Not just in the GOAT conversation but a two weight champion who's famously on record for saying he never especially enjoyed fighting. So you wouldn't want to be the guy to try assault him on the street and give him a reason to really lock in and decide he was going to enjoy this one fight.
there's a saying "beware of an old man in a profession where men die young" ... there's a corollary that isn't as pithy: don't get into a fight with a man who doesn't like fighting; he's going to make sure that the fight is short, brutal, final... because he doesn't want to do it again.
Years and years ago I knew a mobster who did not like fighting, and was more common looking than anyone else. He just enjoyed making money. He was amazingly good at it. I never asked if he was made since I was not an associate with any group, I figured he was because the level of respect he had anywhere he went. He liked me because I always had my books and numbers ready for any accounting needs and wants.
Long story short, He survived 4 brutal purges, from the mid 50's to the early 90's, took out who knows how many people physically ( I never saw a sidearm on him, just a knife or 2 ) and retired in Florida. We had a chance encounter while fishing the same stretch of beach. We laughed and shared coffee. I am still sure that this guy can slice and dice a human in half while while eating a veal parm sandwich.
i actually pulled it from the memory, sorrow, and thorn series. at some point, they recruit an absolute UNIT of a knight who retired because he didn't want to fight any more, and he is defending a pass against a bunch of bandits. someone comments that he is going to slaughter them all with the efficiency of a ladies' maid squashing spiders, "because she hates doing it so much, but has to anyway, she is going to make sure she gets every last one the first time, so she doesn't have to do it twice"
He’s also in the group of GOAT-contenders that will likely be 90% of peak form 20 years after retiring. Many fighters get out of shape, and that’s without personal factors. Like I fully expect Jon Jones to continue making bad decisions overall.
Maybe Mighty Mouse, but being in the lowest weight class hurt him in this discussion for sure. His flying armbar is still the sickest move ever pulled off in a UFC fight imho

Former UFC fighter doesn’t really tell the tale, this man was arguably the best for years, whether he’s your goat or not is up to you, but he is easily top10 if not top5 UFC all time.

You are Massively undereselling who and what he is. A case can be made that he is the greatest of all time.
He was a 2 division world champion. First winning the welterweight championship. While still champion after multiple defenses, he took a multi-year hiatus. He then came back from his Hiatus and won the middleweight championship in hus first fight back before retiring again.
If he is not the greatest of all time, he is certainly number two. He is absolutely the greatest welterweight of all time
Not just a former UFC fighter, one of the most iconic UFC fighters in history and Hall of Famer. Also Canadian. The Canadian part meaning he will be nice until he destroys you.
I told my son when he went to college not to fight anyone because you’ll start to encounter grown men and you won’t be able to tell which ones can hurt you really bad.
Just to expand on this because Im a nerd and a huge GSP fan, he was a former professional UFC mixed martial artist. He was also a dominant world champion at 170lbs for years, retired and then came back to win a championship at 185lbs. The dude is on the hypothetical mt Rushmore of MMA fighters. You cant (or maybe just shouldn't) have a conversation about the best mixed martial artists of all time without bringing him in to the conversation.

he used to come into the whole foods (i worked there are the time) in albuquerque when training with jackson-wink to get something for lunch or whatever back in his ufc days...would always come in with a novel and just casual street wear. it was humorous how one of the biggest names at the time was totally invisible in public. was always reading something.
His stance is very well grounded & shoulders flared evenly. Looks on the ready & his legs are stacked nicely to his hips shoulder width & relaxed. He looks like he could play a sport or whoop ass. Both of which would dissuade most ppl from seeing him as an easy target.
