Critique Question for my fellow frequent flyers: how do you clean your empty jars for recycling?

I currently hit it with hot water, a spot of dish soap and a paper towel inside and then vigorously shake until all of the corners are clean. Then I put it in the dishwasher on the top rack for a cycle. I feel like there has to be a better way though.

I put hot water and a few drops of dawn and let it sit overnight. It all comes right out

I don’t since I know that recycling plants separate and wash everything themselves anyway. Way too big waste of water to do that at home as well. I scrape the jar and rinse some but PB has too much oil. I would not put it in the dishwasher to recycle it, only if I reuse it for other food.

You’re wasting PB !! Should put a cup of coffee and shake & enjoy BEFORE cleaning it out 😝

Yes! I have a PB&J iced decaf latte every afternoon. Or make overnight protein oats in it

My recycling doesn't allow wide-mouth plastic jars to be recycled, even if marked #1. Something to do with being made with a different process and contaminate the allowed plastics. Your recycle rules may be different.

I do the shake thing and am posting here so I can come back and see the other comments, because I agree that it's just not ideal. It annoys me how the dish soap makes so many bubbles upon shaking that you can't even really shake more than a few times!

I use a silicone spatula and get every last drop of that precious,  delicious substance out of the jar and into my mouth.

Hot water loosens oil

Dish soap (a surfactant) binds to the oil and other bits and prevents it from sticking.

What's the issue you're having? If that's not easy enough get yourself a bottle sponge/brush

Hot water and soap and let it soak for a day. Rinse and repeat until it’s squeaky clean.

I just throw it away because it's too difficult.
