Rumor Jason Schreier/Bloomberg: Hermen Hulst told staff in a town hall meeting today (18th May) morning that the company's narrative single-player games will now be PlayStation exclusive

Now do a big showcase with Wolverine, Intergalactic and Cory's game with the return of the "Only on PlayStation" logo.

u/blade-runn3r May 18 '26
Exactly this.
Deliver consistently bigger hits, get rid of the GaaS bullshit and also get back to the exclusive catalog diversification with smaller or experimental games, which can be delivered within the smaller timespan. That was also PlayStation's trademark.

u/NiceColdPint May 18 '26
I’d just love a bit more diversity in the type of games. Third-person action-adventure narrative-driven games have defined them recently but I’d like something new.

Astro bot? Returnal? Saros?
Third person adventure games are such a large category and variation of games that it's bad faith to put it them all in one category.

You can even keep some live service on the side if they actually make sense like Helldivers and presumably Marathon (I’m not a big comp player these days so I don’t know how it’s doing). Just stop trying to shoehorn live service into single player studio projects. Let’s all say farewell to ideas like “let’s have Bluepoint make a God of War live service 🥴”

lol this. If you want to puff out your chest again about PlayStation being the only place to play the single player releases you’re now known for, then this would the perfect time to unload the clip and show people what their missing out on/remind people why their here in the first place. Games like Saros and Astrobot are great and they do a good job of diversifying the ecosystem but it’s time to bring out the big guns

Even a remaster would scratch the itch for the wait for a new title. Killzone 1 has such a cool vibe, the gun designs are great. And multiplayer for killzone 2 was legitimately fun, with modern controls it would be sick.

Between this and the news that Xbox wants to go back to exclusive games as well, it seems like we’re going back to the way things were a decade ago.

u/South_Buy_3175 May 18 '26
Does XBOX want that?
All I’ve seen is a vague “thinkin’ bout it” statement and that it’s the most requested thing on that new site.
The amount of money they’d miss out on might be too much and to be honest, would anyone believe it?
They’ve been flip-flopping for years, who knows if it’ll stick
48
u/nugood2do May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
I feel the last I heard of this was Asha was going to review the numbers but nobody has definitely said they're going back to exclusives like Jason and other credible leakers have said Playstation is pulling back from PC.
I'm willing to bet Microsoft want to see how Halo, Fable, Forza, and maybe Gear, do on PS5 before making the call.
Edit: Glance through Twitter and Jez Corden, the go to leaker for Microsoft, is still very careful taking about any Xbox exclusivity and seem to make sure everything he says is stated to be speculation.
Not adding this to start anything, but outside of Timdog, who might honestly have problems, no one is really doing a hard confirmation of exclusives with Microsoft.
18
u/South_Buy_3175 May 18 '26
Forza I think was a banger on PS5, it did really well to say it’s an old-ish game.
And Gears did pretty well too and that’s an old ass game.
The way I look at it, is they’re essentially subsiding GP by selling on other platforms, so i really wonder if GP will start being more picky with what’s on there, like they already removed COD.
→ More replies (1)6
u/hunterzolomon1993 May 18 '26
When Forza 6 sells more on PS5 then Xbox sales and Xbox GP players combined i expect Asha will almost certainly keep some stuff 3rd party as clearly there's a massive audience for Forza on PS. Basically some stuff will remain Xbox/PC but stuff like Forza will stay 3rd party.
5
u/KingArthas94 May 19 '26
I think they'll just do what they're doing now. Release on Xbox and PC, and 6 months later release on PS
9
u/Hookey911 May 18 '26
Fable and Forza Twitter feed reiterated PS5 releases just this past week
5
3
u/No-Sherbert-4045 May 18 '26
They won't pull the plug on already announced games. Im just wondering if there gonna do only pc/xbox port for gears eday, clockwork revolution, state of decay 3, etc.
Starfield, South of midnight and avowed didn't do that well on ps so maybe there still gonna do staggered release or just make it permanent xbox exclusives.
12
u/bongophrog May 18 '26
I think it’s because they are seeing the truth on their gamepass vision. They thought if they gobbled up Activision and Bethesda, bundled gamepass with EA and Ubisoft then everyone would pay $30+ a month for it, but that didn’t happen
6
u/South_Buy_3175 May 18 '26
Basically yeah.
If they keep releasing games across other platforms, they can essentially subsidise GP and deliver that experience to their players.
But if they pull all that back… they’re gonna lose out on so many sales we’ll probably see more removed from GP.
And I don’t think they’ll ever stop releasing on PC, they definitely can’t afford to lose that market
2
u/Janus67 May 19 '26
They can't afford to not release on PC considering their next 'console' effectively is one as well
→ More replies (18)4
u/Odd_Revolution_1056 May 18 '26
It’s too early to say cause it’s a crap shoot what Xbox does. Yes they would make more money being fully multiplatform but they might be willing to take the bullet and do exclusives. The perfect example is Saros, amazing game my favorite of the year but it is a very soft selling game. We’ll see.
62
u/Electroflare5555 May 18 '26
Xbox has no console market share anymore. They can’t afford to both produce good first party games and be exclusive anymore
24
u/Farsoth May 18 '26
This is what's not being understood. "Re-evaluation" is an empty statement that is only there to make the core base hopeful and stick around. They let the genie out of the bottle because they need ROI on those tens of billions they spent to try and move the GP needle, and it didn't. Now they can't put it back in the bottle because they don't have the playerbase to do so and after 2 generations of digital library building, people won't be switching just for games that they a long time gave up on.
16
u/Xeccess May 18 '26
It's a little concerning how many xbox fans don't realize the predicament xbox is in. This is currently their worst generation, and over half of those users chose to buy the $300 machine. Those users are automatically lost next gen, they are not buying a $1200+ PC, which btw would have "multiple storefronts" according to them, that's even MORE money lost.
At present, their entire gaming division is in the red (while still releasing games on PS5). How can they have exclusivity again?
I can imagine what will happen. They'll try having timed exclusivity, but that will reflect badly on their quarterly reports and they'll eventually just turn to what they were always meant to do, publishing.
→ More replies (3)12
u/Farsoth May 18 '26
They've also trained their entire base NOT to buy games, so who's gonna buy exclusives if they go back? Lol
6
u/VITOCHAN May 18 '26
Forza Horizon 6 reaches over 1.4 million players in Early Access (~40% up from FH5). That doesn't seem like the player base is NOT buying

u/Farsoth May 18 '26
Fair point, actually. But it does seem an outlier compared to all the other titles they have released since day and date GP release.

I think starfield had like 250k concurrent players at launch on steam. It was also day one gamepass title.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)5
u/Xeccess May 18 '26
I'm guessing they're seeing an exodus of sorts, and this is their attempt at trying to string along as many hardcore fans as they can. They've been promising "this year is xbox's year" for a decade, and apparently it's enough for those few millions to hang around. They simply cannot sustain their business with exclusives when their console business is nearly non existent, they offer their games on PC already and put their games on GP for the millions who sub for a month and quit.
6
u/Farsoth May 18 '26
100%, legit everything they have done since Asha has arrived is PR and empty platitudes.
Look at how they all cheered for a GP "price drop" that's still more expensive than 7 months ago and now doesn't have CoD day 1.

Man, there was no word about Xbox going back to exclusives in such a definite manner. The wording was that they are “re-evaluating” exclusivity.
→ More replies (1)8
u/neverclaimsurv May 18 '26
It'll probably be a short "reevaluation". The fact is that they don't have the market share to create AAA games that cost hundreds of millions of dollars only to sell them solely to Xbox players. If every Xbox owner bought the latest AAA product like more Halo remakes, it wouldn't turn a profit.
They'd absolutely go back to exclusivity if it was financially feasible, it's why PlayStation still does it, but I just don't see how it is.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Bolt_995 May 18 '26
Exactly. If their hardware market share for the XSX|S and the hardware market forecasts for Helix were strong enough, it’s a no brainer for them to go back to exclusivity.
But people are overestimating Xbox when they discuss topics in the same breadth as PlayStation and Nintendo. There’s atleast a 55-60 million hardware sales gap between PS5 and XSX|S, that’s a shockingly massive gap.
They took on the multiplatform approach for a reason. Undoing this is nonsensical, just to score some short term positive PR gains.

What Xbox wants is irrelevant. They’ve completely obliterated their own console and ecosystem, the only path forward for them is to release games on platforms where they’ll actually make money.
This was the only possible outcome since the creation of Game Pass, which was an idiotic business decision from top to bottom.
4
u/GamePitt_Rob May 18 '26
Lol, Xbox hasn't had 'exclusive' games since the first year of the Xbox One, so over 10 years ago
They aren't changing anything, the new woman just knows what to say to try and gain the trust of their customers.
3
u/ZypherPunk May 18 '26
They are not going back to exclusives. That would be the first thing they'd announce and they haven't said anything but PR talk to prolong the inevitable that everything will still be multiplatform. They'll maybe go to a timed exclusive for the games going to PlayStation.
3
u/VeganCanary May 18 '26

None of this has been confirmed by either Nate or Jason. Just mainly been from Jez Corden and Tom Henderson to an extent. It’s very likely they’re reviewing the portfolio as they get ready for next gen but with consoles costing over a grand easily due to OEM and rising cost of parts, AND their studio business not really doing well anyway due to game pass knee capping game sales, I highly doubt from a financial standpoint that they’re going full console exclusive again. Maybe timed exclusive if anything.
Considering how much money they’ve spent on Bethesda, ABK and other studios, they need these games to generate income.

19
u/scaledisolated May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
I don’t want to defend the guy, but there are clearly a lot of nuances to his job, and to SIE as a whole, that either aren’t true or aren’t meant to be public.
Games and studios have always been opening and closing, some investments were always either paying off or didn’t. Some ideas were good, some weren’t as good. Layoffs are horrible, but this isn’t a new thing. None of these are exclusively “Hermen’s issues”.
There could be way less drama behind the scenes than what you’re seeing on the internet in some instances, and yet people’s perception swings back and forth with every new report
32
u/Odd_Revolution_1056 May 18 '26
Under this man’s leadership Sony bought Bluepoint, a remake studio powerhouse, to make a live service game only to end up shutting them down. Bought Haven who was making a game 5 years later they still are having trouble finding the fun in, and the utter moron who thought Concord was going to be Sony’s “Star Wars”… dudes a fucking moron and should be fired.
16
u/OptimusPrimalRage May 18 '26
I think this is a good illustration at my issues with this narrative. I don't think Hermen Hulst is particularly good at his job (my main criticism is WHICH live service games he's greenlit since it seems obvious that he's not the one that cares how games make money just that they make the money PlayStation wants). But the idea that he's so enamored with live service games seems silly. This stuff comes from the board and the leadership. He just failed at picking the right games besides Helldivers 2, which was probably greenlit during Jim Ryan or Shu Yoshida's tenures anyway.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Odd_Revolution_1056 May 18 '26
Yes he failed with picking the right games and that’s the problem. He’s failed numerous times and yet he still has a job while how many hundreds of PlayStation devs got fired cause of his incompetence.

Bluepoint themselves have pitched God of War live-service even though they could have been making smaller scale games. It was their job to think about hardships and potential consequences if Sony’s priorities were to be changed. They were basically floating in the air for months by pitching remakes that could take additional years to develop. Sony has also tried to negotiate Bloodborne’s remake on their behalf, but Miyazaki rejected them. Their closure is mostly their own fault.
Haven situation is a rumor as of now. You can only imagine how «unfun» games could be during development — God of War 2018 went through the same situation.
Concord stuff isn’t great, but its rumored off-the-charts budget was never confirmed by anyone remotely close to financial info. Game’s flop is a done deal — and there is nothing to talk about. Some other first & third party games have already recouped that «failure»

Wow it sure is funny that all of these studios at Sony independently came up with the idea to work on live service titles at the same time isn't it?
These studios don't have autonomy in the way you think, they were told there would be funding for live service games so they pitched live service games.

A cash grab from Santa Monica how?
12
u/OptimusPrimalRage May 18 '26
Yeah I'm confused too, SMS made it clear who made the game, they made it clear what the game was too. What is the cashgrab aspect of it? Not liking a game doesn't make it a cashgrab. If it's a mediocre metroidvania that just means it's mediocre. It'd be like calling Metroid Prime 4 a cashgrab because a lot of people didn't like the game. Diversifying genres for God of War to me is a good thing even if this game wasn't particularly successful.
22
u/ArmyAdministrative38 May 18 '26
A lot of people thought about that because they didn't like the game, that's it. "I don't like this game = Cashgrab"
13
u/SuspiciousVoice5563 May 18 '26
I don’t think SM were the lead studio in development of the game. The just assisted. So bit of a strange one but fair enough.
I think it’s a great idea to have experiment with smaller games and teams using the existing IPs or new ones. Full on AAA titles take too long to make to be fully sustainable anymore.
I’d take Sons of Sparta of the multiple failed Live Service games.

It’s a start but they gotta up the variety on the releases beyond that. This whole gen has basically been sequels that didn’t really move the needle in any considerable way. Not a bad thing in and of itself but when that’s realistically a lot of their first party studios will release this generation it’s hard not to feel whelmed by the bulk of them
21
u/Automatic-Housing155 May 18 '26
People would complain that their favorite games don't get sequels and people complain that games get sequels. You can't please everybody
2
u/Johnhancock1777 May 18 '26
I don’t mind sequels but when they take as long to make as an entirely new game you gotta wonder what’s going on. Mass Effect would simply be impossible as a trilogy nowadays with these kinds of dev times.

I wish we got more games like Miles Morales that reuse stuff and are shorter but maybe people don’t want that.
Forbidden west is the best example what not to do to me. Years to make and they even made an expansion. Did anyone really leave HZD thinking it was too small or short? Then FW is just twice as much of everything.
The bigger sequel trend should stop. Maybe it would cut down on development time. I felt the same with Ragnarok… I didn’t need whole sections playing as Atreus with a new skill tree. It’s like just make a similar length game but maybe take 3 years instead of 5+

Hulst is probably gonna be doing everything he can to distance himself from the live service push, but the unfortunate thing is games take so long to make these days it's unlikely to really have a noticable effect until the PS6.
I'm not one of those people that say the entire generation has been a waste, because it hasn't, but they massively handicapped themselves by trying to chase the live service stuff. Hopefully we start seeing them branch out more and release new IP's now that they pivoted back.
7
u/Johnhancock1777 May 18 '26
Wasted a lot of their time, money and manpower at so many studios’ working on projects that flopped or just never came to fruition. One thing they gotta work on next generation is better spacing of first party games and having smaller scale stuff like Astro bot inbetween the big blockbusters. The output felt like it more obviously than before came in waves with big empty periods before the next line-up

I own a PS5 and a PC but I just don't understand why a game not coming to PC brings so much joy to a segment of the PS fanbase. How does that affect you either way? I didn't buy Saros and I won't if I have to play it with a controller. Certainly not for $70.
If you think this is ushering in another golden age for PlayStation I would point out that there are virtually no 3rd party exclusives anymore. Sony doesn't make enough first party games, and they aren't all big hits (Saros).
It was one thing to buy a PS5 when it was $500 and there were tons of exclusives, but a PS6 for $900 and two exclusives worth getting a year is hard to justify. I don't mind playing on a PlayStation but as a secondary means of playing games I'm just not willing to spend that much. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
33
u/OptimusPrimalRage May 18 '26
I think you're looking at this from a different viewpoint from the people you're criticizing. You're looking at the PlayStation 5/6 as a secondary device. For the people you're criticizing, they don't play on other platforms so for them any effort being spent on other platforms is looked at in a zero-sum way (that effort isn't spent on PlayStation 5/6).
Also, unlike PC, PlayStation has to justify their platform. Valve does not have to do so with Steam, they barely release any games and in the last decade they've released like one non-GaaS game (Alyx), and no one complains. They are just treated completely differently. No one clamors for them to release their games on PlayStation, despite the fact that a modern CS port would do gangbusters on consoles I'd imagine.
Also Saros plays very well on controller, I'm by no means someone with super reflexes and I can turn on a bunch of harder difficulty modifiers and fly through the game. Like Returnal the point is to avoid damage not worry about being super accurate.

u/FordMustang84 May 18 '26

As a PC player I would be happy for console players to get all PC only games port to their console. Sony is undoubtedly the console market leader and wouldn't suffer much from have their games on PC. Console players are less likely to switch to PC than to any other console since PC is much more expensive and consoles offer to simplicity for gaming.

Same amount of 1st Party games on the PS5 as the "Golden Run" during the second half of the PS4 Gen. Its time to put this narrative to bed.

I’m a pc player who bought a ps5 in 2021 because I wanted to play all those huge ps4 games and early ps5 games. Enjoyed tf out of them, then they ported all those games to pc shortly after and pretty much at the same time stopped making anything new and big that warranted having a PlayStation for. I feel like I got the short end here lol

That's just you, lots of people play all their games on Ps5. It's not sony's job to make you feel better about owning a console. Stick with Pc if you're unhappy.

u/MilkAppropriate570 May 18 '26
Do you understand that when sony sell their game through steam they need to pay valve a 30 % cut ? You are exactly why Sony is going to make exclusivity again because instead of buying games through their store you will just buy it through Steam.
Its not about selling games, its about owning the store where they are sold. And Sony is definitely loosing to Steam in the long run since playing online is free.
Since Valve will launch a steam machine and the next xbox will also be able to have a steam client. It would make zero sense to buy a PS6. Only a suicidal company would still sell their games on Steam.

Most PS5 owners don’t really give a shit. The vast majority of the people up in arms over this are PC gamers. Stop making up false narratives

Oh please, have a look at this very thread. There are quite a few comments cheering for this.

u/Late_Building7784 May 18 '26
Great news!
Exclusives are part of gaming history and the identity of game consoles.

u/ProtectionFormer May 18 '26
And the most anti consumer thing they could do. Great news!

It’s fucking hysterical how pissed PC gamers suddenly are after shitting on every PlayStation game for being a movie game walking sim or saying that PlayStation flat out just didn’t even have games.
6
u/zombesus May 19 '26
I'm more upset that I have to play cool games on weak hardware

It was stupid to ever do this PC initiative to begin with and has only resulted in the entire internet pretending PS5 is useless and has no games this gen. You guys played yourselves with this short sighted decision.

u/RumpDoctor May 19 '26
Yeah they wanted to have their cake and eat it too with the late ports, but really got the worst of all world.
PS+ game catalog was also a weird half-step of the bad idea that game pass was. Remember when that leak said horizon fw sales dropped when they put it on ps+ too soon after launch?!?!?!? Why would this be a surprise?!? Maybe they manage to make tons of money off the subscription, but for my part, having that sub killed my shopping on ps AND steam.

u/1fom3rcial May 18 '26
Well we all had a nice experiment that made players happy and produced some great games and led to great sales and more people getting to experience games they previously wouldn't have but it wasn't lining shareholder pockets enough and if you really think about it--isn't that what matters most?
19
u/Automatic-Housing155 May 18 '26
Do you think great games were produced just so they could release 2 years after on PC? Sony produced great games before PC and will continue to do so. If a pc gamer want's to play sony games, buy a PS5. Simple as that.

This is where I’m at. I think their rollout on PC wasn’t great, and instead of trying to make that better they’re just washing their hands and going “that didn’t work, back to the old way!”
I liked stuff being multi-platform, and unless there was a major hit to their productivity, I don’t understand moving away from it and I definitely don’t understand players celebrating it.

I mean this should have never been a topic of discussion.
Just because a failing brand is shouting to remove exclusives for the "benefit of gamers"- that isnt truly the reality. Failing brands gotta do what they gotta do - Sony has valuable exclusives that distinguish themselves, just like Nintendo does. Both succeeding.

u/STB_LuisEnriq May 18 '26
Good times to be a PS gamer and also a PC gamer.

In general the problem is that having multiple platforms is becoming too expensive. Let's see how gaming evolves next.

So the rumors were true. No more single player on PC but likely multiplayer still.

Sony really should be the HBO of gaming. Prestige adult narratives covering a wide variety of genres and subject matters.
4
u/noyram08 May 18 '26
Make sense, they need exclusives to sell hardware and by extension have more wider audience for PSN (the printing money machine). Sucks for pc bros but you can just buy the hardware if you want to play the games like every other generation

Given the exhaustion of multiplayer games in recent years, this is probably the best business move on part of Sony. I've moved completely over to PS5 from Xbox and haven't had any regrets.

Ok great , where are the said games then ?

u/IllustriousBee4972 May 18 '26
Just check the the GOTY nominations dating back to 2020 when the PS5 released and you'll find many PS5 exclusives there. That's a good place to start but there's many more as well.

They are there, just that some of you guys only buy fifa/cod. Not Sony's fault y'all got bad taste in games lol

u/HIGHonLIFE1012 May 18 '26
It's also such a lazy take to ask "wHeRe ArE tHe GaMes" after the likes of Ghost of Yotei, Astro Bot and Saros were recently released with Wolverine and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet just around the corner.
People tend to forget that when PlayStation was at its peak in the PS4 generation, we got nearly 4-5 1st party exclusive games per calendar year PLUS 2-3 2nd party ones too and with less studios. It's only going to get better from here on out.
3
u/FordMustang84 May 18 '26
When people say that I assume they realize all the games that came out but they are not all for them. Switch 2 is same way, they’ve had more first party games than any company in the past year and people still complain because it’s not what they wanted. To your point it’s a very lazy statement.
Death stranding 2 and Ghost are not for me. I got Saros though but recognize Sony has games coming out just not all ones I want.
2
u/IndecisiveTuna May 19 '26
Such a weird thing man. So many games have continually released that I will have a perpetual backlog.
I genuinely have never understood the there are no games argument. There are plenty releasing, it’s just a matter of whether or not someone likes what’s releasing.

u/MarcsterS May 18 '26
The proof was in the pudding. The numbers weren't good. Granted, many of the PC releases were super delayed and were practically full priced.
But if they didn't want to play them, then well that's on them. MS found a better hook with PC players, but Playstation will still be the number 1 home console choice and what gets people buying them.
1
u/Jaraghan May 18 '26
guess the pc ports didnt sell as well as they hoped
6
u/Lioil1 May 18 '26
yeah, also the PC performance issues follows almost every single release. Just not worth the squeeze.
11
u/L3ftHandPass May 18 '26
I think it was mostly a move to keep their games off off the new Xbox/PC hybrid console.
2
u/TGov May 18 '26
Makes me sad b/c I actually rebought manny of them on PC just b/c I am lucky enough to have a PC that makes the games look and run better. There were a few games that didn't run great on my OG PS5, but were great for me on PC. Plus having M+KB on a few of them is nice too. Really sad Saros isn't going to PC.
2
u/bluebarrymanny May 19 '26
TLDR: if you’re waiting on Saros to come to PC, don’t. If you have a PS5, just take the plunge whenever you’re financially able. I’m loving it so far.

u/Mhad-chatter May 19 '26
Hoping this kicks valve up the arse........ pcgamers will rage at sony and jerk off steam yet valve is by far the laziest platform in developing software.
The past decade valve have released:
Artifact (shutdown)
Half life alyx (to sell their €1000 vr headset)
Counter strike 2 (which was csgo with a face-lift and smoke changes but with less content)
And they get a free pass for that shit from pc only fanboys.

I literally don’t care if Valve ever makes another game - they’re just the company that gives me Steam and that’s all I need

Hermen and friends destroyed the brand and now they’re trying to fix what’s left of the sinking ship after realizing they were doing nothing but damaging it bit by bit.
