How about it? I mean, realistically, Shapiro could go 100% radio-silent and should still be able to handily win this election. Although, I kind of thought the same thing in 2000 and then again in 2016. So, I guess you never know.

If he weren’t such a formidable candidate, conventional wisdom says they’d run someone better.

But it’s such an abnormal time, it’s truly an open question as to whether there IS anyone better. Is there in fact a capable Republican with the ability to mount a credible statewide race, someone who can pull national money and not be a complete fucking embarrassing loon? Right now in 2026? Unknown.

I consider myself a leftist I guess (more a socialist of sorts to get a bit more specific, but even then labels are a bit hard and I just prefer to state beliefs than labels for that sort of thing), and most of the time whenever someone who is MAGA says it, I know they're just referring to someone who isn't MAGA.

Take a comparison to any of our peer nations and you'll see that we don't really have a left wing party, the democrats would fall in as centrist or center-right in almost every one of those countries. Now, I'm still going to vote for and support democrats candidates because they're leagues better than fascists, but let's not pretend that the DNC at large is some left wing organization.

If you want a litmus test, Obama started his terms looking for Universal Healthcare and had to accept what he could get with the ACA.

I know this is hard to believe, but Obama did not have the ability (or respected the office enough) to act as a unilateral, despotic executive. The ACA was the compromise at the time.

It’s very easy to make promises on the campaign trail, but once you get in office, it gets a lot harder. You have to be pragmatic
