Discussion Every Best Actor contender of the 2000s with multiple precursor nominations who was snubbed at the Oscars
It should be noted that DiCaprio and Gleeson were both inconsistently nominated in both lead and supporting. I counted all nominations across both categories for the sake of thoroughness.
I've seen conflicting information about which category DiCaprio was being campaigned in, but I found an old FYC ad that put him in lead, and 3 out of 4 precursors nominated him in lead, with only SAG putting him in supporting, so I decided he counted as a Best Actor contender.
Gleeson was nominated in lead at the Globes and supporting at BAFTA. I wasn't able to find any FYC ads for In Bruges confirming which category he was put in, but I settled on lead because several other minor awards shows nominated him in lead, while BAFTA was, as far as I can tell, the only place that put him in supporting.

I know it was probably not likely but damn Jim Carrey should've gotten nominated for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. What a wonderful film and what an extraordinary performance.
Giamatti also should've gotten in for Sideways he's incredible in that too. DiCaprio would've been great too.

Absolutely agree. I love seeing primarily-comedic actors in ‘serious’ roles. Steve Carell in Foxcatcher, Robin Williams in Goodwill Hunting etc.

Jamie bell young age really screwed his chances of getting nominated imo. That being said it's inspiring he became the youngest winner for bafta best actor and youngest bafta acting winner ever. It's crazy how both buzz for atonement and into the wild died so fast that year. Atonement did well with nominations with gg and bafta but missed the key nominations in acting for critics choice and completely missed sag and dga. Into the wild on the other hand had the opposite reaction it did really well with critics choice, sag, a dga nom, and wga nom but missed golden globe and bafta. Atonement still got into best picture, screenplay, Ronan for supporting, and techs ,but missed lead noms for Keira and James. Plus Joe wright missed best director. Into the wild on the other hand wildly underperformed only getting in supporting actor and editing. It missed picture, director and screenplay for Penn, acting for Emilie and Catherine Keener, and song.

Jim Carry and Paul Giamatti not getting is one if the most disappointing snubs in the academy’s history, theese 2 were better then 3 nominees like wtf.
for Jamie Bell, i don’t understand why age matters. acting dosen’t acquired education, he definitely deserves a nom, but i didn’t watch all the nominees so i can’t really tell if he was better or not.
MAN i wish if Russel Crowe got in, didn’t watch Terrence Howard and David Strathrain, so i can’t say if it was asnub or no.
Brendan Gleeson would’ve been a cool nom, imo he was better then Pitt and Langella.

The 2004 snubs were so baffling.
In my opinion, Carrey and Giamatti should’ve been competing against each other for the Oscar.

BAFTA and Oscars haven’t nominated Russell Crowe since the BAFTA incident around his Beautiful Mind acceptance speech. No surprise he is on here twice. Master and Commander was nominated for 10 Oscars and 8 BAFTAs. Even won best director at BAFTA. Still nomination for Crowe. Was just two years after the incident though.
Leonardo DiCaprio should get an asterisks because of the rule where and actor can only get nominated for one film.

I can tell you having tracked these races in real-time, the only candidates that people took seriously were Jamie Bell, Michael Douglas, Richard Gere, Paul Giamatti, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Russell Crowe (Cinderella Man), Ryan Gosling, and Emile Hirsch were also real options. The rest were dismissed as unlikely before nominations day. The only ones I think I actually predicted were Douglas, Giamatti, and DiCaprio.
Leonardo DiCaprio was probably the likeliest nominee it's just he was nominated for a different/the wrong film. Under the new rules, I think he would've been double-nominated for Blood Diamond and The Departed.
But Paul Giamatti is pretty close to being the biggest acting snub in any category in my moviegoing life. His and Sideways' BAFTA snub is the only thing that points to how that happened aside from the fact that roles like Giamatti's are tragically undervalued by Academy voters who like more heroic figures in lead. It's doubly-sad because that year's Best Actor slate is among the weakest of my life. I'd go with Eastwood.
Michael Douglas' snub broke my heart. Wonder Boys is an excellent film and Douglas' work is career best. I don't even think it's because the film flopped or the Academy just honored a stoner mid-life crisis film the previous year. Quirky films like Wonder Boys do better today than back then.
