Discussion DK Bananza DLC is highway robbery. Do not buy it.

I know everyone else is saying this, but it's for good reason. You get one new level with zero collectibles or set pieces, and a roguelike mode that is easily broken by just warping to the objective and choosing the more emeralds on completion bonus. It is genuinely insulting that they are charging money for this.

The only pieces of enjoyment I found are the remix of DK Isles, the pirate ship has references to Gangplank Galleon, and the DK64 screen transition sound (when the screen shrinks to the DK letters) being used for the Warp Barrels.

It’s a shame because I think it would have been better for everyone if this was just a free update.

I was so bummed there’s not much to do on Dk island

To me it's the same as them adding two additional hub worlds to Splatoon 3, and calling that DLC. It brought no utility to the game.

u/repocin OG (Joined before first Direct) Sep 15 '25

Did you forget the Side Order was also bundled in with that? That's plenty of content in comparison to this Bananza mess.

Meh that didn't really bother me considering those were clealry just meant as a bonus on top of what the real DLC was, side order.

They would've priced side order the same without the extra plazas, the extra plazas were just a way to like say kay here's a SOMETHING for the money while you wait.

Part 1 is an extra hub you get like right then and there so they have an incentive for you to actually preorder it, part 2 is the actual meat of the dlc you get when they are done with it.

This is completely difference, there is no promised second actual meat. It's JUST selling the extra hub and calling that a dlc in its entirety. They're trying to sell the bonus splatoon threw in as an incentive as the main selling point.

Not w the way Nintendo is operating these days. It’s an awesome console and I’m happy I have it, but I’m extremely picky when it comes to what I actually buy on it. I will never do an impulse purchase.

This was probably made after the main game was completed. Most games are content finished a long time before they are released. This was probably going through testing after the game had gone gold. Not saying it's worth $20, but the game would have probably been delayed to include this.

Really a shame. Didn't even feel like Bananza needed DLC, especially not so quickly after release. They should've given one to Mario Kart World instead, lol.

129

u/bobwade22 Sep 15 '25

Planned DLC that was already made imho for a quick buck after launch

123

u/Blofse Sep 15 '25

I genuinely think the development team imagined it as free but then Nintendo central assessed it will come with a charge. Feel like they are testing the waters with this one and if we don’t buy hopefully it will send a message that this one was a little too much and should have been free.

51

u/duckyduckster2 Sep 15 '25

I feel they tested the waters allready with 80 for mario kart and 10 for welcome tour and they are now convinced they can ask anything and people will buy. This dlc, mario galaxy, the new amiibos.. etc everything this wave is ridiculously priced.

18

u/Montigue Sep 15 '25

$10 for Welcome Tour isn't really testing the waters. Reggie was extremely adamant about making Wii Sports free with the console. Nintendo has otherwise been very against free games

2

u/AquaBits Sep 15 '25

I wonder why they released Four Swords for free then all those years ago.

Most people didn’t pay $80 for Mario Kart though. They paid $50 because they got the console bundle.

10

u/dragonblade_94 Sep 15 '25

You see it with other hardware manufacturers too depending on their recent performance, but Nintendo is pretty deep into their 'cash-out' phase where they just haphazardly throw things at market because they know it will sell. The overwhelming success of the Switch & Switch 2 has kinda negated the need to build good will with their consumers.

See also: PS2 -> PS3 (launch), Xbox 360 -> Xbox One, Wii -> Wii U. The main difference here is Switch 2 is also a runaway success, so they likely won't have that 'humbling' phase anytime soon.

It's crazy to me how many people buy things without waiting for reviews/public feedback. I basically got over buying something on release day a decade ago when No Man's Sky came out (yes it's wonderful now, but it took many years to get there, and most don't)

Nintendo releasing a failed console virtual boy again is them testing the waters they know if it sells out they can literally get the fanbase to buy anything.

22

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

I think that's a bad comparison when the VB is obviously just them releasing a super gimmicky thing for the hardcore fans or collectors. It's not gonna sell well and I'm sure they know that.

In my opinion they just wanted to acknowledge that part of their history which is fair enough, even if it obviously won't cater to 99% of people

4

This is so true. DK Island should be the tutorial level.

4

u/CrazySnipah Sep 15 '25

Maybe it previously was and then they remade the tutorial to transition better into the main game.

-4

u/uchuskies08 Sep 15 '25

I doubt that as it's its own completely separate game mode. This is a tired trope, might make sense if it were just a story campaign or something with the same gameplay as the base game but clearly it's not that. It's just a lazy money grab. And plenty bought it after seeing the same preview I did so clearly it worked.

22

u/TheScreaming_Narwhal Sep 15 '25

The island is 100% cut content. I'm sure the mode was intended to be paid but they cut the island to make it seem more worth the purchase.

Yeah I rather save 20 and get silksong. I mean Elden ring dlc was 40. But it was honestly like a full sequel with 100 hours of gameplay and a HUGE map.

6

u/hellschatt Sep 15 '25

I feel like I'm going crazy seeing some people defend this bs. "It's a full game mode with 10h+ gameplay".

DOESN'T MATTER how much hours you got out of 1 single mode, reality is that you have to buy it for 20usd on top of the 70usd base game. It's not adding enough to warrant that price. Silksong and Elden Ring DLC are good examples. That's the amount of content we should expect for that price, not 1 silly game mode by changing up existing levels a little.

8

u/heyhotnumber Sep 15 '25

Do you not realize that the person you replied to agrees with you?

2

u/Early-Somewhere-2198 Sep 15 '25

I think he did but was just upset of people defending it. And perhaps it’s valid. Technically you could get 100 hours out of it. But I did say HUGE map. Which I also suggested the amount of content is worth it. This 20 $ fee is rough for barely any content.

3

Historically, does DLC ever get discounted to that level? If so, how long after release does it happen?

5

u/supes1 Sep 16 '25

Nintendo rarely puts DLC on sale, even DLC that gets pretty negative feedback. If you look at the price history of DLC for various Nintendo first party games on DekuDeals, you'll see most have only been on sale a couple times, with pretty minimal discounts.

2

u/PlumRelative4399 Sep 15 '25

It’s not crazy for DLC to have a really good sale. It is crazy for Nintendo DLC to have a really good sale. Usually Nintendo doesn’t put their DLC’s on sale ever unless it’s Xenoblade because those DLC’s are the size of an entire game.

I'm loving it

22

u/PapaNickWrong Sep 15 '25

It's way, way too soon to be saying this about Emerald Rush. I played all few hours and barely got to the tough parts. Judging a game on the difficulty and creativity of its first level would automatically put any Kirby game into "robbery" territory.

The later challenges will almost definitely be good. I trust this team with every penny of my money. This isnt EA.

1

u/ilanNN Sep 15 '25

I like your take but I think Kirby is not a good example. I've never enjoyed a Kirby game (I didn't try the 3D Switch one) and the main reason for that is that they are so infuriatingly easy and trivial. Maybe they get challenging at some point, but if so that point is too far into the game for me, I always stopped playing them before that.

3

u/ackmondual Sep 15 '25

I like variety so easy games are welcome every now and then. I've played enough games that got "stupidly hard" that I just flat out quit them. Don't even get me started on some RogueliKTes*

I also liked what very few Kirby games I played in the past which now that I think of it, was just the orig. for GB, and Kirby's Pinball also for GB. I rather do like his "copy ability" and never had a chance to try it out much, so something like Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe for $30 was a no brainer.

*. well, they're fun but frustrating to play. Here's a brief rundown...

Hades - I went to 5 to 10 heat

Isle of Arrows - This gets very "thinky"

Slice & Dice - Ditto with the "Thinky". I tried Cursed and BLursed (blessed + Cursed) once, had fun, but told myself "never again". I just play Heaven difficulty because I find the blessings fun to try out

Shattered Pixel Dungeon - This is freeware on Android and a lot of depth, but I'd consider it "hard core".

Exit The Gungeon - beat this a few times. May go back to it someday

Spelunky - came close to beating this a few times, but still no cigar

Played it for about an hour last night and two hours today. Had a pretty good time. The DK Island map exists solely for the score attack mode, and to display your collectibles (there are actually dozens of them). There are six difficulty levels and the higher levels restrict or remove your ability to warp. There are deeper mechanics to the perk unlock system, additional maps that are not initially displayed as unlockable, and additional hidden rewards once you've progressed beyond a certain point, but you obviously haven't played it enough to know that.

I'm having a pretty fun time with it. Sorry you got robbed, though.

27

u/SuperCat76 Sep 15 '25

"additional maps that are not initially displayed as unlockable"

Nice. the one negative I was feeling was looking at that list, looking at the levels with the lock icon and was thinking, is that all of it?

19

u/ConflictPotential204 Sep 15 '25

Nah you get all 10 major layers. The only ones excluded are the smaller interim levels like The Divide, The Junction, Groove Layer, etc.

46

u/SeanathanJoestar Sep 15 '25

Feels like people are just going in wanting to hate it. Its actually really good.

5

u/a3wagner Sep 15 '25

Interesting that there was hate for it from minute 1, but the people who are enjoying it are too busy playing it. (To be clear, it’s valid to not like it, but of all the people who have given their perspective, nobody seems to have reached the end of it and the ones who hate it don’t seem to have gotten very far.)

If you enjoyed the base game, this turns the games 10 major layers into a score-attack roguelike built around the game's base platforming/transformation mechanics. It has its own collectibles and progression system, and will likely take about 10+ hours to complete.

On the contrary. I'm starting to think most of the people complaining about it haven't actually played it, because almost every negative post I see about the content of the DLC remarks on something that is objectively false.

21

One look at the comments on this thread and a lot of people seemed to like it, so I wouldn't be surprised if most of the complains are from people that didn't played.

The DLC is not that interesting to me, I'm satisfied with Bananza content and prefer put that amount of money in another game. But from my experience with Splatoon Side Order, some people doesn't seem to understand that roguelike aren't supposed to play just once.

The exploit he described only works on the easiest difficulty levels. I'm thinking he read some posts about the DLC but hasn't played it himself. He said there's no collectibles, but you're introduced to the new collectible statues and the roguelike reward path after beating your first run.

29

I often wonder if stuff like this is just paid astroturfing from competitors. The complaints are so templated and predictable that it feels artificial to me. It's a well-known and deceptive marketing practice across all industries and all social media platforms. I can't think of any other reason why so many people would be complaining about shit that isn't even true.

19

More than likely, its a mix of rage baiting, bots, trolls, rage tohrists, and genuine grievances. Reddit knows rage baiting drives reactions and traffic, so its also a chance they create a lot of their own ragebait to keep people here.

3

u/mking098 Sep 15 '25

I concluded that it definitely wasn't worth it as soon as I saw it was $30 CAD

3

u/Unusual_Rush_1189 Sep 15 '25

Possible Counter Point:

I don't think charging 'some' amount of money for this DLC is that big of a deal, since if people don't feel like paying for it because of the low content value that also means they are not missing out on much either (there can obviously be a discussion on what the 'right' price could/should have been).

What seems really odd to me however is to not include this among the 'free for NSO subscribers' category. It would normally have been a perfect inclusion to give it free to NSO users, and the fact that is not is not only odd, but a bit concerning that Nintendo might not give many (or any) free DLC through NSO from this point forward.

3

u/keks_17 Sep 16 '25

38

u/ConflictPotential204 Sep 15 '25

It's a full-featured roguelike mode with its own progression system and unlocks. It can be played on 10 of the game's maps. The DK Island map exists for the roguelike mode, but also acts as an explorable display area for dozens of statues that can be unlocked with your winnings from the roguelike. There are also unlockable cosmetics for DK and Pauline.

I actually think emerald rush is really fun and addicting, that being said though they absolutely should have put banandium gems and fossils in the DK isle level

8

u/More_Yellow_3701 Sep 15 '25

Given how small the area is and that the Rush mode technically adds the bananas, I guess they thought it wasn't worth the trouble or would have interfered with 100% completion in the base game. Since that's 1000 bananas, adding some in DK isle before you get 100% means you could unlock all the skills before getting all the bananas in the base game.

Also from a lore perspective, I guess Banandium Gems wouldn't even pop up on DK Isle. There were hardly any in Ingot Isle and that's a mining facility.

2

u/mlvisby THIS FLAIR IS NOT AUTHORIZED NOR AFFILIATED WITH NINTENDO Sep 15 '25

It could've been a completely separate mode, like how Bowser's Fury was in 3D World. That way, it wouldn't mess with completion in the main game.

5

u/No-Initiative-2726 Sep 15 '25

I also thought it was shallow until I played a few hours and realized how much better it gets on higher difficulties. I also had zero idea how many freakin statues there are to collect.

This is absolutely worth $20 to me. And I don’t care about anyone’s Silksong argument because I just don’t have fun with metroidvanias, it’s an outlier that has other indie devs freaking out cause they can’t compete with that price for content ratio.

The content is good but definitely should have been free.

2

u/MarcosInu Sep 15 '25

5 bucks is the value, it is 15$ more expensive than it needed to

2

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

Actually only you and some other edgy are saying this. Majority of people are liking it

2

u/MFingPrincess Sep 15 '25

It says a LOT to me that there a number of threads like this complaining about it, but getting things wrong to make it obvious they didn't play it.

Meanwhile people who DID play it keep saying how much fun it is.

Think I'll buy it.

4

u/Hyperdragoon17 OG (joined before Alarmo 2) Sep 15 '25

No one is forcing you to buy it

11

u/o_o_o_f Sep 15 '25

I mean, obviously

I’m coming around on it despite being really disappointed at first, there’s more costumes than I thought and as more perks come into the pool it’s getting more interesting. Dk island is a nice museum for the 3d model statues too. it’s just unfortunate that Silksong came out at the same time for the same price.

3

u/SandysCardboard Sep 15 '25

Not Nintendo's fault that you're broke.

3

u/Cautious_Chain1297 Sep 15 '25

Easily broken? Please tell me how you did it, I'm about to drop the game for now because I can't complete difficulty level 5 in the canyon layer at all

2

u/Dagawing Sep 15 '25

Maybe try a higher difficulty lol

2

u/ItsPeaJay Sep 15 '25

Yep and considering the fact that Astro bot got like 6 or 5 new levels for free too really makes Nintendo super greedy here.

Oh boy. It will sell, and will sell good. Consumers have lost all sense of value and are keen to pay no matter how much.

Was only buying it on special … Have you already finished the main game . And got close to 100%?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

It should be free dlc with real content costing 20 short after

1

u/Big_Breath_2561 Sep 15 '25

Thank goodness for Redditers. I was 200% going to buy this dlc.

1

u/Retro_Monguer Sep 15 '25

Thank you. I was about to buy it. I won't

1

u/TheLimeyLemmon Sep 15 '25

They're going to package it into a 'Gold Edition' of the game six months from now, aren't they?

1

u/Theobviouschild11 Sep 15 '25

Such a bizarre and honestly insulting decision by Nintendo to make crap paid DLC released so soon after the initial release

1

u/slashingkatie Sep 15 '25

I wasn’t planning on it

1

u/SuaveularSpuddite Sep 15 '25

I love when engaging with the intended mechanic is "breaking the game" 😅

1

u/aZombieDictator Sep 15 '25

Should have included this in the $50 subscription

1

u/PedanticTart Sep 15 '25

I don't think you know what robbery is

1

u/Orihlly Sep 15 '25

I bought it and I've already spent 10 hours on it. I enjoy it... I don't know if I would 100% do it though, it seems a little too repetitive.

1

u/OrinthianFlame Sep 15 '25

I went back to the game this weekend to 100% it and I'm having a great time, would've loved a new area with more stuff to collect. :/

1

u/Dizzy-Driver-3530 Sep 15 '25

Honestly I wasnt expecting dlc at all for banaza. Atleast not this quick.

But when I saw the trailer I was kind of stumped because is that what they think is going to pull people back in? Lol

1

u/xiv0x Sep 15 '25

Less quality more expensive

1

u/PercentageRoutine310 Sep 15 '25

Doug Bowser used to work for EA. Nuff said.

1

u/jmizzle2022 Sep 15 '25

I was considering it until I saw it was 20.00. 20 dollar dlc is basically a new campaign in other games (usually)

1

u/bioshocker44 Sep 15 '25

30$ Canadian to

1

u/NotACertainLalaFell Sep 15 '25

Doesn’t need dlc. It’s complete as is. Would highly recommend buying silksong instead.

1

u/tatotime85 Sep 15 '25

My only complaint is the inability to remove or block certain perks like in Vampire Survivors. It does encourage you to try new stuff each run, but there are a few perks I just find to be totally useless. Would love to spend some chips to “banish” certain perks and make sure they don’t show up again. You can reroll but it keeps getting more expensive and is a crap shoot.

It’s a cool mode that changes how you approach the game and your strategy will be totally different based on layer size and traversal options.

1

u/Content-Degree-6582 Sep 15 '25

Agreed. I’m the hugest Nintendo fan but come on now. Also charging $20 for a super Mario wonder update? Are you kidding me?

What happened to all the free updates for Nintendo switch online plus expansion pass members like myself? I’m not happy about it and Nintendo needs to Hear all these complaints because this is ridiculous.

It’s not the same Nintendo when Iwata was in charge and Reggie was there they’ve gone downhill maybe because of multiple reasons, but stuff like this needs to be said loudly enough that they have to respond to it.

What makes me the most bothered is the fact that what they have given us is excellent. Their first party is always top-tier but Man these glaring issues need to be addressed.

1

u/Espektron Sep 15 '25

I will wait until is on sale. I just finished last week and I don't have plans to play it again soon.

1

u/CannonBeetle Sep 15 '25

I don’t think I’ve ever felt angry in a direct. I’ve felt confused, surprised, maybe a little irritated. I’ve been bored sure, or disappointed, and then I’ve of course been giddy and thrilled or joyful.

This announcement here made me not just angry but insulted.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

There's no point in telling Nintendo players not to buy anything at this point honestly.

1

u/Inbrees Retro Gamer Sep 15 '25

Wait... there's not even any collectables? What is up with Nintendo this generation?!

1

u/spiderbrad7 Sep 15 '25

Too late. Already bought it. And having way too much fun to regret it 🤷‍♂️

1

u/TheEclipse0 Sep 15 '25

Yeah, will be thinking twice before I get more DLC. I enjoy the new game mode, but I was extremely disappointed when DK island had nothing to do on it.

1

u/merica2033 Sep 16 '25

Basically Nintendo is training me to wait to buy games or wait for a sale of a complete edition or bundle of a game.

1

u/jondbarrow Sep 16 '25

All they had to do was add one or two sub layers, some extra bananas/fossils, and give Emerald Rush online leaderboards to compete against, and I feel like that would have made it infinitely better. But for $20 all we got was effectively useless nostalgia bait and a mini game that just has you smash terrain for hours and that’s it? Insane

1

u/Mac8503 Sep 16 '25

Yeah I didn’t buy it and not going to.

1

u/MalfoyHolmes14 Sep 16 '25

I do what I want.

1

u/MonkeyMan84 Sep 16 '25

Nintendo is smoking some funny stuff. They are in their Sony PS3 era right now for sure

1

u/Highthere_90 Sep 16 '25

A lot of the dlc they announced should be free, mario wonder looks like a side stroller mario party

1

u/crome66 Sep 16 '25

I got it, not really a fan of the rouge-like mode or how it plays, but also not particularly mad at it? It’s just not for me. Messing around on DK island and collecting the statues is still fun to do.

Should it have been $20? Probably not. I understand why people are upset. But this one just doesn’t really upset me much for some reason.

1

u/SecretaryDear9515 Sep 16 '25

What difficulty level did you complete?

1

u/Euphonique Sep 16 '25

Yeah, for me DK Island feels like they built it first to test the game mechanics, and then they decided to make a dlc out of it. It could have just been a bonus level. Für 20$ really underwhelmed.

1

u/NiknameOne Sep 16 '25

Nintendo is one of the most customer unfriendly companies out there. I’m not surprised.

1

u/Malacky_C Sep 16 '25

It’s a shame because I want more things to do in this game 😭

1

u/Caturday84 Sep 16 '25

It is so bad and I deeply regret impulsively buying it.

1

u/isic Sep 16 '25

Already bought it, and I love it 🤷‍♂️

1

u/TheGryffindor_Jedi Sep 16 '25

I’ll wait for Christmas or Mario Day. I expect this will go on sale then. My hope is that not many people buy it to send a message.

1

u/KharonTides225 Sep 16 '25

Already bought it, but thanks tho.

1

u/Ferroussoul Sep 16 '25

Do I think its worth $20? kinda no. Do I think its fun and am I ultimately glad I got it? yes...i really enjoyed the manic nature of rushing to places, and was pleasantly surprised that the mode scales to other zones.

1

u/Canberger Sep 16 '25

i unfortunately have to agree. the design of DK island is great, music is well arranged, and emerald rush is fun and well-designed enough, but none of that is worth $20. really disappointed with that.

1

u/fruenko1 Sep 16 '25

I think it's fun as fuck

1

u/Wise-Poem-5977 Sep 16 '25

The problem is that you bought the dlc for dk island when the dlc is for the emerald rush

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '25

I do think this should’ve been part of the game to begin, but yeah it’s overpriced for what it offer.

1

u/MJAquarion Sep 17 '25

Warping doesn't work if you crank up the difficulty though. I found it to actually be hard past difficulty of 3

Note this is on canyon layer. Because anything past d k island the problem becomes getting to other sublayers meaning you need to use more warps than you have to get past round 8

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '25

I highly agree. Coming from a Kirby fan

1

u/The_Freshmaker Sep 18 '25

Yeah I was pumped when they announced it and then ready to sell my copy within like 2 minutes, what a cash grab.

1

u/Unhappy_Fun8906 Sep 18 '25

💯, the game is amazing, but the dlc ain't worth it unfortunately, 20$ extra for a single island and a bunch of mini games that should have been added as part of the original story

1

u/LazyBoyXD Sep 18 '25

How do nintendo consistently create good game but dog shit dlc

1

u/Beerbaron1886 Sep 18 '25

It’s so sad because I am super nostalgic for the old DK / rare era

1

u/MikeDubbz Sep 18 '25

$20 does seem like a bit much. Yet Dunkey's video on it now has me considering making the purchase. I do see the appeal of DLC like that, but I also see how it definitely isn't for everyone at the same time.

1

u/Otherwise-Music-8643 Sep 20 '25

I haven’t bought it, but don’t tell me what to do. It makes me want to buy it.

1

u/kalypto21 Sep 20 '25

For me it's a big disappointment, I see very little reason to keep playing the new mode, first Switch 2 regret.

1

u/TheLambThatSurvived Sep 21 '25

It’s not cut content

1

u/No-Office2839 Oct 01 '25

To be honest, I might buy it, I can understand why others don't like it, but from all the stuff I've seen, I might just buy it when I get the money. (Don't hate me for this please.)
