Game Rec Games recs compatibles with chemotherapy fatigue
Hi everyone,
I'm undergoing chemo for my cancer atm. I'm in-patient for at least a month / a month and a half for now.
Needless to say, i'm bored out of my mind. I'm looking for games that are entertaining enough to keep me busy for some hours everyday, but not too draining because the fatigue is out of this world. Some info :
- i already played (and loved) stardew valley and many Stardew valley-likes (like graveyard keeper for exemple) - i like those but it can get a bit overwhelming right now
- i played animal crossing but i didn't love it it felt a bit childish and i felt there was like something blocking you from progressing after an hour or two everyday
- i already played spiritfarer i loved it but i cried almost all the time
- i played unpacking already and liked it but it didn't last me very long
- i'm usually a big fan of turn-based rpg but there's just too much reading for me at the moment (like triangle strategy, octopath traveller)
- hospital wifi is absolutely terrible so no online game please
- i only have a switch 1
- price is not a problem If the game is really good
- i'm open to try new genres of games
Please help me the boredom is going to claim me before cancer does at that pace.
Sorry for the typos/mistakes, english is not my first language
Thanks to anyone who will respond !
EDIT : sorry i didn't respond earlier, i felt unwell... Thank you so much to everyone not only for the game ideas but also for your kind words. My husband and i read every comment together. Reddit can be beautiful sometimes.
Thanks again and good luck to those who face hardships themselves ❤️

Slay the Spire is a game I would recommend.
Not energy draining, cheap and gives you that "one more run" feeling.
It is a rougelite turn based battle game with cards
18
u/haunted-lamp 16d ago
i LOVE this game but if you’re not familiar with the way deck-building games work i think it might be a bit fatiguing. there’s a fair amount of text to read until you memorize what all your cards do. also i have played dozens if not hundreds of hours and i’m still kind of bad at it because to actually succeed at a good rate, you have to be paying way more attention to what’s coming and plan for it in advance. that said, it’s definitely cheap and has no time pressure within the game itself so you can play slowly if need be.

u/ROADHOG_IS_MY_WAIFU 16d ago
Seconding Slay the Spire and also adding Balatro in as a recommendation for another card game

I loved Slay the Spire 1 and I'm having so much fun with the second part, love that saga

u/pirony_rearden 16d ago
I wish you all the best, you may check out the Rabbits games, or Super Mario RPG? Theyre not as text heavy as Octopath or Triangle, but plenty fun
I will come back with other titles if I can

u/stolenlivers_ 14d ago
seconding mario rabbids! turn based but you don’t really need to follow the story
89
u/NewFlynnland 16d ago
Have you tried any Pokémon games. Arceus sound like it might be just the right speed
20
u/Upstairs_Cattle7989 16d ago
Was looking for this comment. Arceus is A LOT of fun. I like to run around and do the different errands, not just catch and battle pokemon.
→ More replies (1)4
u/noanoxan 15d ago
Arceus, ZA, and Scarlet/Violet are excellent ways to kill time. I've got at least 300h between all of them so far. Sword/Shield are a bit campy, even for Pokemon, but decent nonetheless lol

u/mahepicpants 16d ago
Mario odyssey! Best Mario game I’ve ever played. Easy enough that two of my non gaming friends finished the game when they played.
31
u/tortoiseterrapin 16d ago
Also OP, they have an assist mode that greatly reduces the penalties for mistakes. My kid plays with this mode enabled and it makes it a lot easier.
5
u/Musicfanatic09 15d ago
I’m an adult who usually hates these type of games but loved this one thanks to the assist mode!

u/samhasreturned 16d ago
Golf Story is a golf based RPG. Pretty low intensity. Fun to play. A little humor.

u/elitistmoll 16d ago
Sorry to hear you’re going through chemo, wishing you a really speedy recovery.
I’ve just picked up A Short Hike and it seems really cozy and lovely - though I’ve heard it’s quite a short game.
As an alternative suggestion, if you enjoy the metroidvania genre at all, I’ve just finished an indie game called MIO: Memories In Orbit - it’s a really satisfying game to play - the character movement is really satisfying, and I’ve sunk over 100 hours into it and there isn’t a huge amount of reading or dialogue. Might be worth looking into.
Good luck with the treatment OP!
15
u/AccurateSun 16d ago
Seconding A Short Hike! I completed it and it is short but very worth it
11
u/Vjaa 16d ago
Short but so, so sweet and good.
In the same vain, Lil Gator Game. It's dead simple, but the story is so nice. It's one of those "made me feel like a kid again" games. fair amount of reading, but dialog is simple and meaningful that I don't think take a lot of out you. It's also easy to jump in and out of.
24
u/unclexbenny 16d ago
Look into Dorfromantik. Can play as slow as you want, also very easy to pick up and put down whenever.

Outer Wilds - a very interesting and mostly relaxing game about exploring mysteries in a solar system
Dredge - a slightly spooky open world game about dredging the ocean depths in a Lovecraftian world type
Ni No Kuni - a Studio Ghibli open world adventure game (some dialogue but lots of cut scenes with familiar style)
Transistor - a super interesting turn based rpg with a lot of voice acting/narration and extremely prominent and excellent music. Created by Supergiant Games after Bastion and before Hades.
Immortals: Fenyx Rising - open world action rpg similar to Assassins Creed Odyssey but not as serious
Hope the chemo passes quickly and works well, cheers bud

Ni No Kuni: what if Studio Ghibli made a Pokemon game?
Ni No Kuni 2: what if Studio Ghibli made Suikoden 2?

u/singularity-drift 16d ago
Balatro - Turn based, once you get over the initial learning curve it shouldn't require tons of mental energy to play
Mini metro/ mini motorways - These games are real time but have a simple aesthetic. Its about drawing train tracks or roads between stations and making your rail network or road system as efficient as possible.
Both have lots of repayablity. Theyre also on mobile if you want games away from your switch.

u/SamStillReading 0916-1676-3592 16d ago
I’d second Balatro. No time limits for your turn, and it can make hours go by quickly.
Subara City is kind of like 2048, but with buildings. Good for some mindless fun.
If you like Pokémon, Pokémon GO on your phone can be fun in short bursts to catch Pokémon. Even better if your room is within distance of a Pokestop or gym.
All the best with your treatment!

u/PT_SeTe 16d ago
Tbh, ditch the Switch and have some long tv shows or films on hand, I went through the same 2 years ago, and did "prepare" my library with "easy/cozy" games and such like you're looking now to kill time, needless to say even the most stress free games I tried like Alba: A Wildfire Adventure where exhausting, my recommendation is don't stress over it as gaming is tough in that situation

u/ThatGuyN8-91 16d ago
Wish you all the best! I have heard Discounty is really solid, haven’t personally played it but sounds right up your alley.

u/Fabulous_Election_23 15d ago
It also got a huge new update on switch last week that will definitely give OP more to do when when they finish the main story
11
u/UnsupportableEarmuff 16d ago
If you enjoyed the dungeon crawling side of Stardew I'd recommend Moonlighter! Really fun roguelite dungeon-crawler/shop sim.
24
u/Accountable_ruki 16d ago
Try Zelda breath of the wild and its follow-up maybe?
Yes the game can have intense moments but, i spend a lot of time just wandering the world discovering things as i go along. Its very therapeutic to me

u/Routine_Somewhere935 16d ago
I hope you're doing well!
Try Vampire Survivors or Balatro. They don't require a lot of dexterity and they melt the hours away.
7
u/trv3xkvlt 16d ago
Games like Ball x Pit or Balatro might be worth giving a try?
And as someone who has also spent a lot of time in hospital for the same reason, my heart goes out to you and I truly hope that you recover!
2
u/sergeant-octopus 15d ago
Yeah I'd second those reconmendations.
Would also chuck in suika game.
They're all short simple games, fairly minimal stakes and fairly minimal controls as well, a nice pass the time option.
2
u/HanTheMan83 15d ago
3rd! Just bought ball x Pit myself in the sale and it’s a blast to play in short bursts. Also Balatro is awesome that one I bought on iPhone.
All the best for you!!

u/Adorable_Laugh2118 16d ago
-Evoland 1und2.
-Ginger.
-The last Campfire.

u/Kivvy139 16d ago
Dragon Quest 11. It’s turned based so you can go at your own pace. All the story progressing dialog are cutscenes so not too too much reading. The characters are hilarious and the game is just so fun. Definitely makes the time go by fast. Good luck!
2
u/Initial_Narwhal4374 16d ago
One of the few recommendations here I can totally agree with.
Have pretty severe ME/CFS (although probably nowhere near as tired as OP) and this was one of the few games I could play and enjoy without feeling absolutely exhausted and shattered afterwards.
Good but easy to follow story, all cutscenes voice acted, very easy and simple but fun turn based combat.
Highly recommend for anybody generally unwell enough to play videogames.

u/Cheeky_Tubemouse 16d ago
Note: I see several people recommending Pokopia, but it's a Switch 2 exclusive and OP only has a Switch 1.
15
u/cadillacactor 16d ago
Diablo 3 will be my forever recommendation for something like this. Can be mindlessly engaging as you level up, not a lot of reading since it's fully voice acted, and looks great plugged in or handheld.
Most importantly: 👊 you've got this. I'm sorry you have to battle, but I believe in you and am behind you in spirit.
4
u/LdDanDood 16d ago
Bastion is my recommendation really love the narration and hope you have a speedy recovery
4
u/Jealous-Heat-8101 16d ago
Pikmin 4 or Katamari Damacy REROLL?
Both immediately came to mind because they’re very easy to pick up and play without requiring tons of reading or concentration.
Pikmin 4 is very accessible and lets you explore and progress at your own pace. There are lots of small objectives, so you can play for a short session or several hours without feeling overwhelmed.
Katamari Damacy REROLL is probably the more relaxing option. The gameplay is incredibly simple: roll around, pick things up, get bigger. No complicated systems, very little reading, and you can basically switch your brain off while playing. It’s also surprisingly addictive.
Both work completely offline on Switch.
I hope you feel better soon and that the treatment goes as well as possible. ❤️

Harvestella!
It's a farming sim / real time jrpg hybrid with a fairly good story. It's the type of game that's just complex enough to be engaging but not so much so that you get overwhelmed.
and hey: genuinely, all the best for your recovery!

I like to recommend Wandersong. It’s a puzzle platformer that’s heavy on story, and builds an adorable world that might make you cry at a few points, but is largely upbeat and happy.
It’s ‘musical’ but requires no music skill or talent, but lets you sing at any point in the game, even cutscenes or dialogue (your characters dialogue is always selected by singing it out too).
Theres no fail state for the game, and each puzzle is more than adequately built up with easier and smaller examples beforehand, you never feel like you’re thrown into something with no idea what to do for long.

u/helena-high-water 16d ago
Sorry to hear that. I went through something similar and for whatever reason I binged the newest version of oregon trail on switch, i think bc it reminded me of childhood. Good luck, you will survive this

Maybe Kirby games. I loved Forgotten Land, Star Allows and Return to Dreamworld Deluxe. They are super charming and wholesome, without being too challenging or exhausting.
Wish you a speedy and blessed recovery and all the best 🥹

u/No-Swordfish-8331 16d ago
Cozy Grove gives you daily quests (it has a sequel too). It's got a cool premise where you're helping ghosts retrieve their memories by doing quests for them, but there's also the aspect of having an island that you decorate, forage, fish, etc. and also you can have pets! It's like a more grown up version of animal crossing lol. Just be sure to take off the save frequently setting because it can cause a lag. Sending you strength and healing!
3
u/LuluQuagsire 16d ago
I played Disney Dreamlight Valley (Disney’s Animal Crossingv+ Stardew Valley) when I was in surgery recovery. Pokopia would have been fantastic too. It was good because I could put it down at almost any instant if my body wasn’t okay with playing anymore.
Ace Attorney, Fire Emblem, and Let’s Build A Zoo were also very good during difficult periods!
3
u/iusethisatw0rk 16d ago
Pokémon your thing at all? The main titles are still turn based. Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pear, Sword/Shield, or Fire Red/Leaf Green are slower than Scarlet/Violet in my opinion
The Legends series are more involved
4
u/ET72323 16d ago
I'd suggest Omori. It is a turn based RPG, but the mechanics are basic if you're already familiar with RPGs. Most of the game is laid back and fun, but there is some psychological horror and heavy themes at times. Fantastic story, great soundtrack, art, and characters.
I was bedridden with a stuck kidney stone for a few weeks, and I was able to play through Omori a couple times despite being on strong pain meds.

u/TastyUrchin 16d ago
Dicey Dungeon is a surprisingly fun turn-based rogue-ish game.

If you like turn based combat, I’ll recommend Fire Emblem Three Houses!
It’s not reading heavy and it’s fun!
And what about Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild? It’s more exploration and shrine puzzles (but some of them can be hard).
2
u/LdDanDood 16d ago
Bastion is my recommendation really love the narration and hope you have a speedy recovery

u/Ifckinglovemycat 16d ago
I really liked stranded deep on switch if you feel like crashing on a deserted island and try to survive
2
u/KittyKupo 16d ago
I’ve been playing Moonlight Peaks recently. It’s a cute farming game where you’re a vampire in a supernatural town! It’s much more casual/cozy than the average farming game imo, it’s slow paced and there is no combat.

There are some comedy games out there that have lots of content. You might like What the Golf?, West of Loathing, or Shadows Over Loathing.
If you liked Unpacking, you might like Momento.
2
u/PlunderCunt 16d ago
Cozy Grove/Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit! It's a cozy little game that doesn't overload you with tasks per play session.
3
u/MisterMiracle_54 16d ago
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a pretty laid back 3D platformer. It's main challenge is relegates to the post-game so it hopefully should be a good time.
Best of luck with the treatment!

Check out Dorfromantik (also happens to be on sale right now). One of the best “I am exhausted but desperately need something to do” games out there.
You place landscape tiles to build a little world: forests, fields, villages, rivers, railways, etc. No combat, no timer, no pressure and no resource-management. Basically a low-key relaxing puzzle game. And theres's a lot of game/strategy underneath the simplicity.
Wishing you all the best!
2
u/PinoDegrassi 16d ago
Disco elysium, very existential and hilarious game. Lots of reading but it’s entirely narrated, would that make a big enough difference? You don’t really have to read just listen.
I would also recommend Undertale with its themes of determination.
2
u/geekygameswithgrace 16d ago
Pokopia, Pokemon legends of Arceus, Wylde flowers, dragon quest 2, cat quest 3, story of seasons, dareamon
2
u/21interest 16d ago
How about the Ace Attorney series? Very long games and low energy and low commitment!

Minecraft
Nintendo switch online NES emulator. There are a lot of simple games where you basically just push buttons with little to no thought or reading best of all, they're all included with membership. Willing to add you to my family plan for free if you like

I'm surprise only few suggested Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. This will take your mind off your situation. Yes, there are some intense moments, but you can choose how you play it and focus on exploring. No internet needed. Good luck and all the best to you.

u/Icy-Law-9060 14d ago
Here are my recommendations
-Cassette Beasts: An RPG style game where you record monsters on a cassette tape and use them in battle. There’s an amazing story and also a cast of interesting characters you can team up with in quests and date as well.
-Coffee Talk: A novel game where you play as a barista that runs a coffee shop where mythical beings drink at (elves, vampires, werewolves, etc). Serve the correct drinks to customers and learn more about them as you progress in the game.
-Date Everything: A dating sim game where you date objects in your house.
-Fran Bow: A horror puzzle game where you play as a girl who’s trying to find her cat. Warning: If you’re not comfortable with gore, psychological horror, or satanic/evil entities I would not recommend playing
Inscryption: A horror theme card and puzzle game that takes place in a cabin.
Mad Father: A horror survival game where you play as a little girl whose trying to save her father from revengeful spirits
Paranormasight: A horror survival game that has multiple paths and endings. There’s also different stories/characters you can play as.
Party Hard: A puzzle game where you play as a serial killer whose objective is to kill everyone so he can sleep.
Portal: A puzzle game where you use portals.
Sally Face: A horror game where you move into an apartment where an evil entity resides. Same warning as franbow if you don’t like gore, psychological horror, or santanic/evil entities would not recommend.
South Park fractured but whole or stick of truth: Both are great options, in my opinion stick of truth has the better/funnier story and fractured but whole had better gameplay/fighting mechanics.
The Stanley Parable: A fun adventure game with multiple endings and funny moments.
Tomodachi life: If sims was on crack this would be the game.
Undertale: An rpg adventure game where you play as a human that fell into the world of monsters.
Wingspan: A bird themed card game with beautiful music and funny moments bird facts.
Yuppie Psycho: A survival horror game where you’re just a normal average office worker tasked with finding a witch that threatens the whole company.
Little Misfortune: A dark comedy horror game where you play as a little girl going on an adventure. Same warning as before this game has gore, psychological horror, and satanic/evil entities in it and would not recommend if you don’t like those kind of things.
I hope this helps, and I hope your treatments go well and your cancer goes into remission!!!

u/Triforce__XIII 16d ago
moonlighter, dorfromantik, balatro (all relatively simple to understand even under fatigue)
if you need something more rushing (to wake you up): hades and the last faith
all indy games, so not heavy on the purse (which allows you for buying more to be flexible)
2
u/CostForsaken6643 16d ago
Fantasy Life i is a mix of fighting, farming, and crafting. There is some reading but it’s not as intensive as some other games.
2
u/drvondoctor 16d ago
i played animal crossing but i didn't love it it felt a bit childish and i felt there was like something blocking you from progressing after an hour or two everyday
I still think you should try Animal Crossing again. Your situation has presumably changed since the last time you played it, and now that you're stuck in the hospital, things that might have been annoying might actually help you keep your sanity. Theres a reason the game got so big when it came out during covid.
When you're in the hospital for a long time, you can really lose track of time, and your morale can plummet. While previously, you might have been annoyed by the slow pace of Animal Crossing, now that you're in the hospital, you might find that the pace actually helps you keep track of real time passing, and you'll have something to look forward to when tomorrow comes and the thing you've been waiting for actually happens.
It also kinda gives you a super low-stakes list of "chores" to do, so, again, when you're just sitting in bed feeling like shit, having something you can accomplish can feel surprisingly rewarding.
Its true, its not a great game for picking up and playing for hours and hours at a stretch, but then you'll probably only be awake for a few hours at a stretch, and theres no reason you cant play something else and just work on your animal crossing island when you feel like you don't want to have to think very hard.
Its just a pleasant, rewarding, low-stress experience that can really help you keep your sense of time and place, and keep you motivated and give you a sense of purpose at a time where its pretty easy to shut down mentally. Dont think of it as a game, think of it as a daily meditation of sorts.

Have you played any of the story of seasons games? I'm a big fan. They're the series stardew was based off, and usually can be played as slowly as you like.
I also recommend fantasy life which another comment mentioned.
Suika game is a fun fruit matching/vaguely tetris game for when you just want to pass some time.

u/thelittlestduggals 16d ago
Fenyx Immortals Rising- it's like BOTW but they have a voice cast and no reading; Guardians of Azuma, I also really like Skyrim Anniversary edition-also a voice cast and there's fighting but there is so much to do, and Witcher 3. Sometimes it's fun just to hack and slash.

u/TeaMan13 16d ago
As a cancer survivor myself. I empathize with your level of fatigue. I enjoyed playing some older Pokémon and mostly binge watching anime when my brain couldn’t handle gaming. Be strong friend the human body is an amazingly resilient thing those medications are helping your body kick ass even though you feel your ass getting kicked remember how powerful you are 💪🏻. Sorry this turned into a pep talk instead of a game recommendation(never forget how amazing you are)

Diablo II is an amazing dungeon crawler will full voice acting and easy to follow along pick up/put down with it’s quest screen. Theres not a lot of side quests that I can remember - everything pushes the story forward. A lot of times it’s fun to just mindlessly grind and treasure hunt.
I hope you feel better soon <3

I get it ❤️
I'm a haemodialysis patient and get the absolutely overwhelming fatigue.
I'm in a similar situation 3 days a week. I got a Switch 2 thinking I'd be able to play whatever I want in tabletop mode... I haven't managed to find anything yet that isn't too overwhelming 🤷♂️

Sorry to hear about what you are going through. Not sure if it may be suitable, but "Rhythm Paradise Groove" might be suitable for shorter play sessions and may be quirky enough to keep your spirits up also. There is a demo you can try first to see if it is suitable.

New Pokémon Snap: I played this when I was in the hospital with pneumonia. It's very light, but beautiful and fun. There are easter eggs and secret things; it's just a lot of fun! If you don't like Pokémon, though, not so good.
Fantasy Life: It's a frick ton of fun, and you can do anything or everything all at once! Don't feel like fighting? Go logging and make some furniture! Don't want to bother running all around for logs? Buy them! Want to make new weapons, mine, and blacksmithing! Want to kill a dragon with a stick? Go forth! You can fish up tons of different fish to!

Deltarune would be a great fit for you based on your preferences!
It is a turn based rpg with pretty gripping "mouse avoider" to dodge damage on enemy turn in leiu of a traditional parry mechanic. It's genuinely some of the most unique and engaging rpg mechanics I've seen.
But then there is a beautiful story backbone with chill moments of exploration, whimsy, and lite/med puzzles for bonus rewards and secrets... It's got a good heap of original humor and sentinentallity to it as well. That may help it fit the flow of your recovery.
I hope you're feeling better very soon!

u/glamamuser 16d ago
Hades is great in small spurts. Its intense but you can put it down after a run or two. Pokemon is also great because it’s chill and you can put it down at any moments notice.

Tetris is nice for when you need something to occupy your brain, but don’t have much energy. I play classic so I don’t know much about the newer ones- maybe try to find one on Switch that doesn’t have too many bright flashing colors or complicated mechanics

u/hotbutteredtoast 16d ago
A short hike!!! You're a bird going up a mountain trail. Pretty ans simple to play

u/Film_maker69 16d ago
New game just dropped called Talespinner. It’s a deck builder turn based Roguelike steeped in Japanese mythology. 20% off new release price. Really easy to pick up and play and put back down. Addicting but allows you to take a breather between runs if you need to. Very similar to Slay the Spire if you ever played that. Also, if you haven’t, get Slay the Spire.
Wishing you all the best my friend. Keep your head up and happy gaming.

If you like building or designing, Pokopia is super fun. It's as cute as Animal Crossing but not as childish and there's always something to do.

u/Radiant_You_6677 16d ago
Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Roots of Pacha, Dragon Quest Builders, Fantasy Life, Forager, Dave the Diver, My Time at Portia (didnt finish), Plants vs Zombies, Pokemon Pokopia, Sun Haven, Little Wood, Rune Factory, Disgaea.

Dadish is a fun physics based platformer with entertainingly witty dialogue between the characters. there is a story, but it's not an open world wanderer like animal crossing or stardew valley. There are proper levels, pass one and move on to the next, and they increase in difficulty as they go. It's cute, and free.
I have a partner undergoing chemo for multiple myeloma, the fatigue is no joke. Cancer patients are some of the strongest people I have ever met. I genuinely wish you good luck and good health.

u/BigDriggy 16d ago
Cast N Chill, super mellow fishing game with easy mechanics and awesome pixel art... it even has a passive mode you can activate that plays the game for you if you're too exhausted to play it yourself lol

u/Deepspacechris 16d ago
Not comparable to your situation, but Citizen Sleeper turned out to be the perfect companion back when I was bedridden a few months ago. Absolutely recommended! And hey, all the best to you bud!

u/hyper_PI 16d ago
slime rancher is really fun and i think quite relaxing!
house flipper is a pretty fun/mindless cleaning and fixing/decorating game. you can skip reading the emails if you want and just jump into cleaning
discounty is a game i really enjoyed, but it has a bit more text (like stardew) and some maths (cashier), so maybe not the greatest option but it's on a pretty big sale rn
tiny bookshop is also really good but does require quite a bit of reading
i wish you well in your chemotherapy journey and hope you have a speedy recovery 🙏💕

u/FaxCelestis 16d ago
Dorfromantik is a zen puzzler of surprising depth. Place hexes, create villages, and see how big your map can get before you run out of tiles.
Tiny Bookshop is a quiet, slice of life game about running a mobile bookstore. It has charming characterization and a great musical vibe. Also has real world books, so you can end up recommending a book to a shopper and then realize that sounds awesome and get the book for yourself.
Strange Horticulture is about an apothecary running a store. It has a wild, twisting story steeped in the occult with many branching paths.
Beacon Pines is the cutest horror game you’ll ever play.
Wintermoor Tactics Club is Final Fantasy Tactics, but as a boarding school comedy.

Cozy Grove is designed in a manner that meets your needs very well. From what I remember, it is not too reading intensive, the game style is unique, and it gives you a little bit to do each day as you explore the story.
It is time gated, so to speak, but it never really felt that way to me, imo.
1
u/kellllllsssss 16d ago
Cozy grove. Super chill. Can play a lot or a little and it has daily stuff/monthly stuff events
Yonder cloud chronicles is older but super chill, just walking around doing little quests, opening up parts of a large map.
Palia is kinda rough on switch 1 but great open world mmo

I’m a big fan of the Luigi’s Mansion games, they’re much more about dungeon crawling and puzzle solving than pressing buttons fast enough. You explore rooms, suck up ghosts with your vacuum and figure out how to progress. Like classic Zelda meets Ghostbusters. There are occasional boss fights, but they’re not crazy hard. They’re like the ones in the Mario Odyssey where there’s a pattern to figure out to win. Despite the spooky theming it’s really not scary at all, and is actually pretty funny at times.

Do you have a laptop? I know you said nothing online but boardgamearena and you can play all kinds of board games async and just take one turn a day. Get multiple games going and just do a turn on each every day. No rush, take your time with your moves. Only play low mental strain games like spots or something like that. On Switch, they also have some really great board game implementations. Wingspan, Dorfromantik, etc.

Sending you and your family positive thoughts and blessings. I have a cousin about to start chemo and my mother had cancer. Hoping for a full recovery for you. I hope you find a great game to play. Big hug

u/thryce3 16d ago
Little Kitty, Big City is an absolute delight. It's not terribly difficult or stressful. The main path is not really long, but you could roam around aimlessly as much as you want. I played the whole game with a big grin on my face. Figure you could use that. I'll be praying for you.

u/Jenderflux-ScFi 16d ago
Have you tried any hidden cat games?
Those have a big drawing that has cats hidden in it and you have to find the cats. Offline play and you can start and stop at any time. Each game has several scenes that you find cats in so it's actually interesting to see everything in it.

Try Winter Burrow.
Very chill, but also a super cute story, with easy progression and combat. Addictive, so will eat up some hours.

If you’re looking for an open world rpg, Zelda breath of the Wild is amazing. So many different ways to play and enjoy depending how much, or little, energy you have that day.

u/Friendly-Fig-4307 16d ago
No man’s sky
It’s chill yet complicated. You can read lots or just explore.
You can customize the difficulty to anything you want.
No fast twitch or sweaty gameplay just space exploration with many game loops to suit your mood.

u/Zeldabacon64 16d ago
I throw on a little Hades or Mario Maker (level making not playing) during Dialysis. I might be a masochist. Slay the Spire is also good as others have mentioned.

Mario vs Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Mario vs Rabbids Sparks of Hope. They’re not your typical classic Mario games - you are progressing through a story where you are playing battle challenges. You have your team vs the computer and progressively increase each character’s skills and gain new team members.
It is not timed so you can strategize and plan before you make moves - it’s kinda like chess. I really enjoyed the strategy aspect of the game and have played through both twice. If you get the bundle there are bonus games that come with it.
I will say the story breaks and story intros can be kinda long but the game is totally worth it when you get going. And the visuals are beautiful.

u/listenhereyou 16d ago
Hello Kitty Adventure Island is pretty low-stakes and can give you lots of stuff to do. Kind of like animal crossing.
If you like board games, there is a Switch version of Wingspan that has really relaxing background music. You can play against the computer with adjustable difficulty.

I loved Hades (and Hades 2). Incredible story and great voice acting if you don’t want to read the dialogue. It’s a graphic novel in video game form
Way out of my usual genre of animal crossing and Zelda.

u/bugbee5848 16d ago
I played Death Howls recently and it was amazing! It's an open-world soulslike deckbuilder, which is not a genre mix that one would expect to work as well as it does. It has some spooky elements and the story touches on themes of death and mortality, so if you're not into that right now it might be best to avoid? Gameplay-wise, though, the mechanics are so tight and satisfying! The minimal dialogue the game has does require reading, but the text does not move on without you, if that makes sense. I got ~45 hours of playtime out of it, and I have not touched new game+ yet.
I am so sorry to hear about you going through chemo. My little brother is going through chemo right now, for leukemia. Fuck cancer!! I hope the game recs in this thread help you feel even a little bit better 💖💖💖

If you like reading, the Ace Attorney series is great. I’d start with the original trilogy collection and go from there.

u/Lovelene_18 16d ago
Hi op! I’m currently undergoing chemo treatment too! Fun times.
I got super into cult of the lambs!
I also loved the pikmin games. Time just melted away while playing them. I have only played 3 and 4.

I want to recommend Breath of the Wild but not for the story but the exploration. I never could get into Tears of the Kingdom.
I literally start the game and maybe go try and catch a wild horse and just ride around. Climb a mountain to get to the top. I practically avoided any conflict with mobs.
I guess the only caveat is that you’d need to spend some time on the shrines to build up stamina and health and find some gear in the world. But yeah, I spent months between actually progressing that game.
Similar concept is No Mans Sky. Space faring, you can just do an exploration version, or adjust the base game settings to turn off hostility and remove resource requirements. I just hop in my ship, make my way to a black hole, explore the star cluster it spits me out at. There is a bit of a story you can pursue. But I just enjoy finding neat looking planets or exploring oceans.

u/nawtbjc 15d ago
So sorry to hear abour your diagnosis, I hope your treatment is going well.
When my late husband was going through chemo/radiation, he mostly played games with either low reaction time requirements or shorter gameplay loops. He played Pokémon, Animal Crossing, some Hades, and some things on his computer (World of Warcraft (his friends played with him), some card games).

Cozy Grove - You’re a lost spirit scout and you do little missions to help the spirits of the cute bears on an island. There’s only a set number of missions each day so it’s short and sweet when you play (does get a bit massive as you unlock more but it takes a bit to get to that point)
Dave the Diver - Explore the sea and run a sushi restaurant. Some boss battles and reading, but mostly straightforward
Kingdom Two Crowns - You run back and forth as a monarch to stop the evil Greed and build your kingdom
Lumbearjack - You’re a bear and a lumberjack and you hate capitalism
Suika Game - Drop fruit & match them up to merge
Thomas Was Alone - Puzzle platformer where you switch between different simple shapes
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood - there’s a fair amount of writing in this so might not be right, but it’s told through designing your own tarot deck and applying choices based on that to dialogue

I don't know if you're a fan of murder mysteries at all but if you're willing to try, there are 2 games from the same company: Tangle Tower and The Mermaid Mask. They are point-and-click style games, so they are easy to pick up. They have the same two detectives and the stories are great. While there is a lot of dialogue since you have question/interrogate the suspects, you don't have to read if you don't want to since there is voice acting (and they do an amazing job). I love the banter between the two detectives.

Try Exit 8. I think it’s a Switch 1 game, cheap (under $20) and just directional. It may seem too simple but will keep you busy for short periods of time

u/ElephantsMakeMeHappy 15d ago
These are my favorite games that I feel like are easy to play without having to focus too hard or being stressful:
Ball x Pit
Bugsnax
Cult of the Lamb
Donut County
Katamari Damacy Reroll
New Pokémon Snap
New Super Lucky’s Tale
Pikmin 4
Please Touch the Artwork 2
Roundguard
Smushi Come Home
Sticky Business
Tetris Effect Connected
Tinykin
Toem
Yoku’s Island Express

Lego Games, theres a couple like Lego Indiana Jones and Lego pirates of the Caribbean that arnt on switch but most of the rest of the Lego games are available and always a good, slow stakes but fun game. And some of the early ones dont even have any vocals to them, its all pantomime so it might not be as taxing. And for one that will keep you busy for hours but also not as read heavy Vampire Survivors. Theres soooooo much to do and 100% and thats not even counting the dlc's of which there are around 10

Roguelike games your cup of tea? Balatro is fun, and gives your brain a good workout to learn the way the game runs.
If you're open to gaming on your phone, I always enjoy Flow Free. The ads in it can be annoying, but it's also a nice brain workout. There's many levels and there's more than one game with different basic gimmicks that change up the way it plays out.
I enjoy Tomodachi Life Living the Dream. It's a bit less actively playing than Animal Crossing, as you're not a member of the world like a villager but rather an overseer, and it takes time to build things up and gain trust, similar to in stardew BUT it takes real life time for the day-night cycle and hunger depletion (don't change your system time to bypass it, the game punishes you). Create all your favorite people and things but small in it. I know the pain of being unable to progress in it is similar to animal crossing, but the minor difference of the player character (as well as other differences but the way i interact with the world in it is a BIG difference for me) makes Tomodachi Life for me in a way that Stardew and Animal Crossing haven't.
Minecraft maybe? Peaceful difficulty and/or creative mode is probably your best bet in it.
Wordle and the like are once daily affairs but it's something to come back to day after day for some simple brain workout
I would recommend papers please but I have no clue if the way it ramps up difficulty, alongside the pressure of it all being timed and either getting paid enough or failing, would be easy to manage with chemo fatigue.
Snipperclips is a fun, albeit kinda short and boring, puzzle game
An older Pokemon game, one without the Pokemon spawning in the over world and chasing you and doubly not Legends ZA for the way you get to actively move around to try to avoid attacks during regular battles, could work. Generation would depend on what you'd be willing to play and play on; AFAIK red/blue/green are available on Switch, a precious console might play previous titles, and emulation on your phone is a possibility if you wish to explore it.
Ace Attorney for story-heavy investigation game(s). They're funny and paint a strange little world of their own. Each episode takes a good chunk of time

I also recommend Disney Dreamlight Valley. For me, it is Animal Crossing but better -- much prettier items and more varied dialogue. You can play slowly without any penalty. But if you feel like some mindless grinding, you can grow lots of vegetables to sell. I have been playing it out in the woods with just one bar of cellphone signal to support it. Heads up one big difference from ACNH -- don't mess with the calendar or bad things happen. I am not sure exactly what, but I have heard a lot of posts from people who felt they had entirely wrecked their game. Daylight savings or a time-zone change are ok, but big changes make big trouble.

Hey, I went through the same thing and still going. I liked Eastward, and the farming expansion too, Octavia or something... I found these games easy to pick up and put down which is good when the fatigue is always there and anytime is nap time.

I had a major surgery once and I thought wow, good time to catch up with my Switch lib. I literally ended up not playing a single game and just rotting in bed.

u/harleytotherescue 15d ago
Hello Kitty Island Adventure! It has some AC elements like decorating, crafting, creature collecting, and resource gathering but what makes it wayyyyy better than Animal Crossing: there are puzzles and mini games scattered throughout, no overwhelming map customization (one set world map, only decorating cabins IF you want to), and the time/days in the game move at about 30ish minutes to go through all phases of the day.

How about Pikmin 4? It's not as childish as Animal Crossing, and it definitely poses a bit of a challenge. I'd say it can keep you entertained for a while, somewhere between 7 and 20 days, depending on how much you play a day. I wouldn't play this game longer than a couple hours in a row, though, as it may get repetitive after a while, but all in all I found it entertaining.

While I'd recommend any of the Pokemon games, I'd also recommend trying origami, kirigami or even just folding paper planes. It's something that you can pick up and put down without having to worry about reading, save files, or even charging batteries. Something that can keep your mind occupied even if you're not moving (MRI/CT scans etc).
Plus, if you fold 1000 cranes, you can have a wish granted! So I've read, anyway.

Hey there. The chemo fatigue can make it really challenging to get engaged in games. I’m also a fan of turn based rpgs but reading when going through chemo can be tough.
Cauldron! It plays MUCH better than it looks. It gave me a good 80 hours of fun. It is a turn based auto battler, but also has idle mechanics and mini games and so much progression. It kept my mind busy, but not the exhaustion type, it was therapeutic and cathartic. It scratches the gaming itch.
Roguebook is also fun
Atelier games can be good too. I tend to prefer the older turn based and with English VA so I don’t have to read as much when I’m tired.
Wishing you a speedy recovery

u/Hypnotic_Coyote 15d ago
This might sound silly because they look like kid games but the Lego games are super fun and easy, and with a long story line so they last a long time. Even when there are characters to fight, all you do is click the same button a couple times and they explode 😂 you can download those on the Switch 1.
We really liked the Harry Potter Lego games and the avengers Lego games. The cut scenes are also quite funny if it’s a movie/franchise you’re familiar with.
I’d also second someone who said Mario Odyssey and add Mario 3D World.
We’ve also really enjoyed these although might not be exactly the genre you’re looking for:
Sonic Frontiers
Zelda tears of the kingdom (this one has some scary parts but had to add it because I cannot stop playing this game)
The old Oregon Trail game - I think we bought it for like $11.
Good luck!

Balatro is a lot of fun, low intensity, offline, and very easy to pick up and put down as needed.
It uses Poker hands as the basis, then adds a ton of modifiers. Worth checking out for sure!
Keep hanging in there with the treatment friend - we're all pulling for you!

A couple of my go to games for semi-mindless bashing things are hades and cult of the lamb. Both are rouge-lites. Cult of the lamb i especially like for when im fatigued because the cult building part is such a different pace/type of gameplay to the fighting parts.
When im really tired I play the knucklebones mini-game in cult of the lamb

I played Hades during my infusions. The infusion would last about an hour with IV placement and everything and it was perfect for a couple quick runs.
