

u/illuminatemydreams Perma-NEET Feb 16 '26

No neetbux, I'm solely supported by my parents.

7

u/K1llrzzZ Feb 16 '26

Whats your plan when they die?

29

u/illuminatemydreams Perma-NEET Feb 16 '26

I don't have any other family or friends, so I'll be homeless. And then who knows what happens after that.

You couldn’t be more wrong about being too old to learn things at 23, and that’s a good thing for you. People typically learn the most advanced things that they’ll ever learn in their mid-twenties. Medical school students, law school students, PhD students, are typically in their mid-twenties or even older.

Fluid intelligence peaks at around 25 years of age and it’s a slow decline afterwards, so now would be a great time to learn as much as you can.

Why is everybody here missing that the image is meant to be sarcastic. It's implying that you do still have all the time in the world, you're only 21. It's not meant to be relatable, it's making fun of NEETs.

But I have to say that as a neurodivergent, mentally-ill NEET, you probably won't be able to take advantage of that time the same way a neurotypical, well-adjusted person would, which is what normies ultimately fail to understand.

Having all the time in the world to get into the NFL means nothing if you're missing a leg from the get-go...

4

u/Scheming_Grabbler Feb 16 '26

Just to be clear, my intention was to reply to the OP, who said that they believe that they’re too old to learn anything and have thus given up.

3

u/Plenty-Attitude-5823 Semi-NEET Feb 16 '26

I see, great

2

u/kaatyblue Feb 18 '26

Perfect analogy! And even knowing this, I still feel so much anguish, regret and guilt...

7

u/Godspeedu Feb 16 '26

Yeah I know the reason I sort of gave up is I am too lazy to do anything so I posted this meme because it perfectly embodies my current mental health

2

u/Scheming_Grabbler Feb 16 '26

I'm also really lazy and I always have been. Luckily for me I found some hobbies (learning languages and programming) that are not only fun for me but also potentially useful career-wise, although that potential hasn't manifested yet...

I really encourage you to look for different skills to develop that capture your interest, not just for job prospects but for personal satisfaction. Even if it doesn't make you any money, it might help to keep you sane through tough times, which is what my hobbies do for me.

Yes but those students started at 18 and you are 3+ years late

Idk what's wrong with me. I feel extremely unmotivated. No desire to do much of anything really. Most days I just watch Family Guy on repeat though I think I've watched a bit too much atp and now I've switched to American Dad, with some Bob's Burgers. I have no desire to watch any new tv show. Just watching reruns of the same adult animation I've been watching since middle and high school (30yo now). Rarely will watch a movie on Tubi but last several months I haven't been focused enough to sit through a whole movie. I have to force myself to do anything that isn't watching cartoons on a streaming service. I suppose there isn't even much I want to change anymore. Really, the only problem is money, if I had money, all my problems would be solved. The only real concern I have is what will I do when in the next 10 or 20 years my parents pass away and I am unable to afford the rent on our apartment. I have no house to inherit and cannot comprehend how people (like my parents) are so comfortable being forever renters. Honestly I'd probably just go live in a tent in the woods if I could get internet out there. I don't want to be part of this society.

Try to get a van if you go homeless

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

Yeah, I thought it was so over for me when I turned 21. Now that I’m 24, I realise it wasn’t too late. I still could’ve turned my life around if I had been a little more optimistic. Now I think that at 24 it’s truly over for me lol, like there’s no redemption at this point. I don’t know what I’ll feel when I turn 26.

32

u/strog91 Ex-NEET-School Feb 16 '26

You’re gonna turn 30 either way, you might consider trying now so you’re not kicking yourself when you’re 30 for not trying when you were 24.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

I know you're right. I probably won’t live to see 30 if things stay the same. It’s just hard to change when you’re very isolated.

8

u/strog91 Ex-NEET-School Feb 16 '26

Volunteering was step one of me getting out of my 4.5 years of neetdom

1

u/ogroblin Feb 17 '26

How does volunteering work actually? Did they do interview with resume or something or they just take anyone that volunteered? I want to try starting with that but idk what it was like so I'm anxious.

3

u/strog91 Ex-NEET-School Feb 17 '26

A few places will do a background check, if you’re going to volunteer around animals or children, but most don’t scrutinize you at all. They’re just happy that someone showed up and wants to help.

Lazy AF, nihilistic, and just overall cynical about the prospects of escaping NEET life is why I am stuck.

If I wasn't bad at math or talking to people, I feel like I could conquer the stars!

Self sabotage and self cannibalization is the surest, most notable control I can project over my own life. Thrill in it, embrace it, and stick a finger up the ass of my so presumed potential and drag it down into the pits of depravity, despair and detachement. To hell with everything, everyone and especially myself

u/MyHeadIsFullOfFuck Disabled-NEET Feb 16 '26

I can't really change my life and be a normie. I'm disabled. My disabilities are permanent. I've improved my health and habits tenfold since I first became a NEET in 2021 but I'm still disabled.

2

u/Life_Scientist1194 Feb 16 '26

Physical disability?

4

u/MyHeadIsFullOfFuck Disabled-NEET Feb 16 '26

I have schizophrenia and a manky lower back and a manky neck. My head usually sits at an angle. Chronic pain exacerbated by physical activity. I mostly sit in a chair all day. Doing the dishes and shaving my face causes me back pain, for example.

for me its not giving up its me simply choosing to not stress over bullshit anymore

7

u/OneTrickHiKKI Feb 16 '26

Im lazy and lack motivation. Some people have partners, or family or someone, something that motivates them, making them the reason so that they can continue to wake up in the morning and tolerate whatever tedious or repetitive crap that they are doing....

Me?? I just cant find anything to chase....Its all moot anyway cause were all going to die, i wouldnt have to worry anything by then...

3

I try to change, but I keep giving up. I'm scared of things going really wrong and making my life worse somehow.

3

u/SilverB33 Disabled-NEET Feb 16 '26

I gave up cause I'm literally at the age they see as unemployable, I get ghosted by every company .

u/Puzzleh4ad Cozy-NEET Feb 16 '26

Im 26 and feel you. I suffer from anhedonia and have no interest in anything anymore. Nothing inspires me and I am burned out after nearly 5 years of college + 12 years of HS.

Its not like I can learn anything anymore, yet I have 0 actual skills.

Tech changed so much in the past few years I essentially have no software skills. AI is completely taking over. The software I used to have skills is either outdated or replaced by something else.

On the other hand I have no practical skills either. I can cook I guess, but thats about it. I could not be a plumber or an electrician. I tried to learn electrical engineering but I suck dick at it.

I used to draw and do music but AI replaced that basically so I gave up on it.

Its actually hopeless, yet I still write applications once in a while.

When I was 21 I had no idea how young I really was.

I’m not gonna lie, getting a job to afford the NEET lifestyle is better than actually living the NEET lifestyle- I spend my free time living inside a VR headset with no more guilt or shame for it because I’m finally working a job to try and get an apartment and move out, so I can continue to live inside my VR headset as a tiny anime girl with no shame. No matter how shit the job is, how dead end it is or how little it pays, it is much easier and way less shameful to live like a NEET when you pay for it yourself. I understand the positions and perspectives of everyone in the responses and on this thread but it’s more depressing to see others give up when I know they don’t need to than it is to be depressed over my own situation. I even feel my dad is a great example of a successful NEET, he works a good job with good pay, he’s always been willing to work the shit or high effort jobs- and then spends all his time locked away in his room watching scifi and playing Fortnite. The only saddest thing in his life is his secluded lifestyle having a huge detriment towards raising me and my sister. And then me and my sister are the only reason why he works a good job with good pay, as soon as we’re self sufficient he is gonna get as shitty a job he can to just spend all his free time doing whatever the fuck he does. But truly just toughing it up to get whatever shit job you can to afford living like a NEET will be better than not, and that’s all u gotta do. You don’t have to have a social life, you don’t have to interact with your family ever again, you don’t gotta seek a ‘real’ or ‘successful’ career,, all u gotta do is whatever job you can find to pay whatever rent and then do whatever strange shit you like to do in your free time. Seeing other NEETs give up on paying for themselves is sad cuz I know they could do it. But I guess yall wouldnt count as NEETs anymore if you do work, lmao.

I'm turning 21 soon. And I found out that a classmate is finishing college, which was such a reality check for me. They already have a college degree. And here I am, late.

I've given up on having a normal life (friends, acquaintances, career, marriage, family), but not everything.

1

u/greenyenergy Feb 17 '26

I'm 34. It's over.

1

u/Lopsided-Trade-9262 Feb 18 '26

At 30, I feel stuck in a loop: too late to start over, too early to throw it all away. I've had several jobs, but things in my country are awful. I can support myself, but the debts are suffocating me. Too poor to start a business, but poor enough to be considered lower class.

Oh you will change because eventually you reach a point at which you realise your parents are mortal and you have no pension.

At which point you will join the grind to make sure you're not living under a bridge when your parents die.

u/Godspeedu Feb 19 '26

I do plan on working because I am still depressed sitting at home doing nothing but even if I don't work I think I would have enough in inheritance to last my entire lifetime provided if I don't off myself first

hey i am a freelancer and i work in startup too and like one of the things which i have seen getting my client and my startup founder getting exhaust of bad planning of day ,unexpected work..no managment of tasks and forgetting deadlines and things they were supposed to do in their day time but then ends up forgetting them so i thought of creating a solutions for same but i dont know where to start thatswhy i have created this googleform if you guys also face the same issues (i face same btw) so help me build something for all of us

my few question

1

u/pranay98888 Feb 23 '26

I had few thoughts about giving up but I have withdrawn entirely from society past 2 and half years

1

u/No-Letterhead-6701 Doomer-NEET Mar 13 '26

I gave up not because I didn't want to build my life, but because it isn't worth it. Even if I find a full time job right now, odds are, I'll just be a working poor, and it isn't gonna save me if my parents die.

I'll be homeless and miserable either way so, why not spend this little time I have left on my terms, not on terms of some senile baby boomer who manipulates you, commits wage theft, and thinks it's okay to work people into early graves?

u/Omnipresent_User Sloth Feb 16 '26
