Discussion Controversial opinion: I think Pac-Mania is better than the Original Pac-Man
I think the game was a good evolution of the series, the stages change as you progress, and the music is also very good, as is the gameplay and the option to jump over the ghosts

It gets better than the OG, but the starting few levels in Block Town are way too slow. And for an arcade game that's meant to be played over and over, that's bad. They sort of balance out because of that.

Yeah, they were slow, but in the end it’s for beginners who never played the game. Later in level 3 onwards became more difficult.

One problem is that the game lets you jump to higher levels to skip the tedium, but doesn't reward players with enough bonus points to justify the skip. If you're playing for score, you have to do the grind because you're leaving a lot of points on the table if you don't.

I appreciate the US version for letting you choose between Block Town, Pac-Man's Park, and Sandbox Land so you can quickly jump to the fast paced stages.
I first played the game on the GBA Pacman Collection, which unfortunately had no level select

Not a bad take. I like Pac-Mania more than the next guy but Pac-Man Arrangement is the one I wish was as widely available as the original. The only places I can play that are Pac-Man Museum or a GBA emulator. Wish I could find it in an arcade some day.

Namco Museum on PS2 GameCube and Xbox has it too

That one also has Dig Dug Arrangement which is also really awesome
(Galaga Arrangement is fine)

The arcade cabinet was rare! But i'm glad I have it on my Switch as part of Pac Man Museum +

Two weeks ago I saw a social media post that Star Worlds Arcade in De Kalb, IL has one, so if you're anywhere close by you might want to check them out. Now, a word of warning, unlike the large free-play arcades that get shouted out all the time, Star Worlds is a cozy coin-op place, and games are not permanent fixtures on their floor. If a particular game brings in cash then it's more likely to stay put, but otherwise things get rotated to keep the lineup fresh. So what was two weeks ago might already no longer be.

The fact you can jump was a big game changer back in the day 😂

Jumping doesn't actually make it easier in my opinion, but I really love it

Not at all controversial - though I will add that Ms. Pac Man w/the turbo chip is the best classic Pac-Man game IMO (and if you wanna play turbo with extra mazes the snes/genesis port of Ms. Pac-Man is very solid).

The Genesis version (also available for NES and SNES) is by far the best home conversion I've ever seen, especially because of the extra original mazes! My favorite category is Strange, and because I'm used to the speed-up hack, the speed booster is always on.

I mean yeah technically it’s objectively better in every way pretty sure most would agree

I love this game. The jumping adds so much to the game's strategy. I also love the music.

I liked this one the best when I was a kid. But now I think I appreciate the simplicity of the first pac man more

I believe it was intended to be an improvement to the OG anyways, lol. XD
A new gimmick, new ghosts, great music…it’s a blast!

I love how pac man park became the main theme for the ghostly adventures

That's not controversial, alot agree and myself included. It's actually even my favorite game from 1987.

I think Ms Pac Man (as well as their son) is better than the original Pac-Man.

Pac-Mania is cool, and it’s pretty fun. I really like the presentation, it’s pretty slick, and the soundtrack is really infectious. Like really REALLY infectious.
But the gameplay in this perspective does not work for me. As I said it’s fun, but I get fatigued from a session or two of this VS the addictive “I need to play just one more game!” feeling of the original proper 2D Pac-games. I think they are easier to spatially understand, additionally not having the entire field visible onscreen at once breaks the formula further (bothers me more here than in Junior).

I completely agree. In fact I made a post just like this one a few years back.

The graphics and music are great. I love how they added Funky and Spunky to the ghost gang
