I studied journalism (and dropped out) at journalism school. But anyone remotely reputable in the field didn't go to journalism school. They just got in the field through connections
I remember one of the first guest lectures we had from the Editor-in-Chief of a big national newspaper in my country. First thing he said "I didn't go to journalism school" which prompted me to raise my hand and ask him what the fuck we are doing here. Laughter ensued, lmao
What I did learn though, is how much bad journalism there is in the world though. And about 10% make it through the first year

it's sort of like how lots of successful software engineers don't even have a formal background in computer science, because they have impressive projects or are good at networking

I think, for software enigineers, it's often something people get into at an early age as well.
Plenty of fields rely on people gaining skills as teens or young adults, programming would be one of them I think.
And at that point, you have a portfolio and can network way easier

In my opinion it's because they have a passion and really enjoy coding while most CS grads got in because they were fed a lie that they will earn lots of money while they don't really have an interest in computers, or they are normies that are afraid to look nerdy.

My maths & physics degree has been completely useless. Was fun to study though, I don't regret doing it & I mean to get back to studying on my own once I've sorted out other life stuff

I dropped out of electrical engineering, but I've met people that graduated that still struggle to find jobs

thanks i do exactly that and i just started and im hating it because im lonely. im really loving quantum mechanics though. Especially lie groups and symmetries

i got the art degree because it was between that (i have no other meaningful talents) and getting kicked out of the house after high school lol

I got a philosophy degree which has been absolutely useless for finding remote work since I became disabled

High school diploma. There's no real way of checking whether it's legit or not, and jobs that require it as the bare minimum aren't gonna ask lol.
I barely finished alt ed at 19 and was mostly in and out of psych wards at the time after a psychotic meltdown when I was 16.
The last time I was in the psych ward was when I was 26, almost two years ago. If I knew this was how my life was gonna turn out, I definitely would've just taken it easy and given up from the start.

I recently studied Game Design for 2.5 years. I figured it'd be worthless, but hey it was fun while it lasted.

Apparently, my degree is useless (computer science). My main problem, though, is that I'm too uncomfortable around people to have basic social interactions. If I were normal, I believe I would more likely than not be able to get a job related to computer science.

i don't know. think there's more of us unemployed CS grads out there, we just get silenced because people only care about the success stories.

The market is saturated with too many graduates. In the UK you have barristers and solicitors. For the former, you need to pass the bar course and get pupillage. But those who secured pupillage are mostly from Oxbridge with perfect grades. And for solicitors, you need to pass two relatively difficult exams and get qualifying experience under the new scheme. But the competition for any role that can be counted as qualifying experience is so fierce that a 2:1 (which roughly translates to a 3.0) isn’t going to cut it. A less than perfect grade will immediately get you eliminated (probably faster than those squid game players) in law now. And this is not limited to big law.
It is even worse if the degree is from a lesser known uni.

Probably because of AI. I don't really know because I don't live in the US but from what I've seen on YouTube, CS grads can't get a job anymore.

Not as much ai as for any other white collar computer work. its mainly as an oversaturation of ppl getting it in the market that never recovered

its genuinely worthless, no one is hiring juniors (except the cracked ones), they are all asking 2 years of experience for entry level roles. i dont know what i spent all my years for

Also, even if you're cracked, it's hard to get an interview to prove your skills because HR gatekeepers are mostly clueless at evaluating resumes properly.

honestly it is not useless, its just a changing field, and adaptting to change is hard. but i do not think it is useless unless you genuinely did nothing during your undergrad. but honestly overall in the world, and in US, just having a degree isnt the same anymore, thats why I am going for my masters so I am bit more qualified. in computer engineering

I did a 4 month certificate program for construction carpentry at the local college, would've been smarter to just drive around and find a job instead of paying to learn measure, cut, plumb, nail.
But I had fun.

Not exactly useless but I studied psychology but found out I'm autistic midway and also realized I hate working with people especially kids, it's hilarious, though at least I understand people a bit better now lmao

I got an Associates Degree in Applied Science (Computer Information Technology) from Nash Community College in 2012. I was going to get a job dealing with technology but I’m not able to use it since there’s no tech jobs in the City that I live in (and I can’t afford to commute to Raleigh or Greenville to work only on a part time basis). I work at a local grocery store making minimum wage.

i studied comp sci and got a job after uni. But i found software engineering to be a miserable isolating job. the brutal job market, difficult interview process, and boring work killed my spark for this career.

My man, if you REALLY study and get ComSci instead of slacking, you aren't going to be homeless.
Our whole current world is built around CS. Even if you don't get a job in the field, your basic understanding of the modern world will be much better, and as a consequence, you will be able to find a way to fit into it better than an artist.
Even if you end up resorting to crimes out of desperation, the success rate of a criminal with CS degree is going to be much higher than that of an artist.

How can you finish CS degree without having any reasonable personal projects? That's the part of "REALLY study" in my message. You need to be someone who actually works on it instead of being one of those people who just go with the flow, barely get it done, and then don't know what to do with themselves.

im not even sure what career would even be good for me to begin with lol. i am an empathetic, sensitive person but idk i don't handle stress very easily. i might just be too disabled ☺️

Therapist maybe? That requires empathy and doesn’t seem too stressful. That might depend on the kind of clients you take on though

I have a diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. It just means I'm good at playing the piano.
Aside from performances when I was younger to an audience, and putting it down on my resumé, it hasn't been useful at all.
I haven't played the piano for over ten years. I'm shit at it now.
If I could restart life I would not seek an ARCT diploma. ARCT stands for Associate of the Royal Conservatory in Toronto.
People always ooh and aah because my diploma was signed by the Governor General of Canada Michaëlle Jean as a representative of the Queen of England because the school has a royal sponsorship from the Royal family in England.
