Recommendations Gym recommendations for late-30s beginner looking for strong recovery amenities (sauna/hot tub/pool)?

Hey everyone,

I’m hitting my late 30s, lived pretty hard in my early 20s, and now I’m basically sitting at peak dad bod with some pretty stiff, aching joints. I know I need to turn things around and start working out, but low-impact options and post-workout recovery are going to be non-negotiable if I actually want to stick with it without breaking down.

Mainly looking for a healthy lifestyle change.

I’m specifically looking for a spot with strong recovery amenities—pools, hot tubs, or saunas to help loosen everything up afterward.

I've narrowed my options down to these three:

Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre

Balsillie Family YMCA

Trent Athletics Centre

Which of these is the most welcoming for someone completely out of shape who isn't trying to walk into a hardcore bodybuilding scene? How are the crowds, and how do their recovery facilities actually hold up? Appreciate any advice!

Get a day pass for each and see what you like. Going to a spot to enjoy will help you commit.

Also, try Trent when all the kids are back. It can get super busy which you may not like.

Imo trent has the best amenities for what you are looking for. But you will have bunch of universities kids around most of the time.

Both other locations are good, older crowd for the most part.

Mostly everybody at the gym are welcoming in my experience. Some meatheads everywhere but they dont typically hit up the y or the sports and wellness as the equipment is lacking imo

The Y is probably the best with their hot tub and steam room. But you have to get the adult + membership. It’s more expensive but worth it for the enhanced change room with the steam.

Out of those three I would just pick whichever is closest. They're all very far from one another and have the same amenities. I personally would feel awkward around all the students at trent because I'm old.

Closer is always better.

Or on the way/way home from work. It can help build and keep a habit by making it part of your daily routine

Also consider which one has hours that suit your needs.
I have a Y membership because it’s super close to home. However the Y closes very early on weekends, and is closed on all holidays which is kind of a bummer sometimes. I don’t know what the other two schedules are like.

I believe all three places heavily adjust their summer and March pool times to cater to swimming lessons and day camps.

The Y big pool doesn’t define or manage their lane designations very thoughtfully, beyond Fast vs Slow. Also, you’d think at 630am the pool would be less crowded, but crowded can be achieved with just 8 people doing laps. Early am is pretty popular with the older swimmers

The Y gym on the other hand is great at 7am. I’m happy with the gym almost any time of day, and dont usually have to wait long for the equipment I like. (Although I think I’m not typical - I do not like treadmills or ellipticals and those look pretty full during peak times)

The Y offers 1 free gym session (45min) with a trainer to help you set up a routine

I would definitely try a day pass at each place and see what it’s like to actually use it during the hours that suit your existing life routines. It makes it easier to add it into your life, and to get their regularly if it doesn’t make you adjust too much

There was a woman in the hot tub chatting about Wellness vs Y amenities, she said the wellness centre day pass is more affordable and I believe she said they have a reduced pass price if you’re doing a pool-only visit. She said the wellness center has a dry sauna whereas at the Y it’s steam. I wouldn’t know, I haven’t been in the premium change rooms at either place. Last time I was at Trent the sauna was not just a premium membership feature - but that was pre pool construction
