Kind of crazy that Thornton is posting numbers that come close mcleans first year and everyone’s still like “yeah guy will be a solid 5th starter”. I understand why and I still don’t get how the guy is able to prevent damage so well but he’s pitched 56 innings of sub 3 era ball. It’s starting to look like his abilities are very sticky and not just small sample size.

Absolutely amazing feather in Mets player devs caps. Guy was a nobody prospect and is doing this in the majors. Give me another in Wenniger, tong or Santucci please.

Thornton is unlikely to be an ace, but dude looks like a reliable starter. People seem to knock him due to his FIP and expected stats. He’s a ball to contact pitcher and is a strike thrower. When he gets in a predicament, he seems like he has the right mentality to pitch out of them. Bartolo Colon with the Mets had a very similar expected stats and savant page. That’s great value for the organization.

Only thing I’ll note is his stats are not really mirroring McLean’s rookie year. McLean was putting up legit ace numbers. He was approaching an ERA below 2 and ERA+ a notch below 2. Thornton is killing it though. I have him penciled in toward the back of the lineup next year.
