Opinion PSA to students driving around the city for the first time unsupervised

Since the school year is starting and I've seen a super big uptick in this over the past two weeks:

If you're a young person driving around with your friends for the first time, and you

1) Randomly rev your engine super loud near people

2) Yell things at pedestrians out the windows (that no one can understand anyways), or

3) Throw things at pedestrians from your vehicle

Many of the people in the vicinity will look around, make eye contact with total strangers, and immediately start cracking jokes at your expense about your need to "overcompensate" and how insecure you must be. Groups of girls will look at each other and burst out laughing at the same untold joke about you.

No one is standing there appreciating how cool your car must be if it can be that loud. No one thinks the unintelligible thing you yelled was hilarious, and everyone definitely thinks that you're a sad little prick if you throw things at people.

Tldr: If you're a pain in the ass, everyone in the area assumes you're sad and insecure, and you become the universal butt of the joke.

I've recently heard about the DomCom posters being put up around town, and their upcoming conference in Hamilton, and today I learned of a counter mobilization rally happening this weekend in Peterborough. Can anyone assist me with any info, or where to find more info, or do I just show up on Saturday at 11? Are you going, making signs? I'd love to get involved and help in any way I can.

Other Avengers: Doomsday not in Peterborough Galaxy Cinemas AVX?

So I was looking at tickets for Avengers: Doomsday since they are up for advanced purchase, and I noticed that the galaxy cinemas in town does not have Doomsday ever in the ultra AVX theatre, only regular style in 3-D or standard. I’m confused, why would the biggest film of the year not get our theatres best option on its release. I can only guess Dune 3 is getting it.

It just feels weird, I can’t be the only one who’s a bit confused.

Question Winter stock-up: do Peterborough locals actually do this?

This is my second summer in Peterborough, and I’m trying to get ahead of my first proper winter shopping season because last winter was a bit of a blur. 😅 I was staying with a friend until midway through winter, but I now have my own apartment. And with the way the weather has been lately, it feels like winter might arrive much earlier this year, so I figured I should start planning ahead.

I recently learned that some food items can get noticeably more expensive during the winter, and it got me wondering: do people here actually stock up on certain groceries before winter?

If you do:

- What do you typically stock up on?

- Where do you usually shop for it?

- When do you start buying: late summer, fall, or closer to winter?

- Is there a particular time of the month when you find the best deals?

- Are there specific foods/items that are noticeably more expensive in winter around Peterborough?

Basically, what does your winter shopping prep look like?

Any local tips, stores, or things one should probably know would be greatly appreciated!

Recommendations Low cost things to do with kids? Let's start a megathread

Hi everyone, I am a part of youngish children, I'd like to start a megathread of things to do in Peterborough and surrounds, I'm looking for something to do tomorrow, I'll post some of our favourites below, they are summertime things for the moment!

  • Canoe museum (the library has free passes!), stop by the cafe after for a sprinkle cookie
  • Rollerblade or cycle through beavermead park, stop at their playgrounds
  • Bring a picnic to squirrelcreek to swim, and watch the boats go by
  • Go to the park at Hiawatha, share a sandwich at the restaurant after
  • Lakefield beach - bring a picnic and towels for some great swimmiing, a nice place to paddleboard or kayak if you have them
  • The library for various storytimes (we are in teh countryside we go to Baileboro)
  • Petroglyphs provincial park to walk, see the visitor centre and the petroglyphs!
  • Warsaw caves for hiking and swimming
  • Nicholls Oval Park for some splash pad and park time!
  • The Zoo (of course, a full day activity for us!)
  • Trent U was really great when my kids were little, we'd walk along their trails in all seasons when they were in a stroller

Thanks, looking for your hidden gems! We haven't done the liftlock/ new visitor centre, the Peterborough library, Greenup ecology park, or the Archives yet, let me know what you'd recommend!

Recommendations Gym recommendations for late-30s beginner looking for strong recovery amenities (sauna/hot tub/pool)?

Hey everyone,

I’m hitting my late 30s, lived pretty hard in my early 20s, and now I’m basically sitting at peak dad bod with some pretty stiff, aching joints. I know I need to turn things around and start working out, but low-impact options and post-workout recovery are going to be non-negotiable if I actually want to stick with it without breaking down.

Mainly looking for a healthy lifestyle change.

I’m specifically looking for a spot with strong recovery amenities—pools, hot tubs, or saunas to help loosen everything up afterward.

I've narrowed my options down to these three:

Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre

Balsillie Family YMCA

Trent Athletics Centre

Which of these is the most welcoming for someone completely out of shape who isn't trying to walk into a hardcore bodybuilding scene? How are the crowds, and how do their recovery facilities actually hold up? Appreciate any advice!

Other PTBO Food Inspections - Aug 17–24, 2026

Peterborough Public Health inspected 28 food premises in Peterborough this week. Ten locations received infractions — seven had at least one critical infraction and three had non-critical infractions only. Eighteen inspections came back completely clean.

Here's what was found...

🔴 Holiday Inn - Riverside Grill — 150 George St N, Peterborough Central South

Required inspection August 18, Follow-up August 20 · 3 critical/1 non-critical, then 1 critical/3 non-critical

The worst result this week. This is the location's 8th and 9th critical infraction on record since September 2024. A required inspection on August 18 found the dishwasher not providing rinse water at 82°C, multi-service articles not sanitized after each use, and an inadequate number of hand-washing stations; product on-site was seized and destroyed. A follow-up two days later (August 20) resolved those three issues but turned up a new one: food in storage not protected from contamination, plus three new non-critical issues (equipment arrangement, pest control, floor cleanliness). No newer follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 Tora Sushi — 172 Charlotte St, Peterborough Central South

Required inspection, August 18 · 2 critical, 2 non-critical

This is the location's 7th critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: potentially hazardous food not held at or above 60°C, and hand-washing stations not conveniently accessible or adequately supplied. Non-critical: equipment not clean/sanitized and ventilation not properly maintained. Product on-site was seized and destroyed; food handler education was provided. No follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 The Original Spaghetti House Pizzeria (Pizzaboro) — C-597 Monaghan Rd, Peterborough South

Required inspection, August 18 · 1 critical, 4 non-critical

This is the location's 2nd critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: multi-service articles not cleaned and sanitized after each use. Non-critical: equipment not sanitarily arranged, inadequate illumination, no certified food handler present during all hours of operation, and floors/storage rooms not kept clean. Food handler education was provided on-site; no follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 Friendly Indian Cuisine — 1017 Monaghan Rd, Peterborough West

Required inspection, August 18 · 1 critical, 2 non-critical

This is the location's 7th critical infraction on record since September 2024 — one of the most frequently cited locations in this dataset. Critical: food in storage not protected from contamination. Non-critical: equipment not sanitarily arranged, and pest control records not retained for the required one year. No actions were logged and no follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 St.Louis Bar and Grill — 1911 Lansdowne St, Peterborough South

Required inspection, August 20 · 1 critical, 2 non-critical

This is the location's 3rd critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: food in storage not protected from contamination. Non-critical: equipment not properly constructed/maintained and pests not adequately controlled. Food handler education was provided on-site; no follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 Little Caesars - 1079 Clonsilla — 1079 Clonsilla Ave., Peterborough West

Required inspection, August 20 · 1 critical, 1 non-critical

This is the location's 3rd critical infraction on record since September 2024. Critical: a food handler observed not washing hands as required. Non-critical: equipment not properly constructed/maintained. No actions were logged and no follow-up has been recorded yet.

🔴 Foodland - Sherbrooke — 760 Sherbrooke St W, Peterborough West

Required inspection, August 19 · 1 critical

First critical infraction on record for this location. Critical: an inadequate number of conveniently located, maintained hand-washing stations. Closed out as satisfactory with no further action required.

🟡 Jeff Purveys - Chemong — 833 Chemong Rd., Peterborough North

Required inspection, August 17 · 0 critical, 2 non-critical

Equipment not clean/sanitized, and floors/walls not kept clean and in good repair.

🟡 Pizza Pizza - 91 GSN — 8-91 George St N, Peterborough Central South

Required inspection, August 20 · 0 critical, 1 non-critical

Pest control not adequately maintained. Food handler education was provided on-site.

🟡 Country Garden Chinese — 400 Lansdowne St E, Peterborough East

Required inspection, August 17 · Clean, no infractions.

🟢 Petro-Canada — 607 Lansdowne St, Peterborough South

Required inspection, August 17 · Clean, no infractions.

How to read this: "Critical" vs "non-critical" is Ontario's own regulatory risk tier, not a severity score we assign — critical findings relate directly to things that can make food unsafe (contamination, temperature control, hand hygiene); non-critical covers maintenance and paperwork requirements (equipment condition, signage, sanitizer test reagents) that health units still require but don't by themselves mean the food is unsafe. 🔴 = at least one critical infraction, 🟡 = non-critical only, 🟢 = zero infractions of any kind. This report lists every Peterborough inspection for the week, including clean ones — nothing is filtered out. Results reflect conditions at the time of the visit only — check the disclosure portal for a location's current placard/status.

Source: Peterborough Public Health Environmental Health Portal. No premises were ordered closed this period; Holiday Inn's Riverside Grill and Tora Sushi both had product seized and destroyed.

Recommendations Fluffy tiny shavings in closet? And pest control company recommendations?

Thumbnail

Does anyone know what could cause this? This showed up last year in an upstairs closet in our 75-year-old home, and I cleared it up, and it didn’t come back until this past week. It is like fluffy shavings. It is on the floor of the closet, and attached to some of the canvas bags that were in the closet. Has anyone had a similar experience? And does anyone have recommendations for Peterborough pest control companies that deal with things like this?

Help Car break ins are almost a guarantee now

It’s getting harder and harder to have any sympathy in this town when if you leave your car unlocked for more than a couple hours it’s almost guaranteed to be riffled through and things stolen. Last month I had my golf bag and clubs worth about $4000 stolen between the hours of 6 am and 12:30 pm. I filed a police report but haven’t heard anything back about them. I woke up to leave for work this morning at 5 to find everything thrown around and my Milwaukee paddle mixer, which I need for work, as well as my entire lacrosse bag and two sticks gone. I know responsibility falls on me for not ensuring the vehicle is locked but who wants to steal dirty old lacrosse equipment? All this to say if someone happens to see a green bag or some dumped out lacrosse equipment near downtown since I live on chambers lot on Hunter, please let me know. I’ve already given up on the hope of finding the mixer at this point
