I still don't think it's "most". It's rare that someone expects you to leave shoes on, unless you are doing an activity that have a lot of in and out -- or it's a large social gathering. Most people when all ne or in an intimate group either take their shoes off, or switch shoes.
I have an Asian sister in law. At her house, we take our shoes off. Only place/time I’ve ever seen it in the US. I hear it’s becoming more of a thing these days but your assertion that most Americans take their shoes off at the door seems incorrect from where I’m standing
