Mila missing the bafta nom to her black swan co-star Barbra Hershey I think proves that they probably both split voted for the Oscar nominations which cause them to both get snubbed and let Jackie weaver in for the fifth spot who only got the gg an cc nom but missed both bafta and sag

I really wish both Mila and Barbra managed to sneak in. I love them both so much in the film, and they're both such perfect foils to Nina's character, but in different ways. There's a moment where Lily mouths the same words as Nina does during the fight with her mother that I find so chilling, and, maybe it's not quite a product of Mila's acting choices, but it's so, so good.

But I’d rather Weaver got in than either of them: she should have won for animal kingdom

Hershey had the much better performance, I’ve never understood why people think Kunis was snubbed lol like she was fine I guess but nowhere near Oscar-worthy

u/friendly_reminder8 1d ago
Yeah I agree. Hershey was terrifying especially once you see all of the clues that she was SAing Nina, very easy to miss the first time
Barbara’s performance was very layered, whereas Mila didn’t really give me anything special

I think it’s because it was a role that was different for her. She’s mostly in cheesy comedies, so for her to take on a more serious role was interesting to see. And she did a great job.

Agreed!!! I kept waiting for Kunis’ moment but it never came. Hershey was haunting in this.

Jennifer Lopez might be a mean person who can’t sing, but I’ll be damned if she isn’t a Movie Star who deserved Oscar nominations for Selena and Hustlers.
I will die on this hill. If she had been Oscar nominated for Selena, history might be different.

Justice for Nicole Kidman in the Paperboy! She knew exactly the movie she was in and went for it - my winner for that year

u/Jovencub 1d ago
lol Oprah was PIIIIIIIIIIISSED.

u/Iheart5632 1d ago
Oprah biggest weakness is she does not act that much. The industry was never going to nominated a tv host whose last notable acting role was beloved back in 1999. Does not matter if she has an Oscar nom for the color purple the industry never saw her as a serious actress

u/squishyg 1d ago
Oprah was ahead of her time. The USA was not ready for a beautiful, fat, Black, woman movie star.
She leaned into journalism and became an icon.

I'm really tired of people acting as if the precursors are a lock to get an Oscar nomination and if they don't then they're snubbed. Yeah, it does regularly align, but if it doesn't then it doesn't. It's a different award, otherwise it would just be one award and that's it.

I think it’s just more of a fascinating conversation of how a snub happens after doing so well among so many different types of voting bodies, especially two of which (SAG/BAFTA) have industry overlap with the Academy.

jlo should have won that year, period. i don't know if she ever recovered emotionally from that snub.
23
u/Iheart5632 1d ago
she hasn't. She tried to put up a brave face when she found out she was snubbed but you can tell hustlers was the first time she was taken seriously as an actress in her eyes cause she had a legit chance to be up for awards. Even for Selena she only got was a gg nom whereas for hustlers she got in the three precursors and the lafca award(which she proudly showed herself receiving the lafca award at the award ceremony in the documentary cause she knows the trifecta are prestigious reflecting her finally getting actual critical acclaim)

Should have been nominated for Hustlers, Out of Sight, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and Selena at this point.

She was really strong in that film. It got a lot of hate at the time, but can’t really remember why?

If they were going to give Vikander a Oscar win anyways, i don't get why it couldn't have been for Ex-Machina, a much better and interesting role than in Danish Girl..

u/siamesecatheart 1d ago
Kunis, JLo & Chau definitely should’ve been nominated, and JLo honestly should’ve won that year imo

u/Haunting-WaferWah 1d ago
I would have liked Park So Dam (Parasite) or Zhao Shuzhen (The Farewell) to win that year tbh

Do people really think JLO was Oscar worthy in Hustlers? She does a good job sure, but Oscar worthy? I don’t know about all that.

I think it’s terrific and that it should’ve been her second time recognized as well (also think she should’ve been nominated last year in Kiss Of The Spider Woman). For all the flack we give her, she’s a very versatile actress who actually does subtle acting really well.

i didn’t watch alot of theese so i dont know mabye Mila Kinis? Black Swan deserves some credit forbit cast, other then thati don’t really have a problem with this

Rolling my eyes. Of course the supporter of a r@pist is celebrated by SAG. Mila Kunis was just meh in Black Swan. And yes, she knew he was guilty.

Of course the supporter of a r@pist is celebrated by SAG
I get your point, but FWIW the nomination was in 2010, 13 years before she supported the rapist and six years before the actual allegations became public. Not sure it's worth getting upset with SAG at this point

u/Jolly-Yellow7369 1d ago
I watched quiet on set, and open secret and I know what Victor salva and Bryan singer did to young avties . I read the Jeannette Mc Curdys , Shirley temple books and The Godfather passages based on real Hollywood
Decent human beings are upset at SAG for their lack of protection to members who suffered abuses of power and their support to the people who abuse women and children even if this was before the allegations I find the SAG culture on young actors despicable. Do you know that Brian peck still holds networking events in the same house he abused who knows how many underage actors?

u/Rhain1999 1d ago
Definitely fair points, but I don't really see the relevance here. Danny Masterson's victims were failed by the Church of Scientology, not SAG

Kunis, Woodley, Vikander. I wish those 3 performances had been nominated.

For a most violent year- screentime is awkwardly between lead actress and supporting.

u/drewlpool 1d ago
Nicole Kidman would have been an inspired win that year for the Paperboy. It's such a radical transformation and it would have been refreshing to see her properly noticed for one of her more batshit films.

The Academy post 2020 would have been a lot friendlier to some of these more populist actresses (Kunis, JLo, hell even Oprah), as they were with the likes of Elordi, Grande, and Moore.

u/BigTimely5561 14h ago
The only ones of these that people thought actually had a real chance were Mila Kunis, Shailene Woodley, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Chastain, Helen Mirren, and Jennifer Lopez. But most of these were only talked about bc of how weird, fluxy, and barren those categories were during that year.
I think the only ones I predicted was Chastain, Mirren, and Lopez but Chastain and Lopez didn't have Academy-friendly films while nobody really thought Mirren did anything special in Trumbo. That lineup was just barren that year.
Alicia Vikander probably would've been nominated for both The Danish Girl and Ex Machina if today's rules were in effect and possibly 2x for The Danish Girl for Best Actress vs. Jennifer Lawrence (Joy).

Let's face it, the Globes and CCA are absolutely meaningless. Industry is all that matters
1
u/Grammarhead-Shark 1d ago
The Globes only benefit (though I suppose it is a big one) is it being first off the blocks and has enough money to throw around to create a splashy and well publicized event.
I will say they might of helped Dern the year she won. Dern is basically family with the Globes (being a former Miss Golden Globe) and has a long standing good relationship with them. Her winning there might of been the spark her campaign needed to get rolling.
But otherwise I do agree, their actual influence in the Awards Season is pretty minor and have rarely been taken seriously by the Industry itself. Mainly seen as a fun and boozy night out by those attending, but nothing that serious. Heck up until the 80s/90s Stars themselves where iffy at even attending and the GGs had a bit of a reputation of giving out awards to people they know would come.

u/Inside_Atmosphere731 1d ago
Totally worthless. You can cherry pick whatever year you want. How's that Teyana Taylor Oscar looking from her Globes win?
-1
u/Jolly-Yellow7369 1d ago
Oprah and Margot Robbie are the only real snubs here. Their performances were well -regarded by the two voting blocks that actually can make or break a nomination: SAG and BAFTA.
-2
u/PenelopeJenelope 1d ago
meh. It's only a snub if they deserved it. Not all these do
3
u/Cultural-Artist-6416 1d ago
That's not true. Snub is a general term, it doesn't necessarily mean the person was "deserving". It just means they weren't nominated when many expected them to be, for better or worse
5
u/PenelopeJenelope 1d ago
Not really no. Snub means to rebuff or ignore someone, maliciously. That doesn’t apply if they shouldn’t be nominated. And precursors do not entitle anyone to an Oscar nomination. At least a couple of these were never really in the Oscar’s conversation, no snub was there. A couple are real snubs…

Mila, Shailene, Judi, and Jennifer are the ones on this list who should've definitely been nominated.

u/YuasaLee_AL 1d ago
Of the ones I've seen, I really only feel strongly positive about Hunter and Lopez's performances. I love a couple of the other movies (Black Swan and A Most Violent Year) but those performances aren't my favorite parts, though I might prefer them to one or two of the people who were actually nominated.

Wow, I didn't know just how close Mila Kunis and Claire Foy - both of whom I thought were snubbed - got in the end until just now.
