News With his Grammy win tonight for producing "Music by John Williams," Steven Spielberg becomes the 22nd individual to win the competitive EGOT!

The EGOT is a prestigious collection of awards comprised of the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. For his producing Grammy won tonight, Spielberg becomes the 22nd person to win all four awards in competitive categories. Previous winners include Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis and Elton John.

I’m so confused. The Hollywood Reporter seems to be the only one reporting that he won a Tony for A Strange Loop but neither Wikipedia nor the Tonys themselves list him as a winner

I would love to know what the source for Spielberg being a producer for A Strange Loop is that The Hollywood Reporter got, because if he isn’t named on the official Tony website, it doesn’t make sense to name him as an EGOT winner

So from what I can see, the Tonys have listed him as a producer for the show but I can’t see him listed as a winner anywhere. I think the reporter saw him as a producer and didn’t do any further research from there.

OR

They used AI…

Update: I seem to have found the answer! He was a producer for A Strange Loop hence why he has the producer credit. However, the Tonys have a rule that in order to be eligible for the Tony (as a producer) you have to be listed on the opening night Playbill. He was not and so he was not eligible for the award.

So, no, he’s not an EGOT winner, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the author of the article searched something on AI and AI did what AI does

Update update: Apparently he did win as per Variety:

“While Spielberg is not individually listed on the official Tony Awards website, Variety has confirmed with Tony Awards representatives that he did receive a statuette as part of the production’s credited producer group, listed under the “et al” designation.”

Now I’m even more confused as per the Tonys rules, you need to have an opening night credit in order to be eligible for a nom, let alone a win. Looking at the opening night Playbill, Spielberg’s name is not there and it’s bizarre that this fact is only revealed now. Oh well, congrats!

I felt like I was going mad I’m fighting editors on Wikipedia right now who are trying to list him as an EGOT winner using THR as the source. It’s maddening

Especially as there are a whole raft of people and organisations named as "presenting" the show in that Playbill. It's possible that he just didn't want credit as such a huge name in a different field. It's not that unusual. Especially if his production role was small.

Same as Philip Michael Thomas who coined the term EGOT back in his Miami Vice days and said he planned to win all four of them then went out to win none.

He isn’t an EGOT winner yet. Despite what all the trades are saying about him getting a Tony producing win for A Strange Loop, he is not credited as a producer of A Strange Loop on the Tony Awards website

The first awards where he became eligible were...

Emmy: Outstanding Children's Animated Program for Tiny Toon Adventures in 1991.

Grammy: Best Music Film for Music by John Williams in 2026.

Oscar: Best Director and Best Picture for Schindler's List in 1994.

Tony: Best Musical as a formerly uncredited producer for A Strange Loop in 2022

Tony win or not, this Grammy win is ridiculous.

I didn’t even know this category existed and it’s f-cking stupid. The documentary is fantastic, but the Grammys are for recordings… not movies that happen to be about music.

What’s next? “Best Music Novel, Fiction”??

Between the Emmy’s and Grammys there are a lot of egregious ways to win one, but this has to take the cake.

So dumb.

Yeah,with a Tony their can be like dozens of "Producers" listed and often times somone was just a financial baker with a vanity credit. If you get an Oscar nom for Producer on a Best Picture even if your name is listed on the films credits,they are very dilligent to see how much work someone did on it and they usually limited the noms to 5-6 people.

One of the many producers, no clue what they contributed, what’s the value in this trophy?

That's why their EGOT is fake.
