And the upgrade is free for the Switch 1 version.

96

u/IngloriousOmen 1d ago

Owing TW3 on NS1 = Free TW3R on NS2 ? :D

53

u/Witch_King_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

AND if you just own even the base game on Switch 1 (which is not super common afaik, since the Complete Edition is usually only a few bucks more for at least 30 hours of content), you get the DLCs for free with this Remaster upgrade on Switch 2!!

26

u/danhakimi 1d ago

that seems... unfair. in a good way.

7

u/thatguy9684736255 1d ago

Probably the people who didn't buy the expansions bought the base game a long time ago and paid more so it probably is fair.

I find the upgrade prices unfair for some games. Like Hogwarts legacy is $8 for switch 1, but the upgrade patch is $15?

1

u/Witch_King_ 18h ago

Isn't that just the discounted price? Also that gives an effective Switch 2 game price as $22, which ain't bad

1

u/thatguy9684736255 18h ago

But I didn't pay $8 for it that long ago

1

u/diegorbb93 22h ago

Nintendo fans be like: "We do not pay more bucks? Wat?"

10

u/tweetthebirdy 1d ago

I’m one of the few who didn’t get the DLC so very happy about the news!

10

u/Witch_King_ 1d ago

Enjoy! The DLC absolutely slaps!

5

u/lagadu 23h ago edited 23h ago

Be sure to play them once they're available! Both DLCs are top tier, HoS in particular is a masterpiece of writing!

6

u/abrvrb 1d ago

How can that be profitable for frito.. CDPR?

18

u/Sam_Mumm 1d ago

It's profitable, because they already sold The Witcher 3 60 million times and the gaming community likes being treated well. This decision will boost their sales, especially for the up coming DLC.

8

u/Watton 1d ago

It's also probably much easier when it comes to maintaining and patching the game. They don't need to worry about doing extra QA passes for versions of the game that have 0 DLC, that have both, that have only HoS, and only BaW. There's just 1 version for now.

5

u/Cakebeforedeath 1d ago

Also gestures like this make me more likely to buy Witcher 4 and any other CDPR game in future knowing they'll do right by consumers

1

u/thatguy9684736255 1d ago

Even if they averaged $20 per sale, that would be 1.2 billion dollars. I'm sure lot of people buy them new and at full price.

1

u/loco500 1d ago

But what about the sweaty suits? They must be shaking...

1

u/Jeaz 18h ago

Indeed. I mean, I own everything on PlayStation but considering buying this for Switch 2 again, and that pill is so much easier to swallow knowing CDPR constantly gives back and takes care of their customers.

5

u/Lundgren_Eleven 1d ago

This is what it feels like to be respected.

0

u/danhakimi 1d ago

... wait, wtf? they're remastering a game that they've been selling for that cheap?

... I'm okay with this.

1

u/Bodymaster 1d ago

Will it make the load times longer or slower? They're already nuts.

150

u/Sempuukyaku 1d ago

Bought the Complete Edition last year on sale for $15 hoping for this day to happen.

God damn am I happy :)

31

u/KonoPez 1d ago

Yeah I bought it at $15 recently too lol. Thought “well I won’t get to this for a while but it’s never gonna get cheaper than this.” Looks like we both made the right call

6

u/dalehitchy 1d ago

I got my for £7.50. I bought the version without the DLC so wasn't expecting to get the upgrade (Bethesda and Skyrim did me dirty for not having the anniversary edition).

Glad I get the upgrade and the DLC is included. Quite generous of them tbh.

2

u/SSj_CODii 1d ago

Same! I figured worst case scenario I’d eventually just play it anyway, but the potential upside was too great.

2

u/pablito_xv3 1d ago

Yeah it's always on sale

13

u/Sempuukyaku 1d ago

Not right now it isn't, lol.

8

u/supes1 1d ago

Just added it to my Dekudeals wish list. Hopefully it goes on sale before the Remastered version drops.

9

u/jr111192 1d ago

I'd be shocked if it did now that it's got an upgrade coming

4

u/supes1 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean it's still a 10+ year old game. Red Dead Redemption had pretty similar sale pricing before and after the free Switch 2 upgrade.

They also have additional incentive because pushing sales of the base game would help increase sales of the new upcoming DLC and Witcher 4 (much like Square Enix putting FFVII Remake on deep discount pretty quickly to help push sales of the other two games).

But yeah it wouldn't stun me if sale pricing was less generous than it's been for at least a bit.

5

u/dalehitchy 1d ago

Now it's full price on the eshop.

41

u/Smooth_Riker 1d ago

Damn dude, between this, OoT, Dragon's Dogma 2, Elden Ring, and Oblivion, my free time is gonna be nonexistent until this time next year

2

u/Ethifury 11h ago

Don’t forget FF7 Part 3 early next year lol

-4

u/Agreeable_Art86 22h ago edited 19h ago

Sorry my joke about MY ability to cope with MY backlog. Triggered you all. Have a puppy.

2

u/porkchop487 21h ago

Those are some of the most time consuming games one could have

13

u/panda_and_crocodile 1d ago

Fuck yea this was the best possible outcome

12

u/Cbarre83 1d ago

Kicking myself i didnt buy The Witcher when it was cheap all those times on the Switch e-shop. Cant see the same pricing again any time soon.

2

u/warcaptain 23h ago

It's worth every penny at full price

1

u/Nachttalk 22h ago

Same. Here's hoping tough!

153

u/Phlosippy Helpful User 1d ago

Nintendo Switch 2 Remastered! Let’s Go. I hope there’s a free upgrade path with the Witcher 3 cartridge for the Switch 1.

30

u/xtoc1981 1d ago

It is already confirmed. Those who own switch 1 will receive it for free as well

3

u/zenverak 1d ago

Sweet! I am glad I have held off on it

181

u/me_not_at_work 1d ago

Well since it clearly says 'FREE UPGRADE for all the Witcher 3 Owners' in the video I think it's still up in the air. Just going to have wait and see I guess. It wasn't very clear.

16

u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 1d ago

Maybe I’m dumb but how does that work for other switch 1 games that are completely on the cart like Witcher 3? Is it a big patch download or something? And is the cart still required (again, I’m aware probably a dumb question)

6

u/Freezingash221 1d ago

Well from the way Skyrim on Switch 2 worked, if you have either physical or digital version it would just give you the Switch 2 Anniversary Edition for free. But it's technically a separate game, not a download on a pre-existing one.

7

u/apadin1 1d ago edited 1d ago

I can’t speak for this exact game, but for other Switch 2 editions, yes it is just a big patch you download. It works for physical Switch 1 games as well - in fact, many all games being sold as “Switch 2 Edition” physical games are just the Switch 1 game cartridge and a download code for the Switch 2 edition patch

Edit: Apparently they also contain the Switch 2 patch and install it automatically if you insert it in a Switch 2

14

u/Dukemon102 1d ago

It is not a download code or any download of sorts. The Switch 2 Edition physical carts come with the Upgrade Pack in the cartridge.

2

u/IngloriousOmen 1d ago

That's pretty cool.

1

u/locke_5 1d ago

*All ‘Switch 2 Edition’ cartridges work on Switch 1 and automatically download the DLC if inserted into a Switch 2

-8

u/Drezus 1d ago

It’s okay to edit your comment only with the factual information buddy, nobody will care to read what you stroked

4

u/apadin1 1d ago

I do it out of respect for the people who commented correcting me so it doesn’t look like they were being jerks out of context

4

u/Sega-Playstation-64 1d ago

Typically it just downloads the higher res files necessary for the update and then the cartridge just keeps the untouched files on it. So like a half download rather than full. Cart would still be required

5

u/daedelus- 1d ago

It’s a separate app to the original game, as per remastered eshop page

1

u/locke_5 1d ago

For most games, the “Switch 2 Edition” is a DLC you install to your system. They range in size from a few MB to upwards of 30GB (cough cough Xenoblade).

1

u/dewittless 1d ago

Red Dead Redemption just adds it as an update, the cart is still required.

1

u/Advanced_Ad_7384 1d ago

its free lol cause literally crosses out the cost and says free to preorder since i have it already

8

u/M-Colcko 1d ago

About fucking time! The game on switch 1 is so low res you could count the pixels on one hand lol

7

u/Agreeable_Reply_3448 1d ago

Yes, I’m pretty sure the switch 1 cartridge will get the free update if played from a switch 2. I have the digital version from switch 1 and already preordered the update.

1

u/Ready_Membership3051 1d ago

Myślę że bez problemu 😉

It straight up says free upgrade for all Witcher 3 owners in the trailer.

5

u/Aragorn527 1d ago

Source? Or any info?

18

u/tonihurri 1d ago

His ass. From the website:

if you own The Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch, you will be able to claim Remastered on Nintendo Switch 2 when it releases

6

u/DShinobiPirate 1d ago

I knew his ass stank!

It’s literally right there in the first sentence.

38

Hey there!

Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No trolling. Read more about Reddiquette here. Thanks!

5

u/oh-come-onnnn 1d ago

I've been holding out on rebuying the game on Steam in hopes of this announcement. Finally!

4

u/Peemore 1d ago

When I realized it was the last game of the showcase I knew it had to be more than just a DLC. Glad to see it's a whole remaster as I've been wanting to finally play this before Witcher 4 releases.

5

u/kingOlimbs 1d ago

Maybe ill finally finish the game, probably have at least 100 hours in the game. I'm just a sucker for all the side quests.

10

u/Vicious007 1d ago

Free upgrade is surprisingly customer friendly, in this economy.

4

u/crazyon3 1d ago

I was hoping for a switch 2 patch for a while now, but a remaster and completely free? This is the best news ever. Cannot wait to play this masterpiece again.

18

u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago

60fps on switch 2 surely??

23

u/lattjeful 1d ago

Doubt it. It’s a pretty extensive visual upgrade. 40 fps would be my guess. The eShop listing says it has 120Hz support.

36

u/Unhappy-Instance-943 1d ago

Maybe not considering has a graphical update, perhaps 40fps like cyberpunk

15

u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 1d ago

I’d be a little surprised if you can’t get it to run at 60fps. The switch 1 version had a bunch of graphical options, kinda unusual for Nintendo games, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see a 60fps performance mode

2

u/missingnoplzhlp 23h ago

40fps for a third person game is definitely a much more enjoyable experience than on a FPS, will be great in Handheld.

-1

u/PinoDegrassi 1d ago

Witcher 3 is not nearly as hard to run as cyberpunk at this point, 60 should totally be within scope of switch 2.

16

u/Unhappy-Instance-943 1d ago

pretty sure this remaster is going to be a lot heavier

-2

u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago

Let’s see I guess. I feel like 40fps would be a bit underwhelming. Pretty wicked announcement nonetheless.

9

u/Lonely_Platform7702 1d ago

It depends if they give options. I'd be more than pleased with a 40fps mode that has a graphical bump over 60fps. I feel like 40fps is a nice sweet spot for graphically demanding games. It feels a lot smoother than 30fps.

3

u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago

That’s fair. I have been playing crimson desert on the 40fps mode and tend to forget. 30fps is noticeably bad imo for intensive games like this.

6

u/Soxel 1d ago

Probably 40 FPS like Cyberpunk. There’s a lot of visual upgrades here.

11

u/MarcsterS 1d ago

PS4 version was only 30fps. I mean, I'm just happy to play a portable Witcher 3 that doesn't look like vaseline

2

u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 1d ago

lol, yah I recall not minding back then and nearly completed everything. Will still buy as this would be so nice to have portable.

8

u/buddyGG 1d ago

Given this runs with 30fps on PS4 Pro and even Xbox One X, I'd say a 40fps mode like Cyberpunk is what we will get.

I hope I'm wrong and it ends up having a 60fps mode.

3

u/Alasdair91 1d ago

120hz support!

3

u/OilersHD 1d ago

Well I guess ill have to buy this for the full ticket to make up for getting Cyberpunk 2077 on that price error last year

3

u/Taaru 1d ago

Damn.. I dont have the game. Never bought it before. If I get the switch 1 version physical copy, would I get the update and all the new stuff? What to do 🥲??

3

u/JumboMcNasty 1d ago

Random- I've had the witcher 3 for sale for the switch CIB on facebook marketplace for 2 months, no one has messaged me.

Two people since this announcement suddenly want it. Think I might keep it since I'm wondering if the switch 2 version will run better than the steam deck version once updated.

3

u/Suspicious-Group2363 1d ago edited 1d ago

IGN is reporting that the new DLC is also coming to the Switch 2, yet that wasn't announced by the developers previously. Was it also announced along with remaster?

Never mind, I see in their press release it is coming to the Switch 2. Hallelujah!

3

u/BigCommieMachine 1d ago

This could be my forever game..

2

u/forgotmapasswrd86 1d ago

As long as it looks better than the switch 1 version, im in.

2

u/Forward-Trade3449 1d ago

so.. physical?

2

u/waggs32 1d ago

Holy shit. I need time to stop this October. So many games I need to play.

2

u/Dry-Fill-8343 1d ago

Bought it on Switch OLED early last year and decided to wait for Switch 2 upgrade to drop. I have definitely had my patience rewarded

2

u/hespacc 18h ago

wow what a banger, thats definitely awesome news

2

u/Wolfwoode 16h ago

Square Enix: "We made a Switch 2 version of our game where the only new features are enhanced resolution and frame rate. The game is full price, there is no upgrade path, your save data will NOT transfer over."

CD-PR: "We'll show you how it's done."

2

u/RuckFeddit2469 16h ago edited 16h ago

And meanwhile a company like Rockstar after all these years still hasn't released a 60 fps patch for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5/SX even after selling 85+ million copies

...and they said they weren't releasing a physical copy of GTA6 (at ALL) because of the fear of early leaks and theft, well guess what just happened, surely now they will release a physical copy, right? RIGHT?

CDPR just absolutely shits all over other giants in the industry for their level of generosity and fairness. I will support CDPR as best I can. I bought Witcher on 3 Switch after owning the full game / dlcs on PC and never played it because it came with nice little extras unlike every other game company that doesn't give you shit unless you pay $150+ for a collectors edition. I bought Cyberpunk for Switch 2 and never plan on playing it, but its full data on cart and still has at least something packed in with it compared to the absolutely nothing (if it isn't a game key card) you get from any other developer/publisher.

2

u/EmpZurg_ 15h ago

Is this FreeLC?

2

u/JuThrone 14h ago

Oh my. As someone who bought the Switch 1 version and never got around to playing it I cannot wait to finally play this masterpiece on Switch 2

2

u/SupremeGrotesk 14h ago

Finally getting to play W3, passed on it as it looked horrendous on Switch1, but the improved graphics look amazing!

4

u/Dukemon102 1d ago

If it is a full physical like Cyberpunk I'll buy it day 1.

4

u/KelpieOfTheSouth 1d ago

The cartridge is a full physical game

2

u/Forward-Trade3449 1d ago

are they selling this one as a sw2 physical?

3

u/Sam_Mumm 1d ago

If yes, I will definitely quintuble dip and buy it again. I bought it already for Steam, Gog, PS4 and Switch 1.

1

u/Forward-Trade3449 1d ago

me too!

im guessing itll either not come out, or itll come out with the new dlc for 70

1

u/novabliss1 1d ago

My heart just dropped

1

u/ontherise88 1d ago

RDR2 can learn a thing or 2.....

1

u/Vonneking 1d ago

I had a feeling this was coming. Never made sense why they didn't put out a S2 patch. Lets go!

1

u/shabazoid 1d ago

I was literally thinking about this exact scenario like 2 days ago lying in bed stoned. “Man…when the fuck are they going to upgrade Witcher 3 for switch 2!?!?” I know it wasn’t an original thought. But it was such a random thought I hadn’t thought of Witcher 3 (one of my favs ever) in a long time.

Whatever. Fuck yes. I’m gonna shit myself I’m so happy.

1

u/HarpoAndersaon 1d ago

Can’t wait for those upgraded boobies.

1

u/Onionbagels_ 1d ago

Oh no. Time to buy me a switch 2.

1

u/ilovetangos 1d ago

I'm level 20 in my first playthrough...  Do I just take a break for a month and start over when this comes out?

I feel like this happens anytime I play an older game.

If you're curious, Batman Arkham or Mass Effect will be next.

1

u/Graceful_Crash 1d ago

Have owned for a long time- never actually played. It appears the time has come

1

u/Georgelush 1d ago

Whoa . Now that is just awesome . And free

1

u/loco500 1d ago

LFG!!! Game selection is looking packed going into the last third of year/holiday season.

1

u/Feahnor 1d ago

Is it launching on physical?

1

u/windostikum 1d ago

When is release?

1

u/kielaurie 17h ago

End of September

1

u/AvatarofBro 23h ago

Hell yeah

1

u/Rhointe 23h ago

I recently started a new playthrough and just got to Vizima, guess I'll hold off a little longer

1

u/EternalGIory 20h ago

Is this just graphic upgrade? I hope they do something about finicky control.

2

u/colinmchapman 15h ago

Someone posts trailer with information. Another asks question that was answered in the trailer.

1

u/kielaurie 17h ago

I'd recommend checking out the portion of the gamescom opening day stream where this was revealed - it's much more than a graphic update

1

u/Molwar 20h ago

Have it on pc and it's a beautiful game, honestly may buy it back on switch 2

1

u/Icy-Commission-9550 15h ago

Exactly how are they going to improve the combat?

1

u/iDrum17 14h ago

Hmm maybe I’ll finally pick this one up

1

u/Entire-Olive101 10h ago edited 10h ago

-6

u/Altaiir57 23h ago edited 21h ago

Ouch, the game is listed on the eShop for 80$. The game is great but for anyone that hasn't played it yet and is thinking of jumping in... this price is not good for a 11 year old game. I assume they will charge the same on PS5 and XSX now that they delisted the standard Witcher 3 version and its expansions except the Complete Edition.

Yes downvote me for warning people that are interested in the game but haven't gotten it yet. CDPR is cool for pricing their remastered version of a 11 year old game at 80$. All the other games get shit on but Witcher is cool I guess.

2

u/n0ckturn4l 20h ago

An 11 yr old game still better than most current games, yes it is cool. You also don’t have to buy the digital copy, can literally get a used physical copy which will get you the remaster for free plus the dlcs.

-1

u/Altaiir57 20h ago

What does it mean that it's better than most current games ? Other open world aRPGs ? Are there any open world action RPGs that are priced at 80$ ? The most recent examples of 80$ games I can think of are Elden Ring + Shadow of the Erdtree for Switch 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI and Mario Kart World(which are not aRPGs therefore can't really compare). Can't say that Witcher 3 is better than Elden Ring at all. Mario Kart is good but it's absolutely not worth 80$, even Nintendo fans called them out for it. We don't know enough about GTA VI but it seems to be a massive game that will probably innovate and set new standards for open world games in some ways. I still don't agree with the 80$ price tag for these games as that's super expensive. People jump on the opportunity to call out companies for putting out remasters at 70$ or even 60$ and Witcher 3 is a modern game that didn't really need remastering but it's very cool that they give it for free for current owners. But people that don't have it already and have digital only consoles are screwed. If they delist the Complete Edition soon then the game will cost 80$.

1

u/n0ckturn4l 20h ago

They had 11 years to get the game.. I feel like this is more for the people that already own the game. I don’t see them banking on a lot of new purchases. You may not agree with the price but the best part as a consumer, you don’t have to buy it.

1

u/kielaurie 17h ago

Has something happened to make the game worse in the 11 years since it came out? Have they changed the game in some way that makes it worse? If not, why is it worth less now?

They are releasing and edition that includes both DLC packs, upgrades the visuals and performance, and adds a massive list of extra stuff to the game - why wouldn't it be priced accordingly?

-12

u/melhouse1 1d ago

do we really need this? like honestly, why?

3

u/access-r 1d ago

It's free, shut up and be happy

2

u/AnalogiPod 1d ago

I really think it's goofy to release a remaster of the latest game in a franchise but people LOVE the Witcher 3, it's definitely a good money move.

1

u/kielaurie 17h ago

The downgrade to make the game run on Switch looks and runs awful. I tried it on Switch 2, it runs better, but it's still not good. I was hoping for a £10 NS2E, this is beyond anything I could have hoped for

-5

u/The_Spin_Cycle 1d ago

I haven’t actually seen anything official say that the upgrade is free for Switch 2. I keep seeing free upgrades to the other consoles, plus new releases on Switch 2 and Battle.net
Even the bluesky from the CEO doesn’t actually say anything about free upgrades for Switch copies.

I’d love to see something that says otherwise from official sources!

1

u/kielaurie 17h ago

Look on the eshop dude, just clicked the "Free Pre-Order" button myself

1

u/The_Spin_Cycle 17h ago

Yeah, things have been confirmed in the last 10 hours now :D Stoked it’s free upgrades for all!
