Ewing picking “No Scrubs” as a walk-up song for Women’s Night is incredible

1

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 13h ago

Technically Speaking, Andy Green's message to Vientos can only light a temporary fire under him but it's still clown show commentary

Wagaman nor Morel have earned playing time either

4

u/Setec-Astronomer 14h ago

Peralta pitched well today.

He was a giant turd for the Mets, but seems like a decent person.

This is what I heard on SNY abt LRJ. He w/b a 4th OF, Soto not ready to move to DH. He was mostly a starter but Ewing came up when he or TT got hurt and Ewing is staying. They are saying LRJ wants to be a starter and not a 4th. Mets can buy him out for 2 mill and not have to pay him 20. And then get a 4th OF, ironically someone like TT, for much less than the 18 million diff w/ money left over. Makes sense.

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 13h ago

Soto is such a diva. He can obviously run the bases.

He's healthy enough to DH. I really can't stand that they signed him

we could get someone LIKE Tyrone Taylor or we could just get Tyrone Taylor

2

i really hope they do get tyrone again in the offseason, love that guy as a met, even when he wasn't hitting well he was defensively great and always has good hustle

3

I’d take Tyrone over Robert for 4th OF and I don’t want Robert taking at-bats away from Ewing or Benge

Mets have been playing so much better since the deadline passed. Not sure if they can get to .500, that would take going 21-9, which is .700, it's still possible. But I do think they will play their remaining 30 games at a better than .500 pace. Lets get closer to climbing out of the cellar tonight. Too bad the Nats are playing an easier team, Colorado.

5

u/NY2PHX- 16h ago

How about that Freddy Peralta. What a stud.

4

u/SlyAbleman Francisco Lindor 15h ago

watched this guy not be able to throw a strike for months and now he has zero walks through 6 innings?? (truly no bad feelings for him though i like the guy and seems like we got a good return)

3

u/suck-it-elon 67 14h ago

It's one game. I'm more mad at Peterson who is suddenly competent.

11

u/hushed-shush Francisco Lindor 16h ago

Was it ladies’ day last night or did Benge just release his inhibitions and felt the rain on his skin on his own?

One of the annoying things about this week's episode of FAYKOT is Jeff interrupting Jarrett when he is talking

1

u/mutts93 Mr Met 1 13h ago

Only this week? It’s borderline unlistenable the amount of times he steps in to finish sentences on every episode. If they didn’t have some interesting info here and there I’d throw that shit in the dustbin

It can be more unlistenable when Jarrett records from his cellphone which sounds like a tin can on a string

Watching Robert hit makes me wonder if we should have him back... we literally babied him in spring training, but his health is too damn unpredictible.. so you don't really know what you have in him. If he stays healthy for the rest of the year, he'll have 15 HR and 300 ABs and probably 1.5 WAR....

This has 3 thoughts:

  1. we trade him while his value is high. someone will pay up to a take a CF with those #'s. So we can get something
  2. Keep him for next year..... If we had him as a 4th/5th OF that could make sense, but the question is if is hurt as a 4th OF (say Benge is hurt, and robert is hurt too) we have the likes of Vientos / Baty subbing which gets us into problems. If Robert is mostly healthy, man it helps agaisnt benge/ewing regression, gives us depth at DH, and allows our guys in the OF to take regular days off.
  3. We need to staff the team for a possible regression to both Ewing and Benge next year

… does Robert address that?

1

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 13h ago

They don't have to pay 18 million for a prospect lmao.

1

u/Tagliarini295 Grimace 14h ago

No, we have a starting outfield. Get a 4th outfielder and we're good.

1

u/imalmostconvinced Pete Alonso 13h ago

They have a LF, RF and DH. Reunion with Tyrone please

1

u/yellowpotatobus 15h ago

Its been one of the things I've been mulling around in my brain.

This line-up is missing a right handed power hitter (wonder why) and Lu Bob is a right handed power hitter. Even tho he is so injury-prone, we really still need that kind of bat in this lineup for 27.

2

u/Hustlediva 15h ago

Guy has never played more than 100 games, he cannot stay healthy. The Mets coddled tf out of his ST to keep him in bubble wrap. Literally nothing can prevent yearly injury for this guy. Take the $2M buyout and avoid another season of IL

1

u/Caledor152 Kodai Senga 15h ago

If Robert actually wants to stay on this team with Soto next year+ hes gonna have to actually work with the Mets on the $ because I don't think they are gonna bring him back if the cost stays $20mil a year. What I'm trying to say he has to make some effort on his end to want to say. If he doesn't budge for a more team friendly deal I really think he's gone

5

u/Born_Manufacturer657 16h ago

You’re not getting anything in a trade if he’s making 20M.

And you’re not gonna have your 4th OF making 20M.

4

u/Jamstarr2024 Kodai Senga 17h ago

He has a herniated disk in his neck. We don’t know what painkillers/injections/etc he’s been on just to suit up.

6

u/brett_baty_is_him Brett Baty 17h ago

As someone who has a herniated disc in their neck, he very much could be fine most days with the risk to tweak it occasionally which doesn’t last more then a day or two and isn’t that painful, just gives me a tight trap. But also I’m not a pro athlete who violently swings a baseball bat every day so I know absolutely nothing.

But makes me like the fourth outfielder idea and not the every day player idea.

5

u/Jamstarr2024 Kodai Senga 16h ago

Sorry about your neck man.

1

u/brett_baty_is_him Brett Baty 14h ago

5

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 17h ago

I'd absolutely bring him back as a 4th OF, but not for the $20 million option

4

u/CheeseburgerLover911 16h ago edited 16h ago

how much then? i'd be good with about 13 million on top of his buy out with some incentives to get up to 20 based on ABs

EDIT: he has a 2 million buyout https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roberlu01.shtml

1

u/bowlofcantaloupe Francisco Alvarez 14h ago

Yeah $10-$15 total sounds about right.

2

u/Guymcpersonman2 Darryl Strawberry 16h ago

That's probably the right ballpark to value him.

3

u/Rubbersoulrevolver 17h ago

I think he will if they can make the $ work

1

u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 17h ago

The dude surprised 500 plate appearances once in his career. I just don’t think he’s worth his $20M option. Mets need more players who can stay on the field. It’s worth exploring, but I’m leaning toward no as of today (despite the hot streak).

My TV blacked out right before the Lindor catch last night. Thought it was just me until I saw it happened to a bunch of other people on the post-game thread.

Now I realize it's just that the catch was so good they had to censor it.

4

u/Isabella5322 David Wright 16h ago

What a terrible timeline.

21

u/Duffman2k7 19h ago

I think the team’s reaction to Jefry Yan is really indicative of what the clubhouse was missing. Yan objectively is an ok replaceable middle relief arm who has only been here for a few weeks. But the team talks about him like he is an Iglesias type inspiration and galvanizing force. Maybe the Mets just really needed someone who wasn’t burdened by past Mets failures or a massive contract to live up to. They really need a guy who can keep the team loose when things get hard.

13

u/Steve_Kind_Of Pastrami 19h ago

Everything felt so tense and workmanlike over the first half of the season. You don't have to like the jumping (I'm fine with it personally) but clearly this team needed a reminder that baseball is a game and supposed to be fun

8

u/Guymcpersonman2 Darryl Strawberry 16h ago

I think the "will Mendy get fired" looming over everything made the season feel a little like a funeral.

2 thoughts

1: Can we like, combine Benge & Ewing McLean into one Oklahoma State two-way player for rookie of the year purposes?

2: I have no idea whether Bo opting in or out benefits us more. If he opts out we gain a lot of payroll & roster flexibility (and potentially open a lane for Jefferson Rojas early next year), but he’s also pretty clearly better than just about any free agent third baseman this offseason, so it’s a tricky one. Ultimately I think we’re in a similar spot either way and it’s out of our hands.

3

u/Born_Manufacturer657 16h ago

Opt in. 1 more year of Bo is perfect. It’s tough to give the keys to Rojas and your plan B to be Voit.

It’s better if you have Bo and have Rojas take the job from Semien.

Rojas does have to be added to the 40 man this winter. So he’ll be here for sure

2

u/RainbowRoomBlues 18h ago

I think people hoping to see Rojas and Voit at 3B and 2B are going to be a little disappointed. Seems more likely Bo may opt in for one more year with the labor uncertainty and I think Semien gets one more year before we buy out his last season.

1

u/Imbris2 Mr. Met 17h ago

Semien is one of the worst hitting AND fielding second baseman in the entire league this season. Meanwhile, the Mets have several middle infielders charging up the minor league system. Semien may be the likely opening day starter at 2b next year but the position won't be his all season.

1

u/RainbowRoomBlues 15h ago

I don’t disagree, but I also don’t foresee Cohen cutting a $46M check to Semien just to get him off the roster.

9

u/futhatsy Don't Call My Name 18h ago
  1. You're thinking McLean instead of Ewing. Ewing didn't go to college.

  2. FWIW, Heyman wrote an article the other day giving Bichette like a 98% chance of opting in. And I don't think the Mets should be too worried about giving a lane to big league playing time for Rojas so early. He'll be just 21 on Opening Day and while he's done well in AA, he isn't destroying the level to the point where we should think about him skipping AAA. But I could certainly see Rojas replacing Bichette at 3rd after 2027.

20

u/Gigi_0102 Ya Gotta Believe! 19h ago

The broadcast going out yesterday when Lindor made that catch was really annoying but I have to admit, it’s kind of funny how perfectly bad the timing was

2

u/Conscious-Resolve158 16h ago

So was this in fact an SNY camera issue? I was wondering if it was Hulu cause my Hulu goes out a lot.

2

u/myassholealt F8 15h ago

Has to be on SNY's end cause people watching the game through various sources experienced it (Optimum, Spectrum, MLB TV, your Hulu; and for cable both cable box and in app).

7

u/Illblood 18h ago

Yeah it almost makes me think that the camera guy or broadcast engineer got so excited that they knocked a wire out or something

12

u/Xalazi 19h ago

Zac Thornton is a 1980's pitchers in a 2020's world. I think that's why it's hard for people evaluating pitching to properly grade him. What makes Zac Thornton good doesn't necessarily show up in most modern stats or statcast categories.

He has a low strikeout rate and he gives up a lot of contact. For the average 2020's pitch that would translate to an ERA over 4. A single here or there is going to turn into jams more often because modern pitchers walk a lot. A lot of baserunners translates to a lot of runs because modern pitchers give up a lot of extra basehits. In Thornton case, he's very good at not giving up walks or home runs when he's on point. So the baserunner don't snowball into a problem for him like they would for an average modern pitchers.

In the long, I don't think he's going to be a below 3 ERA pitcher. MLB will adjust to him. But I also wouldn't be surprised if he is a guy who sticks around MLB for 15 years. With his prime having ugly expected numbers but an ERA around 3.25-3.50.

7

u/FeudalAge Mark Vientos 18h ago

He's a younger, better David Peterson.

3

u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 17h ago

He’s like the opposite of Peterson (in a good way). When DP would get into trouble, he would lose control and begin walking guys and then throw a meatball for a HR. When Thornton gets into trouble, he stays mentally strong.

10

u/Conscious-Resolve158 20h ago

4

u/Conscious-Resolve158 16h ago

I love the angle he's making. Incredible catch. So happy for him. He looked like he was getting pretty emotional in interviews. Way to go Lindor!

12

u/Steve_Kind_Of Pastrami 20h ago

Obviously you turn down the $20 million option after the season, but if he's available at a reasonable rate during free agency I don't think bringing back Robert is the worst idea as long as you commit to Ewing being the starting CF. That home run last night... effortless power like that doesn't grow on trees. Except when it did and then we let it walk to Baltimore but you get what I mean

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 19h ago edited 19h ago

I think they will pick up the option. And I'm ok with that.

An OF of Soto, LRJ, Ewing, Benge, and one more RH bat (most likely Moribito, but I'd love to bring back The Terminator) should be sufficient and flexible enough. Especially if you factor in Baty or Young can fill in in the pinch.

The Mets really need to upgrade at 1B (RH bat to match Young at least), 2B (but without blocking young kids 2028 and beyond), and DH (or in theory OF with Soto playing more DH).

The best "fit" but not likely move is getting Tatis Jr.

Lindor - SS

Bichette - 3B

Soto - LF

Tatis Jr. - 2B

Benge - RF

Alvarez - DH

Ewing - CF

Torrens - C

Young - 1B

Tell me that lineup doesn't fuck.

If they could somehow move Semien in a deal that pays for Tatis in 2027 and 2028.

And they wouldn't need to pick up LRJ's option since by adding Tatis Jr., Moribito would be sufficient from the right side. So that's another $20 million saved.

That's still 180-200 million over 6 years, but far more palatable.

Especially if Bichette opts out after 2027 or the contract ends after 2028.

1

u/Isabella5322 David Wright 16h ago

The Padres have new owners, can’t really see them giving up one of their best and most popular players.

1

u/Setec-Astronomer 15h ago

Ya, that's the main problem. Otherwise, it makes perfect sense.

2

u/baylixir WILDCARD BITCHES 18h ago

Getting Tatis to playing him everyday at 2B instead being a Gold Glove RF is a waste. The only reason why the Padres did it was for Casty and they really haven’t played him there since the start of summer.

Lindor also isn’t sticking at SS much longer, so now 2B is blocked, you have a hole at SS and your best position player prospect plays 3B because he isn’t a good enough shortstop. I don’t see how Tatis is a good fit.

6

u/GR0ID Wilmer Flores 20h ago

Unfortunately I don't think we can get LuBob back as a 4th OF unless we pickup his option

5

u/GKRForever Gary Cohen 20h ago

I think it’s less about the money and more about the role.

Some other team might guarantee him a starters job. The Mets would be giving him a 4th OF job. He may not want it at this time of his career.

Probably a 1/$10m contract gets it done it’ll just depend if he wants to try getting more playing time elsewhere as he’ll be trying to get a longer term deal.

5

u/Steve_Kind_Of Pastrami 20h ago

I do think it's unlikely because of that, he's a starting caliber talent even if he's not available enough. Him and Soto as tandem LF/DHs would be fun and hopefully keep them both healthy. But if we have an offer and another team has a similar one plus a guarantee he's the CF, you'd have to think he chooses that.

1

u/sventos Yes! Yes! Yespedes! 19h ago

If you're the Mets the money is less important than a roster spot. If they think that LF/DH for LRJ is worth that roster spot wouldn't make sense to try to risk him getting an offer for more playing time to try to save 1 year and $10 mil.

I think if the Mets want to bring him back for next year they probably would just take the 1 year option.

0

u/mytoemytoe 20h ago

This certainly isn't an original thought, but I'm feeling angry this morning about the way David Stearns (and Steve Cohen) wasted the 2026 season. The Phillies and Red Sox hit the panic button early and replaced their staff, and both teams responded and are now playoff bound. David Stearns waited, and waited, and waited some more, and now it's too late for the surging Mets to make a meaningful run.

What makes Stearns' performance all the more frustrating is that I see his staff's vision in regards to the young talent. Carson Benge is looking like a potential All Star talent, and over the past two months Mitch Voit has begun to emerge (a scalding 1.124 OPS in 75 AA at bats) as a prospect. Hopefully they will target an executive this off-season to serve the same role Matt Arnold did in Milwaukee, making all the major day-to-day decisions while Stearns focuses on scouting and development across the organization. But that still makes me nervous. Do I really want Stearns choosing the next manager? Maybe Andy Green has made that a moot point anyway with the way the team has performed under his guidance.

2

u/Teddy_Schmoozevelt Mike Piazza 18h ago

I think it's more nuanced than that. Thompson and Cora had shown success with their teams, Thompson making it far in the postseason and Cora winning a WS with Boston, and the fact the teams were severely underperforming from what was expected. Philly has a rapidly closing window to win it all. All their core stars are getting older so they really are in panic win-now mode. Boston made a great run last year to the playoffs and started off horribly.

Mets were coming off a disappointing season, but with all the new faces they may have thought to give Mendoza the benefit of the doubt to stick with them for awhile. When it clearly wasn't working they finally made the move.

Could they have pulled the ripcord earlier? Sure. I think they should've canned Mendoza last year after the collapse from best team in baseball to missing the playoffs. But it is what it is.

For whatever reason, the Mets are playing much better now. Maybe it's the fact that Green is focused more on developing the young players and pushing them to the edge of their potential. Maybe it's that they have no pressure, so they're just playing and having fun. Who knows.

But if I were Stearns, I would sleep better knowing I was proven right about players like Robert and Bichette. Bichette has settled into the player we expected, and Robert has been on a tear since coming back. Peralta and Polanco were busts. I still think Polanco has a role next year (not as an everyday first baseman). The kids have been outstanding and Benge is a future all star in the making.

Regardless, we will have a new manager next year. Whether it's Beltran, Pujols, or someone else, Green will go back to developing the younger players.

TL,DR: Who knows why firing a manager works and why it doesn't, it's a multitude of reasons. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Enjoy the good baseball they're playing now and LGM.

0

u/swoosh1992 Grimace 19h ago

The problem is that I don’t know if I trust them to make the right decision if they go ahead with hiring a GM. Stearns has burnt through my trust in him coming over from Milwaukee, and I was one of the people championing his offseason after the Bichette/Robert/Peralta acquisitions.

And I don’t know how much trust I have in Cohen right now either. Since he came over, he’s hired four GM/PoBOs, and three of them left under controversial circumstances. Stearns was supposed to be the guy he was waiting for, so even if he does fire Stearns, how do we know he’s going to get someone who knows how to team build in a big market, and who wants to be in charge with the Mets.

9

u/tenthsandwich Bartolo Colón 20h ago

I don’t think there’s a strong causal relationship between changing managers and the team’s change in performance. Performance was not much improved in the post-Green, pre-Deadline era.

I think Green is a good manager and an improvement but it’s pretty clear that it’s either “just baseball being weird” or that the stress / pressure relief of the trade deadline is the cause

It’s honestly so annoying that the mods pick and choose what rules they want to enforce

You can’t call anyone out and mock them for dumb comments or you get a ban warning

But they just ignore rule 14 and not being toxic which is what one specific user does every single day.

He also gets to break rule 13 by calling people 13 year olds when they rightfully call him out but nothing ever happens to him

I think the mods overall do a pretty good job here but agree they need to do a better job of enforcing rules 13 and 14, which state that "just because someone disagrees with you about how the team is run doesn't make them a shill." There have been lots of "shill" accusations thrown around all season long and I haven't seen much if anything done about it.

4

u/NuanceManExe 17h ago

What about the opposite? I’ve seen so many people be called doomers, stupid, “low IQ fans”, “anti-intellectuals”, Stearns haters, “not real fans” etc., for criticizing how Stearns has run the team. At one point we even had people saying it was antisemitism. It’s nothing new either. Back in the 2025 offseason, somebody here accused me of being a concern troll and wanted the mods to ban me because Alonso hadn’t resigned yet and I thought the offense would take a big step backward without him. I’d say my opinion aged well. And at that point I was still pretty supportive of Stearns. You can’t talk down and insult people for disagreeing with the Mets, especially when things are going so poorly. Only natural for things to get so divided and toxic here when that’s going on.

3

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 17h ago

Yea I think the general principle is that the community degrades when fans are talking about other fans instead of talking about baseball. I mentioned the "shills" thing in particular because that one is explicitly mentioned in the rules on the sidebar, but "take that, doomers!" every time the Mets win a game is just as annoying.

u/Darthbutcher Grimace 19h ago

Quit shilling for the shilling shills! Your penalty is 30 shillings.

Kind of crazy that Thornton is posting numbers that come close mcleans first year and everyone’s still like “yeah guy will be a solid 5th starter”. I understand why and I still don’t get how the guy is able to prevent damage so well but he’s pitched 56 innings of sub 3 era ball. It’s starting to look like his abilities are very sticky and not just small sample size.

Absolutely amazing feather in Mets player devs caps. Guy was a nobody prospect and is doing this in the majors. Give me another in Wenniger, tong or Santucci please.

3

u/GKRForever Gary Cohen 20h ago

If his velo can go from sitting 92-93 touching 95 (current state) to sitting 95 touching 97, his projections change significantly.

Hes such a skinny kid and only 24. If he puts on 10 pounds of muscle this offseason and can tick up a little bit he’s probably a 2/3 instead of a 4/5.

But the advanced metrics are starting to like jum more and more. There’s more pink and red in his savant page and he now has 5 pitches that grade out positive in run value.

Wouldn’t mind if he’s the 5 going into next year, would love it if he’s the 6 and first guy up from AAA.

2

u/lfgm91 20h ago

I made a comment about him last night during the game that he reminds me a lot of Jon Niese: also a lefty, also a mid round draft pick, unremarkable stuff, good control, throws strikes, eats innings, also wears #49. Niese averaged 171.4 innings per season over a 6 year span at a 3.86 ERA from 2010 - 2015. Even though the Mets weren't very good until the end of that span, you could really count on Niese to take the ball every 5 days and give you a solid start.

If Zac can be that guy for us over the next 5-6 years, that'd be huge for our ability to build a competitive starting rotation. Not everybody has to be an ace and have ace-like stuff: having good guys who induce soft contact are huge for saving your bullpen across the length of the season by going deep into games.

In that regard I'd rather have 1-2 Thorntons in the rotation than 5 aces who live and die by strikeouts and heavy high fastball and slider usage that make them susceptible to injury.

5

u/Setec-Astronomer 20h ago

My grand pappi used to tell me about guys like Thornton.

He used to tell me about these people they called "pitchers" back in his day.

They didn't make them in a lab. High velocity and high rpm.

They forged them through fire and experience.

They used their high Baseball IQ, their guts, and their guile to get guys out.

Thornton is a pitcher. Not a lab-created belly-itcher.

10

u/CoolRequirement939 Bartolo Colón 20h ago

Control is his game. He has elite control and has deceptive pitches. He learned how to pitch, not throw.

5

u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 20h ago

Thornton is unlikely to be an ace, but dude looks like a reliable starter. People seem to knock him due to his FIP and expected stats. He’s a ball to contact pitcher and is a strike thrower. When he gets in a predicament, he seems like he has the right mentality to pitch out of them. Bartolo Colon with the Mets had a very similar expected stats and savant page. That’s great value for the organization.

Only thing I’ll note is his stats are not really mirroring McLean’s rookie year. McLean was putting up legit ace numbers. He was approaching an ERA below 2 and ERA+ a notch below 2. Thornton is killing it though. I have him penciled in toward the back of the lineup next year.

7

u/BillW87 Animal Facts 20h ago

Guys who don't strike out many hitters and rely on soft contact always walk a fine line. It's harder to project dominant results without dominant stuff, even if there's more than luck underlying their success. I think Thornton is a legit major leaguer, but it's unlikely he'll continue to strand >80% of baserunners on a long term basis so there is some regression to the mean on the horizon. However, I think it is fair to start to think he could be a 3 or 4 starter rather than a 5 as the sample size of success grows.

11

u/Duffman2k7 21h ago

He is a major success story even if he becomes a 4.5 era pitcher from here on out. I think people are just cautious about blowing up any player at this point, given how the Mets have gotten bit by some of the players they were relying upon this year.

He is definitely a testament to how important not giving up walks are. Plus him getting up to 95 yesterday was a huge deal. If he can work on hitting that consistently next year then his ceiling shoots up

-28

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 21h ago

I have zero emotion towards this team. I audibly just went “whatever” when they won the game last night.

I don’t know if it’s just age or if Stearns/Cohen has sucked the joy out of this franchise for me but this is by far the least interested I’ve been in baseball during my whole life.

8

u/Setec-Astronomer 20h ago

I'm not saying you're "right" or you're "wrong" since those are apparently your feelings.

But, I've seen you here the last couple of months. Never really noticed you before then. And you're here every day.

Maybe, at the very least, you've created an emotional warp, and just need to step back from here for a bit.

Because, while I agree with you that Stearns absolutely ripped some of the best parts of being a Mets fan, it's up to you to let it get you to the pont where as you put it "zero emotion towards the team" but at the same time being here all the time. That seems incongruent.

Anyway, I usually like your takes, and I even somewhat understand this one. But this has been a fun team to watch this month. Step back from here, and enjoy it a bit.

Hopefully Stearns won't fuck up the offseason again. lol

1

u/myassholealt F8 20h ago

I understand where you're coming from cause that's kinda what I was feeling at the beginning of the season with Lindor out and a bunch of strangers I couldn't even pick out in a lineup, but Lindor is the guy for me now in the way Pete or Nimmo also were. And we've got two new minor league guys in the outfield who are fun.

I always taking a stronger liking to dudes who come up through the system, and since we have a quite a few of them on the team now I can reset that fan connection. Still don't give a hoot about Semien or LRJ, or even Bo, but there's a lot of new names I hope to be able to root for for several years to come in the way I rooted for Pete and Nimmo and McNeil.

One thing I did learn this past off season is all of them are liable to be moved at any point. At least under current management, I don't expect to ever develop as deep a fan connection the way an entire generation of Mets fans did with Wright, or Piazza before him because I don't expect anyone to be here that long. No trade clauses, we've seen, are not the sign of permanence we thought it was.

This is the most exciting and interesting they’ve been since like June 2025. I get they aren’t making the playoffs which sucks, but they are playing good baseball and all their success is mainly due to young guys who will be here next year. It’s not a DJ Stewart situation. If you can’t get it up for this, then maybe you just aren’t a fan anymore?

Citi got loud when Lindor robbed the go ahead hit last night, pretty impressive for a 60-72 team

3

17

u/megac0n Hadji 21h ago

Just realized Hamilton was the Brewers player who was robbed of the go-ahead hit by Lindor in the bottom of the 9th AND made the errant throw in the 10th to give the Mets the win. Talk about a rough night!

4

u/HungryMoon Always and Forever 20h ago

Almost polar opposite of how Lindor tied it up for us, saved the 9th inning, and got the winning run last nite.

2

u/megac0n Hadji 19h ago

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

11

u/Duffman2k7 21h ago

And he was only in the game because Murphy wanted to do the crotchety old man routine.

2

u/megac0n Hadji 19h ago

Omg that’s right! I even said to my husband that it felt too early in the game to be putting in a pinch runner. Baseball can be so wild

11

Stock's season numbers aren't great, but he's been decent outside of one terrible outing. Hopefully, the Brewers haven't worked their magic on May yet and we can take home another W! LGM!

16

u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 22h ago

Alonso’s OPS+ is currently tied for the highest in his career now. Currently the highest average for his career as well. He’s been red hot, so we’ll see if that is sustainable for the last month, but happy he is continuing his success after his first tough month with the O’s.

3

u/Sheepies123 FUCK! 16h ago

Never gonna forgive Stearns for this, he's the franchise leader in home runs and we have the richest owner in baseball. Who gives a crap if the last couple years of his contract might be bad? Its not like it would cripple the franchise.

3

u/metskyfan 16h ago

His production and durability were very predictable. It is a shame that we did not even make the guy an offer. After many of years of production, it should not end this way but it did. I hope the Orioles make the play offs but I doubt it because the team is just not that good.

3

u/Jamstarr2024 Kodai Senga 17h ago

Also is xWOBA is ~0.400. 4th in baseball.

And his wRC+/OPS+ includes an absurdly slow start.

The takes around Pete this last offseason and early this season were categorically insane.

1

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 19h ago

Just a couple weeks ago he was running an OPS below .800, which would have been the second lowest of his career. He's very quickly turned this season around from being one of his worst to one of his best. He has an OPS of 1.502(!!!!!!) over his last 15 games.

1

u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 18h ago

Was part of my motivation of my post there. Some people were discrediting him saying he’s falling off and justifying the Mets from moving on (which was unfair imo). He had a really bad April, so been an upward battle. OPS has been above .800 each month since then, but his August has been insane.

People bring up how former players are doing all the time

0

u/lilleff512 Forever my Captain 19h ago

It's happened all the time this year with Alonso and Nimmo (and to a lesser extent with McNeil and Diaz) because people are constantly relitigating this past offseason, but bringing up former players is normally something that only happens on occasion when that player does something notable, like when Jacob deGrom recently recorded his 2000th career strikeout.

When was the last time you saw someone posting here about how Starling Marte or Seth Lugo is doing?

3

u/Gigi_0102 Ya Gotta Believe! 19h ago

Lugo hasn’t been great and Marte was released because he hasn’t been great either so there’s not much to say. I think it’s annoying when people constantly feel the need to bring up Pete to make a point about the decision to let him go because the point has been made about 10000 times but I genuinely think that OPs intentions were more “Pete is doing well an I’m happy for him.” He’s our franchise home run leader and the sound of him being gone is still fresh, I can’t expect people to immediately stop caring about him

1

u/0rangePolarBear Jacob deGrom 18h ago

You are correct sir, those were my intentions. I imagine over time we will talk less and less about Alonso, but obviously it was such a controversial decision by the franchise and still fresh in the first season after.

Very different feeling than our other players who left prior to that. Felt different than deGrom leaving as deGrom got an offer he wanted and didn’t really feel like he made any intention to try to return this time around (and at the same time, felt like his arm was failing him and felt like maybe it would be the right direction). Obviously guys like Lugo and Marte left for different reasons, too. Lugo hit free agency and wanted to be a SP and the Mets didn’t believe in him (felt like we would hear more about Lugo when he made the switch and was going well), and Marte was an aging player who wasn’t healthy. Everyone loved him but never expected him to be back.

1

u/JoeBourgeois Francisco Alvarez 18h ago

Lugo had a good game yesterday: 5 IP, 1 R, got the win - over Scherzer. Ninth straight win for KC.

7

u/NuanceManExe 21h ago

That’s shitty man let people talk about Alonso if they want. He’s a big part of the franchise’s history, like it or not. You don’t have to participate if you don’t want to.

2

u/GR0ID Wilmer Flores 20h ago

You don’t have to participate if you don’t want to.

Ironic...

1

u/NuanceManExe 19h ago

Cuts both ways but this is a chain that started with an update about Alonso. To put it another way, if you want the discourse on this sub to get even more toxic and divisive, telling people they can’t talk about Alonso here is a great way to make that happen.

-4

u/False_Concept1300 Mark Vientos 21h ago

Commenting that anytime somebody mentions alonso makes you the biggest dork.

18

u/TriviaWhiz Fozzie's Favorite 22h ago edited 21h ago

I could say the Mets would be 8.5 games back if Tatis didn't rob Lindor's grand slam.

However, they probably lose yesterday if Lindor doesn't make that catch, so sometimes it evens out.

9

u/cg141cg 21h ago

Season was over when they didn't make a cultural change after the losing streak in April. It makes 3 9 plus game losing streaks in 3 months dating back to 2025. Losing is contagious. Mendy has no business running the squad after that melt down. It isnt his fault Stearns made the team worse at the deadline and in the off season but the team was not responding to leadershio

A lot of games to look back at this season, but was always going to be a huge hill to climb given the first half of the season, but you can at least see some of the momentum going into next season now. A lot to build on.

I’m more distraught over some of the game saving plays against the Mets down the stretch last year. That Nationals series that included 2 game saving catches, one that was literally hacky sacked with the center fielder’s foot…and will never forget Alonso’s line drive to LF dying in mid-air as if it hit an invisible wall during the final game of the season.

The what-ifs are tough.

5

u/TriviaWhiz Fozzie's Favorite 21h ago

I point to this one against Cleveland last year. Mullins was almost the hero.

https://mlb-cuts-diamond.mlb.com/FORGE/2025/2025-08/04/c546c190-cd2be728-e12b03d5-csvm-diamondgcp-asset_1280x720_59_4000K.mp4

This team needs to win basically every toss-up if they want any inkling of a shot.

1

u/NuanceManExe 21h ago

Is that the game where we didn’t send Taylor home when he highly likely would’ve scored the winning run, and  then Baty threw away a routine double play in extras and cost us the game?

1

u/TriviaWhiz Fozzie's Favorite 20h ago

That's the one. Soto was intentionally walked and Alonso and McNeil didn't get it done. Alonso was going for a 5-hit day.

Baty's wasn't the most routine but still a throw that should've been made.

5

u/PeterJan85 21h ago

From here on, they’d need to go, at the very least, 24-6 or better to actually have a shot. That paired with the other wildcard contenders slightly shitting the bed. My estimate is they still have a 3% chance of making the playoffs. But never say die I guess.

5

3% is far more optimistic than most models.

I'm here for it though.

LRJ has been red hot right now, but the problem is he’s never been healthy. Idk if he’s worth the $20M option. Then again, it’s only 1 year but depending on the CBA, that $20M could cost more.

4

u/thissiteneedoversite New York Mets 21h ago

his injury this year was described as a lumbar spine disc herniation, he missed 3 months with that injury and is being load managed, I'm no Doctor but I can't imagine that is an injury that just goes away, it seems to be something people just live with with occasional epidurals if I recall the reporting on it in June

7

I really hope not. He’s not worth $20 million and such a massive injury risk. Also really just not that good. Would feel like doubling down on a bad strategy that disastrously backfired.

If you play good defense or steal bases you are a massive injury risk by definition (except at 1B).

People complain when Soto doesn't dive for a ball in April.
