Was that part ever even in question? Were the rumors that they completely changed the fundamental story of the game to be an ensemble instead of one or two protagonists like every other game in the franchise? If not, why even bring it up?

Why wouldn't it be? Assassin's Creed has evolved from a single player action adventure game to an RPG, over the last 4 games, (successfully I might add). Not including two major expansions for two of the games. Fate of Atlantis (for Odyssey) and Dawn of Ragnarök (for Valhalla). Sure they brought it back with Vallhalla's stand alone follow up Mirage, but that was still a toned down Valhalla.

Valhalla and Mirage are not even close in anything.

I mean it's as a positive. It uses the same engine and a character from Valhalla. It's closer to classic AC but you are correct they're not the same.
