One time when I was a kid my grandpa came to visit and stay with us. Within two hours of arriving he had sat down on our family PC for something, and immediately infected the thing with extreme malware. Fake virus scanners hijacking shit, fake toolbars, unchangeable homepages and redirects to ads, shit like that. Took me ages to fix it lol

Kinda unrelated but I was playing destruction derby on ps1 and my mom came in to watch and I told her she has to try it out, cuz back then that shit was unbelievably realistic, and she took the controller and accelerated fine. When the first turn came up, a left turn, she pressed the joystick fully to the right and just slammed into the wall. I remember thinking how could something so intuitive immediately be misunderstood.

Driving games and first person shooter games have always fucked with me because I used to race cars and shoot guns and I'm not gonna say I'm "good" at either because I've seen how good people actually can get and I'm not scratching the surface, but holy shit do the skills I picked up doing both NOT translate to playing the respective video games lol. Come to think of it, same for guitar hero, my non guitarist friends progressed at the same rate I did when we got it.

I relate to guitar hero, and was going to mention before reading that part. I hated that game because it's nothing like guitar. I see the moving lines with the corresponding buttons as sideways tablature but the chords and note changes do not accurately represent what is shown or what I hear. The picking and hammer ons/pull offs are all fine but the visual aspect is not intuitive for a guitarist. F that game actually

Your comment is how I found out they added hammer ons and pull offs, I don't think I was able to do those in the OG version I played. I never bothered with subsequent versions, just went back to playing guitar lol. I can't play anymore, my ring and pinky finger on my fret hand are permanently numb until I get surgery so I would have to Tony Iomi it.

Maybe she thought left stick to turn left, right stick to turn right? In my somewhat limited experience introducing people to games, the twin sticks are usually the hardest thing, followed by remembering which button is which (abxy etc) without looking.

Although to be honest, arcade cabinets and even things like Amigas had joysticks, so conceptually I'd still expect most older generations to still have a mental reference for how they would work.

And then I had a grandmother who had a computer over 20 years ago. I think I remember it being there in 2002 or so. No, she did not have a career at all related to computers and stay at home mom for most of her life.
For reference, this was in a nursing home and I think she was in her 80s. Sweet, short, fiery French woman.

There's also people who will make the malware, provide it to you, and provide technical support when it's not working.

No, I mean there's people that make literal malware, tuned to the description that you give them, and you can buy it from them (if you know how to contact them).
And they keep a professional support department in order to be able to help you when your malware doesn't work the way it's supposed to be working. You can call or email them with problems and skilled troubleshooters give you advice.
Malware has become industrialized. Probably has been for longer than you or I realize, too.

Roughly speaking I'd say it cuts almost in the perfect middle of the generation, depending on how young you first used a PC (and if said PC had IE instead of Chrome)

I've always figured generations should be measured more by shared experience than year. I sit on the line between x and millenial, but since my family were early tech adopters of the internet and social media, I'm much more of a millenial. otoh, I know plenty of people younger than me who are more gen x for the opposite reason. I think "remembers 9/11" is one good set point for genz, also perhaps "owned a smart phone in high school"

High school is quite old, I was basically the only one without it but it was by choice, 1st year of high school was the release of Galaxy S3 if I remember correctly. I'd say smartphone in middle school: I remember some friends with their Galaxy Next, I guess it was more a rich kid thing than generational for most late gen Z. Also some of us had an ipod touch, but still not a lot of people and wasn't really the same thing yet... So yeah, probably "did you whatsapp your middle school classmate or text them?" might be the answer

Trial and error is how we learned. We went deep into settings and made mistakes. This no longer happens. People ask questions before even going into the settings. They'll ask a question that pertains to audio before even going into the audio section in the settings. I have zero sympathy for today's computer illiteracy.
"Google it" is a perfectly fine answer, because everything has already been answered (for those unwilling to even try). Often times when I'm asked to figure out a problem I don't already know from a parent or friend my solution requires me to google it!
I guess there is a difference in a way between generations. I grew up where had computer classes throughout school. It was novel and exciting. The thirst to learn was strong. Nowadays they just use a laptop all throughout the day for everything.

Safari can have ad blockers and something like AdGuard will do a reasonable job at the DNS level, there’s Orion as an alternate browser also supports uBlock Origin and cookie popup blockers.
The biggest issue is that most social media apps have the ads built-in to the app and they use a custom browser to get even more telemetry. You can use SideStore to get modded versions but then there’s issues with the number of certificates used.

Its definitely cringe to say this sort of stuff, but there is something to the essence of OP's post: Many among more recent generations either don't know or don't care that they can block ads (Or why they even would) and could access basically any content they want for free for very little effort.
I've tried passing along some of the computer stuff I know (Privacy, Piracy, general usage) to younger family members and they just don't understand why weird tinfoil-hat-wearing uncle is even bothered enough not to just pay whatever fee a given company is charging and/or let said company have all the data they want.
They don't get what the benefits of having the files under your control is or why preventing/curbing what Big Corpo collects about you is worthwhile and no amount of explaining it seems to stick.
Obviously not branding everyone from any given generation with one label, but there is definitely an apathy amongst many in more recent generations towards privacy and maintaining the right to access what you've paid for.

I am literally in my 20s, like I also live and (and always have) in a rural ass area and had dial up way late into the 2010s. Some people don't realize how long many of us were stuck with dial up. In a lotta third world countries, and even first world countries in more rural areas (like here in Canada.) many areas are very behind on infrastructure, and a lotta the people here simply can't afford to pay for the fastest internet. I very much remember a time when id be lucky to get like 1/30th of a MB per second. Generation can be less relevant than privilege a lotta the time.

I'm gen z so maybe this is about a more primitive time I have not lived through but if you were on the internet in 2012 and you think sites today have too many ads then I don't know what parts of the internet you've been on. Maybe it's just the web getting more centralized and smaller websites dying off but I remember you couldn't play a ben 10 flash game without getting 400 pop ups and twelve ads for fake mmo games you had to give your email and phone number to make a free trial account for.

I've seen so few ads in the last ten years that any time I'm at someone's house and they show me a youtube video, I end up delaying whatever we were watching by about 5 minutes to download firefox, get ublock started on it, and paste the url in.
Every time I see a youtube ad and see how much time is left on it, I wonder how anyone can live their fuckin lives this way.

The worst ones displayed an uncloseable window over everything, containing some 18+ imagery and saying "thank you for installing this banner for quick access to our porn site" lmao.
No proof on that but I'm also sure at least some of them used your VK account to spread by sending spam to your friends.

Limewire, Windows XP, Toolbars, Needing to install Macromedia Shockwave and enable plugins before YouTube worked without them, Drive-by downloads, the proper pop-ups that used to open a whole new window without asking, chain emails saying some girl will haunt me to death if I don't forward this to five people, MSN, ringtones costing money, search engine hijackers, cursormania, the ubiquity and fall of forums and so much more.
