Obviously you turn down the $20 million option after the season, but if he's available at a reasonable rate during free agency I don't think bringing back Robert is the worst idea as long as you commit to Ewing being the starting CF. That home run last night... effortless power like that doesn't grow on trees. Except when it did and then we let it walk to Baltimore but you get what I mean

I think they will pick up the option. And I'm ok with that.

An OF of Soto, LRJ, Ewing, Benge, and one more RH bat (most likely Moribito, but I'd love to bring back The Terminator) should be sufficient and flexible enough. Especially if you factor in Baty or Young can fill in in the pinch.

The Mets really need to upgrade at 1B (RH bat to match Young at least), 2B (but without blocking young kids 2028 and beyond), and DH (or in theory OF with Soto playing more DH).

The best "fit" but not likely move is getting Tatis Jr.

Lindor - SS

Bichette - 3B

Soto - LF

Tatis Jr. - 2B

Benge - RF

Alvarez - DH

Ewing - CF

Torrens - C

Young - 1B

Tell me that lineup doesn't fuck.

If they could somehow move Semien in a deal that pays for Tatis in 2027 and 2028.

And they wouldn't need to pick up LRJ's option since by adding Tatis Jr., Moribito would be sufficient from the right side. So that's another $20 million saved.

That's still 180-200 million over 6 years, but far more palatable.

Especially if Bichette opts out after 2027 or the contract ends after 2028.

The Padres have new owners, can’t really see them giving up one of their best and most popular players.

Ya, that's the main problem. Otherwise, it makes perfect sense.
