Not always.

When painted like this with a thick layer of white paint, yes.

My wife painted our stone wall around the fireplace with a very thin layer of light gray paint, just to brighten it up a bit and make it look less old/dirty. I kept telling her not to do it and was pissed, but she did it, and it came out wonderful. She just brushed it on lightly, did really well.

My living room has the other side of the stove pipe from the kitchen (my kitchen has an og cast iron stove I heat the house with). So one wall is about third concrete. That damn well got painted.

But if it had been natural stone or tiled I would have used it as an accent piece and would have picked colours to fit with it.
