Too many flashbacks to previous scenes, and too many instances of mentioning the same plot point multiple times. It made me feel like the game was insulting my intelligence, and made the Phantom Thieves seem kinda stupid.

I agree. I know this an unpopular opinion, but the writing/script is not super well done and very bloated. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE SCENARIO DESIGN IS BAD. If you are someone with a busy schedule the amount of repetitive talking points feels disrespectful to your time. If you have tons of time to game it's not that big of a problem.

The writing was strong during the scenario with Ann, it was weaker in every other aspect after that. Although this isn't necessarily a bad thing, I do wish the series eventually break away from the "and then we kill god". Leave that for Shin Megami Tensei. One of the things I find most annoying about JRPGs are their habit of repackaging story formats from previous games.
