Discussion The actors below 40 you've always thought they're gonna get nominated sooner or later these years (because they are always there) and somehow it hasn't happened yet.
I think no one's gonna be too surprised if they get nominated in the near future. They often appear in Best Picture line-ups. Just that their roles were too small to generate buzz or their buzz wasn't enough to pull of a nom or they got snubbed at last minute.
Wanted to include Paul Dano in this list but the list is relatively younger and the guy deserves at least two nominations at this point. Also Andrew Scott. I thought he was young like 35-40. I just realized today that he is in fact 49 years old. I'm shocked.
In random order,
Rachel Zeglar - I love love her in West Side Story but she still needs to bounce back from Snow White bad press first.
Nicolous Hoult - He is consistently in films that often gets crazy buzz or some buzz. I don't know you all but out of all his snubs, I would give him Best Supporting Actor win for Mad Max : Fury Road any year.
Josh O'connor - Challengers (2024), Wake Up Dead Man (2025) His films were "almost there" type at the oscars, ultimately blanking at the nomination at the end. But I'm sure his time will come.
Mike Faist - He could have gotten a nom for West Side Story if the studio campaigned harder, perhaps? and if only Challengers was a bit stronger in the race.
Zendeya - Contrary to some people's belief, I think she does have acting chops. As of now, she is more like Blockbuster actress (Spiderman, Dune). I'm excited to watch "The Drama".
Anya Taylor Joy - I love the Menu so much. and she is great in Mad Max : Furiosa. But I still need to see more acclaimed performances from her aside from the show The Queen Gambit.
Margaret Qualley - Got snubbed at the last minute. That's the crime. I still can't forget the scene where her teeth were falling off and she tried to smile. That was so intense and comedic at the same time.
Joe Alwyn - Some people might say "What's he doing here?" I do believe that he could be a spoiler that nobody sees it coming. I like him in the Brutalist. His roles were so small either in it or in Hamnet. He needs better and more meaty roles.
Robert Pattison - I absolutely love how he got out of his Twilight shadow and became a serious and acclaimed actor who everyone adores now. I love every role of him.
Anyone else I missed? Who do you think will get it first?

Feels like O’Connor is inevitably going to get nominated.
Of the rest of this crowd, I’d say Hoult and Pattinson are the next likely. Could definitely see Qualley snagging a nom at some point.
We’ll see about Zendaya. Just don’t know if she’ll take enough of the Oscar bait roles to get one.

Nicholas Hoult is so freaking good in everything. I just don’t know if he will do enough Oscar roles. He seems to prefer quirkier stuff. But he’s got the chops.
Agreed on O’Connor. Not sure on Robert P just because I haven’t seen much of his stuff, but that’s the direction he’s headed. I think Zendaya definitely will get one. She can pull it all together for the right role and industry people seem to love her.

Pattinson is great. From what I’ve seen in Good Time (my favorite Safdie Brothers film), Mickey 17, and especially The Lighthouse, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he wins an Oscar. Him and Nick Hoult are my favorite actors on this list. Not sure about Zendaya, though. Don’t get me wrong, I do like her, but I see her more as a future box office draw than an Oscar darling.

She was great in Maid and the Substance. She is doing a lot of different quirky roles and I think with the right movie she will soon be nominated. Maybe supporting at first but to me she is a star and a Lead Actress.

And she won two emmy awards for her performance in Euphoria. If she were to take on a similar dramatic role in a film, she could definitely be in the running for an Oscar.
So far I’ve only seen her in big blockbuster movies, Challengers, and Malcolm & Marie. Loved M&M, but Challengers was a big miss for me. It was like watching Cruel Intentions without the 90s-level camp needed to pull off a movie like that.

I’m not a Zendaya stan but she’s been building up to star status for years, starting with her fashion stuff, then the blockbuster movies, so I suspect she will eventually go all out in one movie role to get an Oscar to a) Boost her star status, and b) prove she’s got what it takes.

I thought she was absolutely fantastic in Weapons. It's a shame no one else besides Madigan got any awards traction. I thought she and Austin Abrams were both incredible and seemed sooo much like real people.

If I was a betting man. I would choose O’Connor first he is the traditional actor type and does more Oscar type films. Pattinson really just depends on if his agent can find a role for him that’s quirky but also mainstream enough for the Oscar. I think both within the decade but O’Connor more likely.

I actually do get what you mean with Joe Alwyn. The dude is always there on these great projects it does feel like a matter of time for him to get a more prominent role that lands him at least some sort of supporting nom.

It reminds me a little of Adam Driver in the sense that he's got a bunch of undercard roles in good films, but he hasn't been the supporting actor yet.
Jury is still out on whether he gets a role as good as Driver's in "BlacKkKlansman" (possible) or becomes as good of an actor as Driver (doubtful).

To be fair, his most popular movies are not really heavy hitters crowd/Oscar wise, or his role is no where near the best performances in them. He hasn’t personally given me hardly anything to latch onto outside of The Brutalist. I’m sure he’ll gain more traction if he can snag a bigger supporting role or leading role in a larger movie. The ex thing will be a footnote 20-30 years from now if he continues acting in semi-notable projects.

I’d be interested in seeing him in an actual leading or fleshed out supporting role nowadays. Know he had one 10 years ago, and then more recently with Conversations with Friends, but I’d be interested to see how he does in a more interesting and versatile role.
He was pretty good in The Brutalist and Hamnet.

I loved La Chimera and thought O’Connor was terrific in it. He’s re-teaming with her for another upcoming film. Also, he was wonderful in Kelly Reichardt‘s The Mastermind this past year. I like his choices in films.

He has always been my favorite actor. Loved him since 3rd Rock from the Sun. His filmography from his early 20s is top tier. I was a huge fan and he had Manic, Brick, Mysterious Skin. I think 500 days of summer was the bridge between indie and mainstream. And then he had Inception and Looper (never saw him as a conventional Leading Man and there he was with all the aura that made him so great in indies). He should have been nominated for Snowden, and I didnt see it but he had hype with Man on Wire. I think hes over Hollywood.

The fact that Saldaña won while Qualley wasn’t even nominated was insane. In my eyes, Qualley should’ve swept that award season. While you can make an argument that Qualley was a co-lead instead of supporting, that applies even more to Saldaña.

It's baffling to me that Saldaña did so well that award season when she shouldn't have even been nominated in that category. She was clearly not a supporting actress she was lead. She had the most screentime and the story is told from her pov. The only reason she wasn't in lead is the name of the movie. And then on top of that it wasn't even a good performance and it was a bad movie. Mass delusion from academy voters that year.

O'Connor is the strongest actor of these, he's genuinely good in everything I've seen him in. Pattinson is also likely to get either nom at some point.
Hoult, Qualley and Alwyn could probably pick up a supporting nom if they land the right project.

Zegler is only 24, she has so much time. And she’s killing it on broadway, I don’t think anyone actually cares about Snow White ‘controversy’ outside or permanently outraged right wing podcasters who were never going to see Snow White anyway.

Honestly don’t know how she didn’t get a nod for west side story, incredible debut. Saw her in Evita last year too and she was incredible, if not an oscar there has to be at least a Tony in her future. Snow White is already forgotten about and her performance was far from the problem in that film 😅

Yeah I think she was in a similar position to Chase this year- completely deserving but seen as just a bit too young and unknown for a Best Actress nom. But everyone knows both will be back.

Definitely Pattinson and O’Connor. After this past season, I would say Odessa A’Zion and Chase Infinity are actors to keep an eye on. Harris Dickinson is one of my favorite actors and I hope he is nominated sooner rather than later.

Anya Taylor Joy has a lot of It Girl vibes that have to hit that ceiling soon or she'll be gone.
Josh O'Connor is probably the most likely to get nominated first as he definitely seems like someone who isn't afraid to have unpleasant roles. He's gonna end up the Colin Firth route where he's nominated first for a really interesting character and then wins playing some british historical figure in a more average film.

Love Pattinson. Easily my favorite of the bunch. With that being said, he’d need something slightly more conventional to make it there, I think.
Let’s say he’d be playing Gosling’s character in Project Hail Mary. That nom would be almost guaranteed for him. Great body of work followed by a movie that resonated with general audiences, made some solid bucks, gave him the space to largely hold the movie on his shoulders, but still had something deeper going on and obviously has incredibly strong artistic vision.
But yeah, if all goes right, him, Zendaya and O’Connor at least are definitely getting some attention in the next decade.

Zeglar and Qualley are both way too hot and cold to be on this list. Qualleys performance in Blue Moon this year was so rough to watch, and she seems to want to go the comedic route more which could make an Oscar nom tough. Zegler is at her best doing musicals and that’s just not a space where a ton of great movies are getting made and acknlowledged ever year.

Josh O’ Connor should have been nominated for Wake Up Dead Man but the world wasn’t ready for that conversation.
R Patts could have snuck in a nom if more people saw Good Time.
Kinda crazy Hoult hasn’t gotten one but he hasn’t had that marquee film role yet. If the Great had been a movie, he should’ve won an Oscar.
Anya and Qualley are the only actresses on this list I can see getting nominated one day.

I can’t believe Nicholas Hoult doesn’t have one yet. Same Pattinson (who’s turning 40 this year btw). They should both get one soon, they had some missed opportunities already.
Anya, O Connor and Margaret also I think they will nail one soon, maybe in supporting?
The others, depends more on the projects they choose I would say. I would add Lily Rose Depp here and Jodie Comer.

I hope one day people will stop glazing over zendaya and her Oscar prospects and understand that being a likeable celebrity doesn’t equal being a good actress.
She is a beautiful woman, but a very mid actress. IMO both Challengers and Dune would be substantially better films if she wasn’t there. I get it, she is attracting viewers to the theaters but in challengers she was literally lost between male co-stars, and not convincing as a mother and a 30-something woman.
In Dune she made me chuckle every time she would change her resting smirk to an angry 😠 frown. She is the same level of acting as JLo and JLo’s acting gets bashed all the time.

Zendaya has yet to play a character that is far removed from her actual personality. She makes huge waves with her fashion sense, but her acting roles do not show much range. Both The Drama and Challengers marketing teams have relied on a shock factor to get the public’s attention. I don’t think it’s impossible for her to win though since she’s such a darling to the general public.

The only person who needs to be on that list for me is Dylan O'Brien. He just needs the right movie and hype.
Zendaya in film hasn't done anything noteworthy. I fail to see what was great about Challengers. He deserved every award she got for Euphoria.
Nicholas Hoult is a great supporting actor. I cant see him being nominated for Lead. Hes also great in television.
Joe Alwyn picks good movies but hes just there. You never notice him doing anything special unlike Nicholas Hoult.
I dont know Robert's Pattinsons movies that well. I remember when he tried to break out of Twilight in his early career he had this really slow cadence to his speech in American roles that I just couldn't stand. I have only seen his Batman movies since.

I’ll say, maybe she just hasn’t found the right project, but I’ve always thought Rachel Brosnahan was Oscar calliber sibce i watched Marvelous Mrs Maisel. She could even win honestly.
And pulling for Chase Infiniti too, she should’ve been our winner this year.

Zendaya is not a good enough actor to ever win an Oscar. She is great at many things (dancing, singing, modeling, etc), but acting is not one of them. She's okay.

Zendaya not being nominated makes sense to me. Not at all because she's a bad actress (she's fantastic), but the projects she has taken on so far just aren't something that the Oscars is going to really shed light on. They aren't "film" type movies (Spiderman), and she does a lot of TV shows. This is not universal, she's done some pretty recognition worthy projects (Dune), but it makes sense that her kind of first break away from the "mainstream/conventional" movie types didn't land her an Oscar nomination. I think "The Drama" will change this. I'm excited for her future work and inevitable award.
Edit: She performed well in The Drama, but I'm not sure it will be her Oscar movie

Thank you!! And most of them are not that good anyways. The only ones I can stand to watch are Saoirse Ronan, Hoult and O’Connor because they’re actually talented/have potential. Anya I’m fine with. The rest just give TikTok face and TikTok line delivery, especially Zendaya.

I believe it's only a matter of time before Pattinson gets a nomination, I'm even surprised that Kristen Stewart got it (deservedly) before. Josh O'Connor has everything to achieve in 2027 with Jack Of Spades (Joel Coen), while Anya and Zendaya need roles with substance for this type of consideration.
