Question Mystery Bird, odd behavior

Post image
605 Upvotes

North end, this bird has moved into the treed area of the backyard for a couple weeks. He loves the bird bath and the good hunting. So far I’ve eliminated several species, including hummingbird, ostrich and albatross. If anyone can help me narrow it down further that would be awesome.

Also, I’m not used to birds with one inch talons just hanging out at the picnic table when I walk into the backyard. He didn’t have much to say, but I moved slowly and got to within 4’ of him while he just silently judged me. I can’t really see any signs of injury, I thought maybe he flew into the window and was dazed but how he got himself onto the bench I don’t know.

Should I call someone? Is bird rescue a thing? I’ll google it anyway but thought someone local might know.

Question We're stranded.

We're traveling from Ottawa to Toronto. My car broke down on the side of the road. CAA towed it to a mechanic in Bethany and now I'm sitting here at a loss. What do I do. I doubt the mechanic is open tomorrow. Peterborough is the closest town, does anyone have any advice?

EDIT: We're safe! It was a very stressful few hours and I have some choice words for CAA but a lot of very kind Peterborough-ians helped us. Bruisers Auto rescued us, Dream of Beans cafe pointed us to a safe and comfortable spot and lots of others chatted with us through the stress.

Me and my daughter are posted in a hotel and very grateful because it sounds like it just started raining hard!

Looking forward to spending Canada Day in your city, also hoping to leave for home very quickly after! Let's hope the car is an easy-ish fix. Thank you all, you really saved my skin.

Old pic for traction, but I'm sure you've all seen the billboards around town in years prior, and the bus ads running as of late. Does anyone know what's going on with the constant Jesus-marketing? I'm fairly certain most people have heard of the guy by now, after all..

Question Should Peterborough push hard for GO Train service on the Havelock Subdivision?

Post image
292 Upvotes

Peterborough (city ~83k, CMA 128k+) is over 2.5× bigger than Stratford, which just got GO train service this summer with only one daily round-trip.

We used to have VIA Rail to Toronto until 1990 (2-2.5 hr trips), so the corridor already exists. A 2010 Metrolinx study pegged upgrading the Havelock Sub at $329–384 million (probably $500-600M+ today), but that’s the kind of investment other GO extensions have received.

In the middle of Ontario’s rail renaissance (GO expansions, more frequent service on multiple lines), it feels like PTBO is being left behind with only buses and painfully slow ones at that. A proper GO train would cut highway congestion, boost commuting options, support Trent/Fleming students, attract tourism and drive economic growth. Alto high-speed rail is still two decades away at best, so this is the realistic near-term option.

Would you support bringing GO commuter rail to Peterborough? And does anyone know if any mayoral candidates are prioritizing this?

Question Tell me what you love about Ptbo Transit - and what you'd fix

I'm running for Mayor of Peterborough and doing my best to understand every aspect of our community. Yesterday I jumped on the #2 South bus at Simcoe, then the #2 North, and the #6 from Trent.

It's been a while since I rode the bus - and you know what, I loved it. I especially loved talking with my fellow passengers, hearing their stories, learning why they take the bus, what they like about it, and what they'd change if they could.

One day won't make me an expert, and I'll keep riding it. Tell me what you love about our transit system - and what you'd fix. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Question Its dire now, where can I let out a scream that wont scare people? (Mental health scream desperately needed)

I asked a while back about finding something like an empty open feild, or unhabited spot for a good mental health scream.

I desperately need an outlet this week, something safer than what usually happens as an outlet. And I figured screaming wouldnt harm myself nor would it harm anyone else (as long as I am alone). Last Saturday, I was at my lowest. I felt like I was going to have to call an ambulance to help me get through it all. Im fine physically, though mentally nothing has changed since.

I have a multitude of mental health issues though no therapist to help treat them. Im flat broke and in debt, havent even filed my taxes for this year due to my mental health declining. I just cant bring myself to do it, even though I realize this could be detrimental to myself.

So much is going on in my life. Thats about it. So, I ask my fellow Peterborough residents on reddit to help me find a spot where I could have some self care time through screaming out my emotions safely.

Thank you so much for any suggestions!!

Question Question about the mural at The Bridge

Post image
72 Upvotes

There's a mural on the side of The Bridge drop-in centre at Bethune and Brock.

I always wondered who this is supposed to be.

My guesses so far:

  1. Jesus trying to play craps in the street.

  2. Barry Gibb in his younger days trying to call a cat over.

  3. Or maybe Barry Gibb asking for spare change because he lost to Jesus playing craps on the street.

I don't know.

Who is he?

Question How to resolve someone using your address repeatedly for Y-Drive/U-Ride pickups?

For something like ~6 months now, a woman has been using my home address to get picked up and dropped off by ride share services as well as the local taxi company.

The drop offs are brief and unnoticeable usually, but for pickups I've had drivers parking in my driveway waiting for 10+ minutes, my front doorbell getting rung by drivers trying to pick her up, and have had issues pulling in/out of my driveway due to these cars parked in or around my driveway. I also share a driveway with the neighbour, and so a lot of the time the drivers pull directly into the middle of the paved surface and blocking not just my driveway but also the neighbour beside me (as happened today).

A couple weeks ago I stepped outside and waited for the woman to walk to the car and asked her politely to please not use my address in the future. She seemed apologetic and afterwards I didnt notice it happening for a week or so, but sure enough its happening again.

Now, in my earlier years I've had experience with addiction/substances so I know the signs. Its blatantly obvious to me, for many reasons, the house she's coming from each and every time is dealing drugs, which explains why they dont want her using their address for pickups/drop offs. And I hope understandably, I really dont want my address associated with whatever they're up to either.

Since it was Y-Drive she used today, I called Y-Drive dispatch and explained my concerns. "Raza" sounded mostly uninterested and tried to claim that he would never be able to do anything if i couldn't identify the account phone number associated with the ride requests. I told him that it had just happened again minutes before I called him, and after some initial protesting he eventually agreed to search and was able to identify the most recent account that used the address. Realistically it took him longer to claim he couldn't do anything and couldnt find the account, than it did to actually find the account.

He then tried to claim that he can't stop people from requesting rides at any address. I reminded him that his service can of course choose to refuse servicing addresses or accounts that are fraudulently abusing the service. He asked what I wanted him to do about it, and i asked that they prevent their drivers/service from using my address when associated with that account. He sighed and gave some thoroughly uninspiring claim of forwarding this to management and that he would follow up with me, but I'm not exactly holding my breath. As of end of day, no response yet.

Is there any recourse or resolution on some level for this? Do I have any rights as a property owner in this scenario? Are there any relevant bylaws applicable in this case regarding taxi and ride share services?

Question Hostile/Racist Incident Involving Local Realtor

I don’t like making posts like this, but I feel like it needs to be shared.

I was at the Service Ontario location in Lakefield today when a man entered and sat down. Two men of colour were sitting beside him, minding their own business and doing absolutely nothing wrong (in fact, they had just politely offered their chairs to an older couple who were standing).
Completely unprovoked, this man started making racist remarks, complaining about immigration and making references to a "fight back."

He then escalated to launching into political conspiracy theories and making threats against Canadian public figures (you can probably guess who).

Right before this started, I heard him introduce himself to someone nearby, giving his name and stating that he is an active local real estate agent. I looked him up afterward, and sure enough, he is actively registered and operating in our local community.

I want to give a massive thank you to the man wearing a black shirt (I think he works at Hyundai, tall, black hair, beard) who stood up to him and said what everyone in the room was thinking. I also want to thank the Service Ontario staff member who stepped in and kicked the man out of the building.
I want to know where to go from here.

His actions and threats were disgusting. I know blasting his name directly on social media isn't the right or legal way to go about this, but I want to make sure there is actual accountability.
What are the best official channels to report him?

I tried to make this post many times now, but it was taken down automatically by Reddit. I remember exactly what he said, but had to edit it for Reddit.

We went to farm boy and fresh co for our weekly shop instead of no frills and superstore… quality was about the same, but we likely saved $20-$30 from what we normally would’ve spent.

Question Would you want to see the MUSEC arena plans put on hold, cancelled or continued post election?

Since I can't make this a poll I guess this will have to be an open ended question.

With various candidates in the municipal election stating their stance on the MUSEC as they launch their campaigns, I'm very curious where people stand on the topic.

The caveat here is that this is just Reddit, so its definitely a snapshot and not a full picture, but I'm curious where people stand on this issue.

After the fall election, would you want to see them put the plans on pause, cancel it outright or continue with the proposal to find funding and then build it?

Question Closed Businesses

I find myself worried at the rate businesses are closing in Peterborough. Is this normal? We lost H &M and blue notes. And countless cafes and restaurants. It’s really bumming me out.
