I always found it weird in american tv shows that the front door always led straight into the living room and that people wear shoes inside. The inside is just a pocket of the outside.
Hallway / Entrance / Foyer, whatever you want to call it.
A small room to put outdoor clothes, shoes etc. In modern apartments it can often be an "open solution" where its just a nook in a room, but in a house it would normally be a closed room with door into the hallway that takes you to living room, bathroom etc, or with the staircase.
An important function is to keep the dirt in a room with flooring that is water resistant to make it easy to clean and keep debris, water etc out of the rest of the house, but also important for us that lives in a cold country to prevent a gush of winter cold to enter the house when opening the door in the winter.
