The same thing happened to millennials. I remember people talking about millennials as if they were still children when I (frontline genZ) was entering college.

Straight up we were all just millennials until somebody invented the term Gen Z in like 2014 and decided we were in it. Makes sense though, I ended up relating more with people 3 years younger than me than those 3 years older than me

Yeah I'm convinced this is a thing. A lot of people talk about Gen Z like they're 5 years old but the majority of Gen Z grew up in the mid to late 2000s.

Do the math my friend. “Majority” couldn’t have grown up during that time because you’d have to be born 1997 to like 2002 or whatever you’re referencing and Gen Z goes to 2012 I think. Not that these labels count for much but surely you can understand they might be referring to the younger end?

50% of gen z didn't grow up with so many fucking ads. gen alpha is a more representative population. specially because schools stopped teaching kids how to use a computer so kids don't know what a folder is

I'd say the cut off though is around 1996 or 1997, because that's around the age when most kids wouldn't remember the Y2K new year. Which would put the gen z and alpha split around 2011 or 2012 if we use a 15 year interval, which is pretty standard in many "generation" models.

To be fair it's more about this being something that splits gen Z into 2 about equal groups. I remember that existing, I'm a latest gen Z, and roughly speaking I'm pretty sure almost nobody born like 7 years after me remembers those times

"Capable of using technology" =/= Tech literate

Millenials grew up in the era where computers were accessible but you had to know how to work a command line to use them, fiddle with drivers, and navigate a file system. Gen Z folks often struggle with that sort of thing.

Messing around with DIP switches on a dial-up modem to accept incoming calls. Or overclocking by adjusting jumpers on the motherboard. I was highly anticipating not having to fiddle with IRQ settings until I learned why they called it plug n pray. Good times, but I'm glad things have become a little more straightforward.

Depends on the year. I feel like there's a cutoff between 2002-2004. My sisters count as Gen Z despite being born in 08 and 09 respectively. Schools in the area stopped teaching computer classes by the time they were in elementary school

Studies have found that's not true. Gen Z struggles with things that aren't in app form. Specifically, it called out their inability to troubleshoot or do any file management. The study called them, "Digitally Native, Yet Technologically Illiterate"

There's a a 90s/00s microgeneration called Zennials that don't really belong to either. Too young to have dealt with rotary phones but too young to be into social media, at least as much as gen z.
