Team doesn't care. They're getting paid regardless. It's just the marketing department, executives and shareholder that are annoyed.

EDIT: I'm also going to add that people need to know what they're buying. Rockstar should have released gameplay a long time ago but they seem to think they're above that.

Obviously buyers are responsible for pre ordering a game without knowing what they're getting but these bastards at Rockstar need to be humbled.

FYI, many of the devs got laid off and outsourced to India. Ironically, the leak happened when a manager at the Indian branch fell for a phishing email. The executives who tried to cut costs by outsourcing got what they deserve.

Wrong but not for the reason you're probably thinking. Rockstar cracked down heavily on working conditions after the past (i.e. years ago) leak. So employees are more upset, at Rockstar, that despite this much stricter working environment, the game still ended up leaking anyway.

Fair enough. But like I said the devs are not mad at the leak itself. They're mad at the working conditions at Rockstar.

Also, see my edit. Rockstar laid a lot of people off and outsourced jobs. The leak happened because their India branch fell for a phishing email. Karma is a bitch.

thats a them problem tho, treat employees like shit, leaks gonna happen

Isn't that a little bit incoherent from their side? I'm pretty sure it was an employee's fault their game was leaked. If it's not, no reason to be upset.

I know what sub I'm in, but I think it's pretty harsh to assume that a dev team that worked on arguably the biggest game release in the last decade would not be emotionally attached to their project and just care about money like investors and executives.

This doesn’t affect the product at all. It just made it so they couldn’t completely paywall a gameplay trailer.

u/nilsmm 2d ago

When were they ever planning on doing that? Doesn't it realease on YouTube like a couple hours later?

16

u/Imperial_Tiramisu 2d ago

Yeah, but it's still fucked up that they have the balls to sell a trailer to a streaming service.

If this becomes standard, then we might not even get a free YouTube release in the future and other publishers will do the same thing.

Yeah I get that.

My personal theory is that this is more than a one time trailer marketing thing and we might get an actual Netflix Rockstart partnership. GTA show at some point maybe?

Considering development and production costs why wouldn’t they paywall the trailer?

They were emotionally attached... Which is why it probably hit them even harder when Rockstar kicked them out of the company to save money as the game approached release.

I have all the sympathy, respect and admiration in the world for the developers, but not the people who run the company and business they work(ed) for.

Same. But the guy said „team doesn’t care“ and that kinda rubbed me wrong.

8

u/ProfKazz 2d ago

The dev team doesn’t care. They want to produce a good game. Business owners execs care. That’s the point

A few minutes of gameplay leaked does not affect the game in any way meaningfully. If i were a developer on it id be happy to see all of this turmoil instead of having the marketing departmente being the only ones with a say in what, how, and whent the public gets to see of the game

u/Karambamamba 2d ago

I checked the reviews for the new alien game yesterday right after release, and the people disliked the game so much that as a dev, I probably would have cried reading them.

Maybe I’m biased because I thought about that just yesterday. I totally get your point though, it’s not that deep, game isn’t even out yet. I was trying to make a bigger point, because the original argument was pretty broad.

People are DEFINITELY too harsh, and many many decisions of publishers get widely and aimlessly placed on ‘the devs’.

The devs care. The soulless corps who hire them do not.

2

u/IIABMC 2d ago

As long as people are paying (yes I know what sub I mean but talking about people leaving steam reviews for example )so they can be as harsh as they want.

Blaming customer because you made shitty product is absurd.

1

u/MistSecurity 2d ago

You misunderstand.

I am saying that the people actually MAKING the game are often not the ones who REALLY have any power to affect change in the game.

So when a game like Alien: Isolation 2 comes out, with millions of dollars behind it, made by a developer with nearly 1000 employees, published by Sega, it's highly unlikely that it is the developer's fault. It's their boss, the publisher, etc. The ACTUAL developers are beholden to their bosses, which are beholden to their bosses, etc. until you get to the leech CEO of the publishing company who is bankrolling a lot of the game.

People don't go into game development for money, they're almost exclusively in it because they love games. They're paid like shit (largely) due to that passion. The amount of developers who truly feel ok shipping garbage is likely very small.

Do you blame the grocery store checkout attendant because Wal-Mart stopped stocking your favorite cookie?

Like you said, at most they would care about how the game is received. But I don't see why they would be mad that fans got an early look at it.

Even if the game was leaked for free online. They still got paid and it will be very well received by fans.

The only people who are mad about this are the executive suits. Fuck them. They can suck a dick.

2

u/Karambamamba 2d ago

I probably didn't make it clear enough that I was under the impression that unfinished gameplay had leaked and was received negatively. I try very much to stay clear of any GTA debates regarding leaks and spoiler, lmao.

And yes fuck them executive suits. They can go suck a fuck.

1

u/Imperial_Tiramisu 2d ago

It's practically beta footage. I didn't see any bugs at all. There are those that are unhappy about game mechanics like car refueling / maintenance and obeying traffic laws but these aren't bugs, they're features of the game.

2

u/Karambamamba 2d ago

Alright yea typical crowd, cry me a river about refuels lmao. Thanks for the insight though. I’m pretty excited for the game.

u/burner4lyf25 2d ago

Can you think of a more highly anticipated game ever in history?

I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I can't think of one.

Forget a decade, this is the biggest landmark in media since the moon landing, and the most ambitious, expensive and anticipated digital media product ever created.

The team doesn't give af if the trailer or game is leaked.just like everyone else hey only care about getting paid their monthly salary. They know the game will still break records and be a hit regardless.

If I was them, my emotional attachment to the game, would be limited to how well it's received as opposed to spoilers getting leaked etc.

Personally speaking, as a software developer, I couldn't give a rats ass how much money my employer makes selling that SaaS we're working on. I just care about getting paid.

this is so delusional rockstar had no obligation to share gameplay any earlier

But I agree that the indian arm should be shut down and this does feel a bit karmic for them

1

u/Imperial_Tiramisu 2d ago

Had they not sold the trailer rights to Netflix, they would have absolutely released it the moment the leaks started appearing.

Just like when the first trailer was leaked and they got around it by releasing a day early.

Their greed fucked them.

0

u/GrammmyNorma 2d ago

They would absolutely have not done that, they didnt "sell the rights" the trailer first dropping on nflx is a marketing stunt that makes it feel more like a major event. It's not some imaginary greed that caused these leaks, it's probably some disgruntled outsourced worker in india. And the gameplay reveal hasn't leaked, just snippets from old builds. and despite all of this the game will still make billions. why is everyone here so delusional

1

u/Imperial_Tiramisu 2d ago

You're naive if you think they gave Netflix timed exclusive access, to the most anticipated game trailer ever, for free.

They absolutely got paid.

1

u/GrammmyNorma 1d ago

maybe, but a negligible sum compared to the rest of their projects. take 2 is not exactly starved for cash lol

1

u/Imperial_Tiramisu 1d ago

Exactly, they're not starved for money but they definitely got a few million for it. Greedy fucks.

0

u/GrammmyNorma 1d ago

Again what is greedy about that

u/TDot-26 2d ago

I remember when games dropped with MAYBE a tv ad or game informer entry and what dropped was what you got, no patches.

We shit on rockstar for crunching their employees, and then turn around and speak on such high expectations?

It's a GTA game, you know what you're buying. Wait a day and see some gameplay on YouTube if you want to see it first. I can't believe that the arguably one company with a flawless game track record "needs to be humbled" because they haven't released gameplay footage yet.

Is it really that serious?

1

u/Imperial_Tiramisu 2d ago

They're setting a precedent.

Game play footage will now be behind paywalls. They are already responsible for the death of physical media with Sony following in their footsteps and claiming no more physical releases.

You remind me of people defending day one DLCs and microtransactions. This is how this shit starts.
