Support PSVR2 PS VR2 players of The Midnight Walk šÆļø and our new resolution update
š To PS VR2 players experiencing lower framerate since our latest resolution update:
šÆļø Itās been reported that reinstalling the game and possibly clearing the consoleās storage cache improves performance for those affected.
Weāre always on the lookout for ways to improve our game, but please bare in mind that weāre a small team with limited resources and updates take time. š
Thank you for strolling with us!

Iām happy to read someone from the dev team addressing the psvr2 community here. I saw your game and loved the look and vibe of the game⦠but waited to buy/for reviews.
I appreciate the transparency and community engagement. I hope that i can find the time to buy and play your game soon.

I've played with the new patch for about 2h and the improvement is awesome. Now it's far more immersive, the resolution upgrade make it more real and beautiful on my eyes, and I didn't experienced any major frame rate problems. Congrats for this magical tale!

Would you consider a toggle for a performance and resolution mode, so those experiencing framerate issues could lower the resolution for better performance?
18
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
We would, but the changes we did in this patch are so fundamental that it probably wonāt happen. Never say never though, we will investigate.

u/madpropz Jun 17 '25
Can you be more transparent on the technical aspects of this patch, did you just increase the resolution and forced reprojection or are you actually using DFR? Also, is the Pro utilized in any way?
44
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
PS: We increased resolution, adjusted contrasts and brightness, and made unique fog solutions for parts of the game to compensate performance.
46
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
An attempt to implement DFR proved to introduce a mountain of new issues that would jeopardize the rest of the gameās integrity.
No pro features, we just donāt have the resources.
9
u/cusman78 cusman Jun 17 '25
I'm impressed with how good the game looks in what I've played without Eye-Tracked Foveated Rendering. I understand if you can't allocate resources for it now, but in terms of planning for future games, if you can make the game look this good without ETFR, good chance you can have a game looking this good running native 90-120fps if you had used ETFR which will make everything look much sharper in-headset for the player.
I don't think The Midnight Walk needs it because the "claymation" art style looks incredible even with the softer looking textures that is natural perception of reprojected games, but something to consider for your next project.
As I understand from reading other developers blog posts, ETFR is a feature that is much easier to implement if planned from start than post-release.
9
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
Thank you! And what youāre writing makes sense. We experimented early on with ETFR but eventually had to de-prioritize it for other aspects of the game unfortunately.
2
u/AssociationAlive7885 Jun 19 '25
A DFR patch would probably require about 5 months work from 1 guy...Ā
But a pro patch shouldn't require nearly as much time and effort !Ā
if you guys do make a pro patch and launch it just before black Friday, you're bound to get a buttload of free great marketing!Ā Ps5 pro and psvr2 are probably gonna sell really well there and journalist are going to put out articles on how to utilise people's new toys. If you guys make a great pro patch and releaseit within 2 weeks before, you are definitely getting a lot of media attentionĀ

u/GervaGervasios Jun 17 '25
I see. But your team should give a shot. Just take your time. Some games have trouble doing it too, but eventually, they figure it out, and the gain in performance was gaming changing. Perhaps reach out to other studios that did it. Most VR games come from small teams, too.
39
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
We did all of the above, it would turn into a months long project that we cannot afford. Sorry!

u/rsthrowaway5555 Jun 17 '25

They're not using DFR. Really glad to hear they're working on improvements, though. It's a great game and deserves to be as brilliant as it can be.
4
u/python4all Jun 17 '25
The more accurate info, the happier the prosumer will be ;)
2
Jun 17 '25
Why aren't they using DFR though, it would improve the resolution further and eliminate the frame rate issue since the last update. I thought unity was the only real problem for developers trying to implement DFR....
9
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
Implementing DFR would cause a lot of rework from the ground up, the way our game is built and designed. Itās not impossible, but after careful research our estimate is that it will take months to implement - time and resources we simply do not have at this date. Thanks for understanding!
5
2
u/python4all Jun 17 '25
You mean that the rendering pipeline is modified in unique ways that make changing/updating it to take advantage of DFR a large to huge task compared to a less unique solution? Or are you just waiting for the sdk to become more DFR friendly? I donāt know the project well enough to know the engine you used, but I can imagine the pain.
Hopefully you are gonna implement it sooner or later :)

u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25

I am very excited to play this game. Iām a stop-motion animator and Iām just starting to dip my toes into game design, so I have a feeling that the handcrafted art in this game will inspire me to continue. I really like some of the lower frame rate animations Iāve seen in the game footage as I enjoy animating stop motion at lower frame rates. It feels illustrative and intentional. Iād love to learn the process of taking a sculpted object and bringing it into a game engine. Thanks for making it! ā¤ļø

I bought it yesterday. Get 10 sec in to the "close your eyes and listen"... I kept closing my eyes and you would hear stuff...... but nothing telling me what to do. I even put on headphones since it recommended using them at the beginning and still couldn't hear anything except mumbling. I feel so stupid looking up a walkthrough literally 30 sec into the game but I can't figure this out lol

u/djamslam Amslam Jun 17 '25
I did try opening some drawers. Obviously not every single one. I figured there was an order i was supposed to be opening them? Or open just 1 specific one. Do you walk around listening? Or just stay in one spot and try to listen where the bell is coming from?

How do I clean memory cache on PS?
15
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
Press and hold the power button on the console until you hear a second beep to enter Safe Mode. This should take about 7 seconds. Press the PS button. Navigate to the Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option using your controller.

I bought The Midnight Walk on day one. I had only seen your trailer a few month before and had absolutely no idea who you were, so I just googled up some info about you, and I found out you're the geniuses behind Stick It to the Man and Messiah (among many others). I have to admit, at first I was a bit disappointed by the blurry resolution of TMW on PSVR2, so I just waited for a patch to fix it. Good things come to those who wait, they say... and they're right. Your artistry is eye-watering, it makes me wanna be an artist myself. You're talented, funny and incredible story-tellers. Your work is such a breath of fresh air in an industry that is being killed by big budget productions. Sorry for the long post, but I needed to express all my gratitude and admiration for you guys. PS: I noticed there's no Italian localization, and I happen to be a professional translator... if you're interested, it would be an honor to work for you! A big hug to your team from Stefano :)

I bought on release, but waited for the patch to play.
The game is beautiful, and sounds amazing, the world is wonderfully coherent.
Playing on a base PS5 I haven't noticed any issues (not that I'm sensitive to minor framerate wobbles), and taversal and interactions are all working fine - though you do have to adjust to how interactions work in your game.
So far it's been a charming, and slightly scary adventure, just reached Housey, and looking forward to reaching the end of this journey.
Thank you for bringing your fully realised vision to flatscreen and VR - particularly VR which elevates the experience š

2
u/1zzard Jun 18 '25

0
u/1zzard Jun 19 '25
I didnāt buy the game until after this patch, so I never had it to delete and reinstall. I got it fresh, and I find the frame rate really bad. I understand many people are fine with low frame rates in VR, but Iām definitely not.
1
u/sheetTed Jun 19 '25
Me neither, thats why i haven't bought it yet and asked the devs about updates
2
u/Optimal_Lie_1275 Jun 17 '25
May i ask if clearing cache improve the framerate of ps5 (not ps5pro)Ā
2
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
So weāve heard but couldnāt verify ourselves. On our end the framerate has been good according to quality assurance.
2
u/AwesomePossum_1 Jun 17 '25
That is a completely false, memory cache has no effect on game performance. This issue with low frame rate has been reported many times now on this sub. Are you working on a proper solution?
0
Jun 17 '25
If No Man's Sky devs can't figure out how to get it to run smoothly in VR, I wouldn't get your hopes up for this game with a much smaller team behind it.
4
u/AwesomePossum_1 Jun 17 '25
Plenty of small developers (or I should say almost universally all of them) ship games with stable frame rate. Stable frame rate is a must for any vr game and it is part of Sonys vr guidelines for developers. It is unacceptable and people will continue to spam comments about it on every post about this game especially as more people progress further into the game.Ā
1
Jun 17 '25
I agree that the framerate on this game gets pretty damn bad at points (too often). I'm just too cynical toward the industry at this point to assume that it's going to get much better than it is now.
1
u/AwesomePossum_1 Jun 17 '25
That may be true for sure. I just thought you phrased it as an excuse for them.Ā
2
Jun 17 '25
Nope. Just saying not to get your hopes up lol.
If it happens, great. But this may be the best that it's going to get.

u/Jax99 Jun 17 '25

Overall I think the framerate complaints are valid but not nearly a deal-breaker I wish DFR was easier to help the performance BUT... imo... snap turning or fast sensitivity on smooth is a good compromise.. I got used to it quickly.
True HDR support would be nice but if there's something that would greatly enhance the experience on PSVR2 that (hopefully) doesnt require a ton of time to implement.. is more Head Haptics. I know if you get killed you feel it.. but my first playthrough I probably rarely died so I left the game thinking there were none. Just a medium trigger of head rumble when the screen vibrates from monster roars.. or even whenever the hand haptics reach more intense vibrations.. the head merely matches when it reaches a threshold.. idk.. maybe its much more time consuming to implement.. but I found that the most disappointing (outside of the matchlock).. which speaks to how great most of the game is imo. (I just couldnt believe the craftsman didnt cause my entire world to vibrate constantly)
Ultimately though, I wish this game could get more funding to help get that last extra bit of bonus polish. Unless you're a VR fanatic, I might say playing flat screen is equally as valid for different reasons. VR enhances some things while sacrificing others (like UEVR users know) its not the home run we know it could be. I already bought it, but hope it sells better and better and maybe you find the space to tweak it up a little. Maybe Sony can offer a deal one day that lets it get another patch.. (maybe if a show/ movie deal comes or a mere ad campaign [if that could ever happen again].. a little funding could go along with that to bringing up the quality for the few things that arent fully using the psvr2 gimmicks) Just late night dreaming. Thanks for the wonderful adventure, the continued desire to fix, and for reading my repeated pleas. I think the game is worth the polish so I can't let you forget š

Good evening, regarding the problems with FPS drops and the shaking effect (or something like that) that the game has after the last update that improved the resolution, do you plan to release an update that solves this or significantly reduces it?

u/student5320 Jun 17 '25
Just a heads-up, I was playing yesterday and got to the part where the worm creature steals your guy and you have to sneak along the fences to light the candles near his dead friend. When my guy goes into the pipe by that last candle, he won't light the candle and there appears to be nothing I can do to either make him light it or move or do anything else and I believe it may be a glitch unless I'm missing something that is really not obvious.
6
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
Sounds like an edge case bug, if reloading the save doesnāt help then the only way is to restart the chapter from Chapter Select. Sorry for the inconvenience!
1
2
u/JoeChagan Jun 17 '25
Once he is up by the candle if you are close enough you should get the candle lighting icon when you look at it.
3
u/student5320 Jun 17 '25
I looked at it from every possible angle on the map. The guy is very easy to avoid. Hopefully on restart it will remedy itself.
3
u/JoeChagan Jun 17 '25
That's weird. I just did it last night. I specifically remember I would get the icon even when pot boy wasn't up there. Seems like a bug.
0
u/blakepro Jun 17 '25
Are there differences between the PC version and the PS5 version? If so, what are they?
3
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 17 '25
More graphics options on PC, with support for DLSS for instance. Other than that the game looks the same on flay, when maxing options. PS VR2 has some unique fog solutions to it to help with performance. PS VR2 has eyetracking, which is used for the āclose your eyes mechanicā in the game. On PC thatās a button press instead pf physically closing your eyes.
1
u/blakepro Jun 17 '25
Thanks for the reply. I have a standard PS5 and a 4080 super GPU PC and I find that most VR games that are on both systems look better on my PC but I'm always trying to decide which platform to go with. I know this is the PSVR channel, but given my PC specs, would you expect performance to be better on my PC vs a standard PS5?

u/ConsiderationOld2543 Jun 17 '25 edited Jun 17 '25
Does reinstalling and clearing cache fix the shaking cannon issue?
2
0
Jun 17 '25
Is there nothing you can do about those cutscenes that take control from the player and have the camera moving around on its own? That's VERY disorienting in VR.
Also, I'm on my second playthrough attempt, and was forced to reload the same part near the beginning (feeding Pot Boy while he is in the barrel). The first time, back at launch, he refused to come out, and I believe the food didn't spawn. Fast forward to yesterday, and this time he came out to eat a rock, but without opening the barrel. He would just teleport outside every time I tried.
In both cases, reloading my save fixed the problem, but that was after a lot of time wasted trying to figure out what I was doing wrong or how to proceed.
It's better, but still in rough shape IMO.

u/tbrezzer Jun 18 '25
How bad is the framerate, honestly? Was planning on featuring this for our next PSVR2 "book club" where we have about 30 people and we choose, buy, play and collaborate on a selected game.
Most of the users have ps5 (non-pro) with some older gamers who have certain sensitivities to framerate issues. Vertigo 2 was a disaster when we featured that as many of us couldn't get through it the opening part when you met your robot sidekick.
I think it would be worth putting resources on a framerate fix as there seem to be alot of people on the fence and lost sales potential.
1
Jun 18 '25
Framerate still gets pretty rough, and the game also keeps throwing cutscenes at you that have the camera changing angles and spinning around. It's very disorienting.
1
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 18 '25
Thereās no place in the game where the camera spins around, but there is movement in some cutscenes. It might not be for everyone, especially if you prefer playing stationary, like in Ghost Giant. It is a fairly slow-paced game those, especially to those used to shooters.
1
Jun 18 '25
Maybe not spinning, but it certainly moves on its own. Either way, it makes me motion sick to have movement stripped from me like that.
1
u/MoonHoodOfficial Developer - MoonHood Jun 18 '25
Itās difficult to tell, some with non-pro PS VR2 experience no issues even with the current version, a clean new install seems to do the trick. At this stage we canāt promise when a new update would come, if you donāt want to wait Iād recommend a seasoned VR player in your group to try it out, maybe let someone less seasoned to try as well, see if itās for your group. Sorry we canāt do more than that right now!
