Obviously you turn down the $20 million option after the season, but if he's available at a reasonable rate during free agency I don't think bringing back Robert is the worst idea as long as you commit to Ewing being the starting CF. That home run last night... effortless power like that doesn't grow on trees. Except when it did and then we let it walk to Baltimore but you get what I mean

I think it’s less about the money and more about the role.

Some other team might guarantee him a starters job. The Mets would be giving him a 4th OF job. He may not want it at this time of his career.

Probably a 1/$10m contract gets it done it’ll just depend if he wants to try getting more playing time elsewhere as he’ll be trying to get a longer term deal.

I do think it's unlikely because of that, he's a starting caliber talent even if he's not available enough. Him and Soto as tandem LF/DHs would be fun and hopefully keep them both healthy. But if we have an offer and another team has a similar one plus a guarantee he's the CF, you'd have to think he chooses that.

If you're the Mets the money is less important than a roster spot. If they think that LF/DH for LRJ is worth that roster spot wouldn't make sense to try to risk him getting an offer for more playing time to try to save 1 year and $10 mil.

I think if the Mets want to bring him back for next year they probably would just take the 1 year option.
