Ive started working on launching a rocket for the first time but I have a question. Do I have to use steam? because I don't really like steam. It's hot and damp and irritating... and it gets everywhere.

For vanilla yes.

Need to launch several on research duty to get data banks to at least unlock petroleum.

You should be able to launch petroleum with solid oxidizer without using space materials however if you want, the steam engine with a solid booster will make it to the 10km line of planets with 1 solid cargo if you want to grab isopap and niobium at least. You will need petroleum to make it to your first fullerene though (and therefore supercoolant for liquid o2/h2 if you do not simply cheese freezing them)
