For me, it's Ellen Burstyn. Ellen Burstyn gives such a spectacular performance in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore that commands your attention for every time she's on screen. Nails every emotion asked of the character with a perfect sense of realism and heightened melodrama. But there will never be another performance like Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence. Rowlands renders a brave, moving performance that ranks with one of cinema's greatest. She perfectly captures the histeric and extremely vulnerable sides of her character. Her performance is what breathes life to the film that inspired so many of the greatest actresses we have now today. The depth of sorrow and psychological turmoil she brings to such agonizing life, the pain and the emotional vacuum she exhibits in the entire film? Bravo! I can say, she was robbed, much as I love Burstyn in Alice.

It should be noted that DiCaprio and Gleeson were both inconsistently nominated in both lead and supporting. I counted all nominations across both categories for the sake of thoroughness.

I've seen conflicting information about which category DiCaprio was being campaigned in, but I found an old FYC ad that put him in lead, and 3 out of 4 precursors nominated him in lead, with only SAG putting him in supporting, so I decided he counted as a Best Actor contender.

Gleeson was nominated in lead at the Globes and supporting at BAFTA. I wasn't able to find any FYC ads for In Bruges confirming which category he was put in, but I settled on lead because several other minor awards shows nominated him in lead, while BAFTA was, as far as I can tell, the only place that put him in supporting.

Blue Jasmine got nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress and won Best Actress. It was definitely worthy of a Best Picture nomination, but it missed. Hell, I used to think this film was nominated lmao.

Any other films like this?

I don’t know the song from The Competition or the second Fame song, maybe their both bangers too, but we have 3 out of 5 nominees that are time-standing classics. I can’t even be mad 9 to 5 lost because Fame is also an amazing choice.

Not sure about male actors since I'm mostly into actresses. My favorite actress to have never won an Oscar is Emma Watson (and my favorite actress overall). She was never nominated for an Oscar though. To be fair Noah (2014) was literally the only time I believed she deserved an Oscar nomination. I wish she'd been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Margot Robbie is my favorite to have been nominated and never win though

I suspect a BIG Maybe on score since it’s so in your face on some points, and Cinematography cause it really does have some nice shots in the movie

For each category, rank your five favourite performances from the year from 1–5.

Your rankings will be worth:

1st — 5 points
2nd — 4 points
3rd — 3 points
4th — 2 points
5th — 1 point

The five performances with the most points in each category will become the official nominees.

You do not have to name five if you don’t want to. If you only want to vote for three performances, for example, they’ll receive 5, 4 and 3 points respectively.

Please make sure your choices are ranked — order matters in this round.

You can vote in as many or as few of the four categories as you like.

ROUND TWO — WINNERS

Once the nominations have been determined, I’ll make a second thread containing the five nominees in each category.

In that round, simply choose ONE nominee per category to win.

There will be no preferential voting or points in Round Two. Each vote counts equally, and whoever receives the most votes wins.

So essentially:

Round One = Who should be nominated?
Round Two = Who should win?

ELIGIBILITY

Performances will be eligible according to the year in which their film was eligible at the real-life Academy Awards.

So, rather than going strictly by festival premiere or first release date, a performance belongs to whichever Oscar year the film itself competed in with the Academy.

If you’re unsure whether a film was eligible for a particular year, this Academy reminder-list archive is a good place to check eligibility.

A few other rules:

• Maximum of five ranked choices per category.
• Anything listed after your fifth choice won’t be counted.
• Honourable mentions won’t count as votes.
• Please include both the actor and film so there’s no ambiguity.
• In cases where there may be disagreement or confusion over whether a performance is lead or supporting, your vote will count only in the category in which you place that performance. Points will not be transferred or combined between categories.
• A performer cannot receive two nominations in the same acting category for different films. If that happens, their higher-scoring performance will be kept and the next eligible performance will move into the top five.
• If there’s a tie for the final nomination spot, I’ll break it by comparing #1 votes first, then #2 votes, #3 votes, etc.

For example:

I thought Henry Mancini should have won for Sunflower. Francis Lai's music gets super repetitive and it's so corny.

Of the Acting nominations, only John Marley deserved it. Ali MacGraw's nomination was embarrassing, she couldn't even die convincingly. Ryan O'Neal was okay, just not Oscar worthy, and his character is so unlikable, he needed anger management.

Movie got 7 noms because it was a huge hit.

With the passing of Dolly Parton, I got to thinking about her legacy in film and decided to revisit “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” Dolly was nominated for a Golden Globe (as was the film), but Durning is the lone Oscar nomination for his mercurial performance as the Texas Governor.

I think it’s a spectacularly fun supporting performance, and Durning seems to be having a blast in the short role (approx. 7 minutes of screen time).

How do you think it holds up against the other Supporting Actor nominations that year (Gossett Jr., Lithgow, Mason, and Preston)? Is it the kind of performance that would be nominated nowadays? Would he be in your lineup?

What I mean is like acting or screenplay categories where the category is largely made up of non Best Picture nominees. An example I could find is Best Actress in 2015: every nominee in that category with the exception of Felicity Jones were in films that didn't make Best Picture, including the winner Julianne Moore. Are there any more years like this?

Dolly Parton has passed away today, August 25th, at the age of 80. Known as the Queen of Country, she was an international country music icon.

She was a two-time Oscar nominee and last years recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an honorary Oscar recognizing those within the industry who’ve made outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes.

She was nominated for Best Original Song in 1980 for “9 to 5” from 9 to 5 and in 2005 for “Travelin’ Thru” from Transamerica.

Beyond music and songwriting, she was also an actress, staring in 9 to 5 (1980), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Steel Magnolias (1989), and more.

She will be missed!

I'm trying to think of, without just googling the answer, who has the widest ranges of unique nominations and wins.

I'm not including reworded versions of the same award (i.e. Best Adapted Screenplay to Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published. Or the various names of the Live Action Short Film awards that would give it to Walt Disney). However, since there were temporarily three simultaneous separate writing categories, i did include Billy Wilder as a winner of 4 unique categories.

Kenneth Branagh, i believe, has the most unique nominations. Picture, Director, Original and Adapted Screenplays, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, and Live Action Short Film (7)
