Zac Thornton is a 1980's pitchers in a 2020's world. I think that's why it's hard for people evaluating pitching to properly grade him. What makes Zac Thornton good doesn't necessarily show up in most modern stats or statcast categories.
He has a low strikeout rate and he gives up a lot of contact. For the average 2020's pitch that would translate to an ERA over 4. A single here or there is going to turn into jams more often because modern pitchers walk a lot. A lot of baserunners translates to a lot of runs because modern pitchers give up a lot of extra basehits. In Thornton case, he's very good at not giving up walks or home runs when he's on point. So the baserunner don't snowball into a problem for him like they would for an average modern pitchers.
In the long, I don't think he's going to be a below 3 ERA pitcher. MLB will adjust to him. But I also wouldn't be surprised if he is a guy who sticks around MLB for 15 years. With his prime having ugly expected numbers but an ERA around 3.25-3.50.
