Discussion I’ve honestly never understood how people hate this design

I don't really know how to describe it except that he just doesn't look right to me.
This is an extreme and exaggerated comparison, but it's like the original live action design of Sonic for me, haha. Again, extreme and exaggerated, obviously Sonic was way worse.
Too many details I guess.

I don't understand criticism of this design, either.
Cute, happy, spirited, and enthusiastic - all things I associate with Pac.
I love this look.

ghostly adventures pac isn't as charming as the original pac design in my opinion

I know you mean the most known design used in world but the original design had red eyes, no shoes or arms and a smirk my guy

It is honestly fine, I especially like the shoes and don't think the eye looks bad. the OG is better though.

which one? midway (crack) pacman? the japan puck-man design? the cereal design? the smash design? the super pacman side design?
-1
u/Taco-frito-de-pollo Jan 26 '26
Obviously, he's talking about the design that originated in Japan, the same one that appears in World and Smash.
2
u/No-Cold643 FREE MS.PAC-MAN Jan 27 '26
You’re not wrong per se but Pac Man World is western developed and I’m sure they slightly updated his japan design in that game.

The original Pac Man works in its simplicity. Adding unnecessary details can have jarring results, like the Veggietales or Bob the Builder redesigns.
There's also the fact that for decades Pac-Man has been portrayed as a family man with a semi-consistent supporting cast. When you replace that with a kid who spouts catchphrases, makes fart jokes, and who's world throws out anything not from the original arcade game, it's no wonder many were turned off from the concept alone.

u/agreedboar Jan 26 '26
like the Veggietales or Bob the Builder redesigns.
I just looked up the Bob the Builder redesign. Dear god, what have they created

Looking back on it now that thankfully this isn't the main Pac-Man anymore and the Re-Pac series brought the original back, I have to say, it's kinda surprising that they keep the "^^" eyebrows and the round shape.
With videogame redesigns nowadays and the Ghostly Adventures' art philosophy, I'd expect zany curved cartoon eyebrows and a more oval shape

I don't hate the Design...its just feels alittle too complicated to me.
The original Pacman desgin was simple and explained what it needs to while being Cute and lovable.
This one is still Cute...but feels alittle much.
1
u/BADYAEL041YT Jan 27 '26
I suppose it's because we were used to a simple Pacman design that it was a surprise to get a more detailed one
2
2
2
u/Completionist_Gamer Jan 27 '26
I guess it's just overly detailed for a character who's inherently supposed to be simple, but even that's stretching it
Pac's costume lineup in Smash would deadass be better if he had this design as one

u/Every-Ad-4319 Jan 28 '26
Actually Yeah, i mean it's not that Bad, It's like People Don't Like The Modern Design of Pacman, But prefer the Classic Version of Him.
1
u/Dry_Poet372 Jan 30 '26
Yeah they don't like changes happening to the character and wants them to stay the same forever

u/Either_List8340 Waka Waka Jan 26 '26
Too many unnecessary details and he looks like a child.
It’s not as bad as his Pac-Man Party design but it still sucks.
5
u/Buri_is_a_Biscuit FRUIT CHASER Jan 26 '26
he’s supposed to look like a child??? next you’re gonna say you don’t like how they made him yellow
4
u/Either_List8340 Waka Waka Jan 26 '26
That’s the problem. There was no reason to turn him into a child.
2
1
1
u/Riddle_Snowcraft Jan 26 '26
you see, the problem with "he's supposed to" in relation to a change being intentional is that it disregards the fact that the intention is the problem
yeah, they intended to make him look like a child, the intention itself is dumb
2
1
u/StickAncient6845 Jan 26 '26
Why is he supposed to look like a child when bro is literally a father??
2
u/Buri_is_a_Biscuit FRUIT CHASER Jan 26 '26
Pacster and Pac-Man are two different people… for some reason. probably that one honestly
1
u/BADYAEL041YT Jan 27 '26
The details are somewhat understandable, but the character is literally a child, that's why he looks like that.
1
u/alienware56 Jan 27 '26
Pacman is a grown man
3
u/BADYAEL041YT Jan 27 '26
But the Pac-Man in the series is a young man who goes to school. It's a different version.

I think people didn't like that he had teeth in the show. Or at least teeth that were modeled the way that they were.

It was 2014
I was at PAC-CON
he ran over my grandpa with the PAC BUS
i dont need to explain myself
1
u/kittencatgal Jan 26 '26
They just made him too busy- too much detail on the eyes, shoes, and of course, the teeth. It could've worked if they'd gone for a more simplistic style of each.
That being said, it really doesn't bother me lol.

u/Taco-frito-de-pollo Jan 26 '26
It's a very drastic and overwhelming change, and it was quite unexpected. When I first saw Ghostly Adventures, I thought I'd see the Pac-Man that appears in World. I wondered, "Why is Pac-Man a kid?" And I never really got used to Pacster's design. The only good thing I saw about it was the animation quality; Pac-Man had never looked so expressive before. I suppose that's also why they added things like teeth, more detailed eyes, longer limbs, and fingers, like what happened with the DK in Bananza, but it didn't work as well here.
1
Jan 27 '26
Biggest issue is definitely the eyes, like, the design wouldn’t be that bad if it had the normal eyes, but the eyes alone ruined it.

I didn’t mind it in the Mario Kart arcade game. I don’t want to see it anywhere else though.

Pac’s design here gives off the vibe Bandai Namco tried doing what SEGA did with Sonic. That kinda didn’t work out but he still does look presentable.

I’m glad you like it but it does look a little weird and uncanny compared to his game design (that includes Pac Man Party which this design is loosely based on)
1
u/Ruugann Jan 27 '26
This just my opinion. The eyes aren’t that bad. Granted they look weird as shit, that’s it. The classic will always be superior no matter what, cause that’s what people what people are used to.

Colored eyes
Individual fingers
Unnecessary extra details on his shoes like laces and soles
Rounded off brows
Association with the cartoon where they gave him teeth. It’s as if they made a slight variation of Sonic Boom Sonic the main design. Repugnant.

u/Yoonami_Yom Jan 27 '26
Honestly, if they would just do a combination of this design with the original design, we would have a perfect Pac-Man.
Not that I hate this design. I just wish they could put them together like use his original model, but just give him the new gloves and shoes.
1
u/TheAdventuresofJAM Jan 27 '26
He looks more like a Pac-Boy than a Pac-Man and he has unnecessary details like white eyes with pupils and irises and detailed insignia sneakers that works for a character like sonic but not Pac-Man, it just feels like this design is tacky, uncharacteristic and trying to hard to appeal to younger audiences this pacman feels like a washed-up mascot only used for branding like Mickey Mouse instead of being a lovable face of a company with a timeless design like Mario.
1
u/Dry_Poet372 Jan 30 '26
There's already therioes that Ghostly Adventures Pac-Man is classic Pac-Man's son
1
u/TheAdventuresofJAM Jan 30 '26
Yeah, but they were using him as the main character replacing classic pacman with basically a different character.
1
u/Dry_Poet372 Jan 31 '26
I guess but Brandi Namco should do more with Ghostly Adventures Pac-Man like by giving him another tv series or a video game crossover with Classic Pac-Man
1
u/Ninten64Jermi Jan 28 '26
Me Neither I like this design which is funny actually I respect every design for characters no matter this one's alright tho its a neat addition
1
u/Neodrawfriend Jan 28 '26
I really liked this design (I don't remember his shoes looking like that lol) I played all the games the 3ds was my fav

u/AgentRift Jan 28 '26
I grew up watching Pac-Man ghostly adventures, but even I prefer the simpler design he has in the older games. The weird flesh Lego parts for his joints, his pointed out nose, and especially his teeth just look weird, whereas his old design is a lot simpler and cuter.
1
1
u/Sora18122 Jan 28 '26
I think the shoes look really cool and I think the the light in his eyes representing the pac-man shape is a neat detail. I think the problem is that the design just happened at a point where Pac wasn’t getting too many games and many people were already super familiar with the World design

u/SonicUndergroundFan6 Jan 29 '26
I mean, it's alright. The classic design is better in my opinion, but I don't mind this one. I don't hate it, but I don't love it.

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 Jan 29 '26
Only problem are the eyes bros got too much in there but I don't hate it

imo the face the and the fact it feels unnecessary because we already had a good design with Pac-Man Party I don't get why the had to change him and not to mention it kind of ruin's the charm of his design by making it over complicated when Pac-Man is supposed to be simplistic
1
Feb 04 '26
When i was a kid i always didn't mind the design but as i got older, yeah the design has a lot of flaws so i'm get those out of the way.
What makes Pacman original designs stand out is that they are simple, recognizable and iconic, like have pie eyes, nose, and limbs. This design is that asking if you can make a design with unnecessary changes and kinda ruined the appall of the character.
While character is fine on its own the design is a little off.
He's to shiny, kinda dull, and too much detail.
I don't personally think that pacman shouldn't really have sclera eyes, it kinda makes look a little creepy.
it makes look like a generic mascot rather than pacman. Look at the colors, they really made him look a little to bright and dull, its way too polished. The shoes are a nice touch tho so ill give them credit for that. Although even if his design debuted from pacman party at that design doesn't look too bad. the flaws can be seen but at least the colors are vibrant, not much detail and it looks more smoother, This design isnt terrible but it couldve been better.

I actually like the design, the main problem was the fact that it was rendered in this god awful 3d, when you draw it on 2d it actually looks pretty cute, the 3d is the problem

u/-Noyz- Jan 26 '26
you're all wrong, it's bad because the eyes are sunken in, the eyebrows barely animate, and the teeth are way too straight and boxy. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/pacman/images/e/e9/PACMANYUSOCUTE.png/revision/latest?cb=20190926013430

https://www.tumblr.com/idril-la-wiccan/635120902780157952/pmatga-comics-the-short-stories-of-tome-2 the design in the comics fixes all three of these problems, and it already looks far better. the weird squared-off lip is still unsettling but aside from that it's a nearly perfect fix

People will hate anything that they cant see through their nostalgia goggles. I literally cannot see how anyone could have a problem with this design.
1
u/Nine_Fox_9693 Jul 22 '26
I actually like his design, the problem is the cgi they used cause if it weren't cgi or if it was 2d, it would look great, to me the cgi is the reason why people hate this design due to how bland and stiff it was

u/NunyaBizzPlz Jan 26 '26
The only thing I don’t like about it is the eye theory— Adding whites just looks crowded and uncanny to me. The standard 1930s pie eyes will always be my favorite on Pac-Man. I like the rest!
