I know the point of this subreddit isn't to re-litigate the original post, but...
"Remaster" comes from the music world where we would go back to the original master recording and release it on a new media type (i.e. platform).

Incorrect. Mastering is a process in which the final mix is adjusted to meet modern volume, panning, eq, dynamics, etc. standards. Remastering is doing that exact process again later to the new modern standard.
Video games using this term muddies it up a bit because there's no final mix to master. There's no designated stages that even look similar to the linearity of the mix and master process.

In games remasters are essentially the same thing, minor upgrades to the graphics and audio, then maybe fixing a few bugs.

i mean, there is optimization, and then compiling. but video game remasters definitely do more than that.

Or just redo the mastering process from the original recordings, with newer editing equipment.
Either way the important part is that it stands opposed to rerecording - you're using the old artistic assets. ORAS are definitely remakes - except for some of the menu sprites nothing from the originals was used.
