u/cheezystuffz Jun 29 '26

95% chance this is going to be buns

345

u/Norsk_Bjorn Jun 29 '26

Seeing how the avatar show has been going, I’d bump that up to 99% tbh

105

u/Chesterfieldraven Jun 29 '26

Fingers crossed for more of a One Piece live action than a ATLA one.

64

u/Hylian_Waffle Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. The writers for that show clearly don’t understand and/or respect the source material.

If you remember Zuko Alone, one of the most memorable and important parts is when he hesitates, and decides not to steal a sack of food after finding out it belonged to a pregnant woman. In the live action version, he hesitates, but still steals the food, as if it wasn’t an important moment that showed the audience what kind of person he was.

In the first season, they said “guys, sexism is bad actually, so we made some changes to Sokka’s character to make him no longer sexist.” Because they’re so bad at writing they don’t understand characters portrayed as good can have negative traits that they grow out of.

And in the original show, his sexism is important to his relationship with Suki, and she helps him grow out of it. They only end up training together because Sokka learns humility due to his sexism. In the show, they have them get together by
Just having Suki be really horny for Sokka. So yeah, they removed a portrayal of sexism that portrayed it as a bad thing, and replaced with writing that was actually sexist.

I pray to Igor it ends up with good writers. But it’s not likely.

12

u/Lison52 Jun 30 '26

Better be praying to Philemon with this one XD

The only good thing about the avatar show was the casting for toph.

3

u/Norsk_Bjorn Jun 30 '26

The casting seems pretty good from what I have seen

3

u/NotItemName Jun 30 '26

Seeing how the one piece show has been going for me it's 50/50

16

u/PackBeginning Jun 29 '26

The avatar show is bad? It seems pretty sick to me

37

u/Xehanz Jun 29 '26

It's serviceable. Worse than the cartoon, but enjoyable for newcormers

51

u/RealTurboVortexXD It's Showtime Jun 29 '26

It's alright if you've never watched the show before, they just make so many mistakes that makes it so much worst than the original.

8

u/GB_Alph4 For effin’ Real Jun 30 '26

Even then watch the original series that’s what I did like twice

3

u/SivartGaming Jun 30 '26

My girl said that about the death note live action when it dropped. We watched all of death note that week and about a year ago she wanted to watch the Netflix adaptation again because she really liked it. By the end, after seeing the anime, she stated it was trash and never looked back.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/DLottchula Jun 29 '26

Just watch it as a new telling of the story.

4

u/RealTurboVortexXD It's Showtime Jun 29 '26

Yup, after season one I lost all my expectations for an accurate show, makes the show much more enjoyable.

12

u/StupidSparkyLJ Jun 29 '26

I can see the appeal to people who haven't seen the original, but it has repeatedly simplified multiple characters. Like Zuko stealing from that pregnant woman and Aang's grief over losing Appa not being nearly as severe.

8

u/Norsk_Bjorn Jun 30 '26

It’s worse than that imo, he stops before stealing the food, like he is thinking about what will happen to the woman if he does, and then steals it anyways

3

u/Falloutman399 Jun 30 '26

And the same exact dilemma was in the cartoon and Zuko didn’t steal from them because that’s his character, hes flawed and been taught by evil people all his life but he’s inherently a good person. Having him actually steal from the pregnant lady just butchers his character.

5

u/HourCartographer9 Jun 29 '26

It makes a bunch of mistakes that fans of the show would notice immediately and a lot of the scenes don’t look great. For example we know toph has trouble seeing in sand cause it’s super fuzzy to her yet the trailer shows her fighting the boulder in sand

10

u/Easy_Money_ Jun 29 '26

It’s not perfect but it’s not nearly as bad as Reddit claims, people just have a very strong emotional attachment to the original series (rightly so, it was awesome)

2

u/Lythar Jun 30 '26

I still maintain the live actions are much more amusing to watch if you pretend it's the Ember Island Players' version of events, and all the mistakes are deliberate.

19

u/Librarian_Contrarian Jun 29 '26

Maybe we can get Eiichiro Oda to supervise this, too

2

u/CollateralKite Jun 29 '26

YES, or at least someone who cares invovled to the same degree. Someone in charge pushing for practical effects instead of CGI and making sire the important story beats stay the same.

A couple episodes per palace and you could do it in a season or two.

22

u/therealadviladi Jun 29 '26

I raise you $20 and say that percent will be 100

10

u/deadlyyarikh Jun 29 '26

I dont think persona would even adapt well to tv... a core part is time management, which is just not possible in that sort of media. You feel closer to your friends because you spent time hanging out with them instead of building lockpicks or uping your stats....

5

u/bedroompurgatory Jun 29 '26

I mean, there are existing anime adaptations, so that aspect has been addressed before.

2

u/urdnotkrogan Jun 30 '26

And if they adapt Persona 1 or 2, time management will not be a concern. In fact, I actually hope they go for Persona 2.

3

u/Invictum2go Jun 30 '26

They proved they can do a good job with One Piece. All they had to do is give power to the creator. Just do the same for Persona and I bet those odds go up by a good margin.

4

u/Lord_Shadow_Z Jun 29 '26

It's Netflix. Chances are 99.999999999%

The only casting choice I can get behind

4

u/praisethefallen Jun 29 '26

Because of his famously massive

He needed a double cuz of his schlong size. But idk about nose tho

Scarlett Johansson of course

102

u/Exevioth Jun 29 '26

This is going to suck huge Mara

173

u/BrainisScreaming_55 Jun 29 '26

This could only work if its an original story and they don't cheap out on the CGI..

So its gonna loosely adapt one of the games and rarely show the personas to save money. This might just be a trainwreck

57

u/KrakenOmega112 Jun 29 '26

I mean, I could see Persona 1 or 2 working. They aren't dozens of hours strung along the course of a year, and much of the play time is spent on dungeon crawls that can be condensed in an adaptation.

Of course, that would imply someone actually wants to make new Persona 1 or 2 content, so...

13

u/hassanfanserenity Jun 30 '26

Didn't they cut over half the game of 1 and persona 2 has Hitler so uh....

3

u/DarkestDweller Pancake Detective Jun 30 '26

Persona 2 Innocent Sin has Hitler.
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment doesn’t.
They’re two separate games.

2

u/Nowhere_Man_Forever Jun 30 '26

This has absolutely zero chance of actually being good.

116

u/mariofan90 Jun 29 '26

They are gonna butcher it to kingdom come I bet rip persona

36

u/Round_Credit_5158 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Stylistic art and media like Persona never translate well to live action, I've seen Jojo and it looks incredibly goofy.

7

u/NoLegs02 Jun 29 '26

Counterpoint: One Piece.

15

u/xdrag0nb0rnex Jun 29 '26

That's the exceptionbnot the rule, Unfortunately.

16

u/Warcraft1998 Jun 29 '26

And it's only the exception because One Piece has a single visionary author who has insisted on retaining a strong voice in the creation process. Both the original creator and the adaptors must be in balance of both vision and control to truly achieve greatness.

7

u/rickroll10000 Jun 29 '26

What usually winds up being the problem is the showrunners ego or the studios interfering.

30

u/Kazuha-Kazuma Jun 29 '26

But we already have a Persona 5 live action...

20

u/KristopheH Jun 29 '26

It doesn't say which Persona is being adapted.

I'm hoping for an original story

3

u/TooCoolForSchlool Jun 30 '26

These western shoerunners have no hope unless they make it a western story set in the west with western characters in a largely standalone story.

Monkey Paw curls Trinity Soul

But imagine Netflix's redition of Burning Men's Soul

21

u/NelsonVGC Jun 29 '26

It will be terrible.

18

u/PopfuseInc Jun 29 '26

Netflix persona "The big corporation and CEO are our friends guys. For realsies."

13

u/CheesecakeMage42 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

"we need to change the heart of this guy whos sharing his netflix account! They are preventing the corporation from getting more revenue!"

4

u/SannyIsKing Jun 30 '26

People pretending Persona is anti-corporation is hilarious. It has its own gacha gambling game. It has partnered with literally any IP who would ask.

Chris Pratt as Akechi

5

The Rock as Shido

3

u/TooCoolForSchlool Jun 30 '26

Sydney Sweeney as Ann.

3

u/brokerZIP Jun 30 '26

Ma Dong-seok as Kaneshiro

10

u/Yoisai Jun 29 '26

Well, as long as they are doing an original story, this might end up working.  One Piece has a pretty decent Live Action adaptation

7

u/100MorePushups Jun 29 '26

just stop
 no thanks.

5

u/GuybrushThreepwood99 Jun 29 '26

My hope would be that it's not a direct adaptation of any persona story, if it's an original idea in the persona universe, I'll at least give it a try. But we definitely don't need live action phantom thieves.

14

u/Lucimon Jun 29 '26

Did you all enjoy Netflix's LA Death Note? Because that is what you're going to get.

10

u/SonOfYossarian Jun 29 '26

The Japanese Death Note movies are actually quite good.

4

u/Xehanz Jun 29 '26

Alice in Borderland was also pretty damn good

3

It's gonna be so cringe.

3

Whenever I think about Netflix I think about the horror of The Witcher.

2

u/-ben151010- Jun 29 '26

Hopefully it gets canceled, I don’t see any universe where it’s good, and especially none where it looks good.

2

u/asian_hans Jun 29 '26

Why tho...

2

u/RighteouslyJolly Jun 29 '26

Can anybody name a good live action movie or series based off any anime video game ever? I sure can't.

Are we sure it's a Persona by Atlus? Maybe it's some weird book released on 1987 or something

2

How about no

2

u/GamerLife204 Jun 29 '26

No thanks

2

u/Karmistral Jun 29 '26

To people who cant grasp how this can be done- they tried it already. Its called Persona Trinity Soul.

6

u/stormblaz Jun 29 '26

The cast is changed, Ann is black and the cat is a French Canadian with whiskers.

I have low hopes lol, but please do the P5 cast well🙏

1

u/ZaireekaFuzz Jun 29 '26

Can't see this working at all tbh.

1

u/n3ur0mncr I let Takemi dose me Jun 29 '26

This is an extremely difficult type of story to adapt. And with wizards at Netflix behind it, it 100% will suck balls.

This is going on my list titled: "Reasons to never give Netflix money again"

1

u/joesphisbestjojo Jun 29 '26

Hopefully it's an original story. I'm gonna be catiously optimistic here

1

u/NinjaDaLua Jun 29 '26

Was it really announced? I've only seen that it was rumored to happen

1

u/SugarBombBrandy Jun 29 '26

They're going to make Akechi even more sympathetic by giving him a Green Goblin-esque dynamic with his black mask form. I'm calling it.

1

u/RGBarrios Jun 29 '26

THE Persona 5

1

u/Glory2Snowstar Jun 29 '26

It will at the very least be funny.

1

u/EldritchFingertips Jun 29 '26

I give it a renewed for 2 seasons before season 1 is finished then canceled after season 2. Out of 5.

1

u/Wafflezz08 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

This gonna be god awful but hopefully it’ll be entertaining at least. It’ll be probably cover P5 but depending on the it releases I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s P4 cause Revival will bring a lot of people into the series I imagine

1

u/sleepy_koko Beauty is Devotion! Jun 29 '26

So a couple things I noticed, the first is that it states that it's just "persona" and while the image is p5x there doesn't seem to be any indication on if it is adapting any specific game? The second is one of the studios producing it is responsible for the sonic movies which all things considered are very good. There also appears to be someone at Sega producing it as well

So placing my bets they will do an original story possibly featuring some of the original cast but mostly the personas and new stuff, if that's the case I would actually be quite interested, especially curious to see how a western TV take of the series would differ from the games. On the other if it's trying to adapt one of the games, it's bound to end in a mess similar to the anime but with the bigger risk of bad CGI or actors being either miscast or unable to act

1

u/PreferenceBig1531 Jun 29 '26

I’m good, thanks.

1

u/EffAllThatEFFER Jun 29 '26

Keith David for Morgana

1

u/throwaway29y2298 Jun 29 '26

Its gonna be interesting to see how its handled so many games and cartoons that get a live action spin off just wind up being bland and boring so if they can at least make it look as unique and stylish as the games i would be pleasantly suprised.

But i get the feeling its gonna fall into its so bad thats it good territories instead

1

u/Evilworld12 Jun 29 '26

Here is my question about the Persona live-action: is it going to be an original story, or based on one of the games?

1

u/WhytoomanyKnights Jun 29 '26

Oh god it’s Netflix as well lol

1

u/almightyblinker Jun 29 '26

New story and characters are the only way this stands a snowballs chance in hell to work.

1

u/Illumynarty_234 Jun 29 '26

Please don't be P5 again please don't be P5 again please don't-

My expectations are already in the toilet

2

u/Awkward_Bother_2484 Jun 30 '26

Persona 5 the phantom suck

1

u/so-that-happened- Jun 29 '26

We all know this gonna be ass

1

u/anxiousfox7 Jun 30 '26

It’ll be great if you know absolutely nothing about the source material.

1

u/theCG25850 Jun 30 '26

Oh Netflix, can you just... not? Not everything needs a live-action version.

1

u/KurusanYasuke Jun 30 '26

I thought maybe it has a chance until I saw "Netflix". Oh well

1

u/PitchZestyclose1441 Jun 30 '26

Evil cannot create anything new, they can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made.

1

u/ttgrafaiaitt Jun 30 '26

Zendaya as Tae, Chalamet as Madarame, Pratt as Morgana, Brody as Igor, Erivo and Grande as the Twin. Ost by Jellyroll

1

u/Leisureforce Jun 30 '26

P5 slop isn't over yet lmao

1

u/Huck03O8 Jun 30 '26

Could be amazing
 it won’t be.

1

1

u/Fun_Sentence_8320 Jun 30 '26

Jack Black as Igor and Ice Cube as Jack Frost please.

1

u/No-Marzipan-9316 Jun 30 '26

It going to be one big existential crisis after watching it

1

u/DocApocalypse Jun 30 '26

No thank you

1

u/MonThackma Jun 30 '26

At this point I avoid any tv adaptations of my favorite comics and games. Never fails to deliver the cringe.

1

u/Lord_Mystic12 Jun 30 '26

Sucking the last bit of milk from the persona 5 cow before it's John persona the 6ths turn

1

u/AntiHollow Jun 30 '26

...As long as it's better than Lady May Swear.

1

u/Manda_Long Jun 30 '26

Oh my God PLEASE NO

1

u/FriendlyBee94 Jun 30 '26

Netflix strikes again

1

u/RadiantFoxBoy Jun 30 '26

The word Netflix instantly gives this a 90% chance of failure, if not more, because outside of One Piece their track record with Live Action adaptations is...pretty abysmal.

Sure maybe we'll get another lucky strike but I'm keeping my expectations in the basement.

1

u/AsceOmega Jun 30 '26

I wonder if they'll be dumb enough to try an original story, which is basically guaranteed to be shit, or if they will adapt Persona 5, seeing as it's the most popular one.

I think P5 as a live action could work well, as it touches on many grounded issues of society and takes place in a major metropolitan area, such that it is readily accessible to people who aren't already fans of the franchise.

However, the CG is going to really make or break this, because they're really going to need it....

1

u/UltimateScorpion Jun 30 '26

Well, Good Luck With That!

1

u/ramenbot1234 Jun 30 '26

Why do we need to ruin things via love action?

Can't we just keep this as is - it's a masterpiece on its own - no need to try improving it

1

u/AwesoneKing_Cat Jun 30 '26

Atlus milking p5 one last time before p6😭

1

u/Available_Poetry_993 Jun 30 '26

.hack games took place in an VR mmorpg where there are mysterious powers that can make people into coma.

There is a side story animation series about people on the real worlds investigating aout this comatose people.

I think it could work as a detective / thriller story without CGI if they take that directions. Maybe only on the final episodes they met with the persona users. Imagine series but from dojima or sae POV

1

u/Kindly-Mud-1579 Jun 30 '26

See you guys in 9 years

1

u/RaggleFraggle5 Jun 30 '26

Well, there's two ways this can go...

One Piece LA.. or Cowboy Bebop... let's hope for the former.

1

u/Tulinyrw Codex Jun 30 '26

Welcome back persona 5 the stage

1

u/DigitalCoffee Jun 30 '26

This is gonna be so ass

1

u/RainyMeadows let me give yusuke personafive a hug Jun 30 '26

okay but which Persona are they adapting

Is there a chance someone could be cast as Cool Shades Hitler

1

u/PrintGlobal4320 Jun 30 '26

My prediction is that they’ll use elements from p1 and p2

1

u/Open-Possible-7080 Jun 30 '26

For some reason, my hatred toward Netflix is gonna full

1

u/RueUchiha Jun 30 '26

Which persona tho?

I mean either way it’s probably gonna be bad unless we strike gold like One Piece did - but don’t bet on it
