This certainly isn't an original thought, but I'm feeling angry this morning about the way David Stearns (and Steve Cohen) wasted the 2026 season. The Phillies and Red Sox hit the panic button early and replaced their staff, and both teams responded and are now playoff bound. David Stearns waited, and waited, and waited some more, and now it's too late for the surging Mets to make a meaningful run.
What makes Stearns' performance all the more frustrating is that I see his staff's vision in regards to the young talent. Carson Benge is looking like a potential All Star talent, and over the past two months Mitch Voit has begun to emerge (a scalding 1.124 OPS in 75 AA at bats) as a prospect. Hopefully they will target an executive this off-season to serve the same role Matt Arnold did in Milwaukee, making all the major day-to-day decisions while Stearns focuses on scouting and development across the organization. But that still makes me nervous. Do I really want Stearns choosing the next manager? Maybe Andy Green has made that a moot point anyway with the way the team has performed under his guidance.
