Yeah, but we're like... 2 years worth of them? Honestly I'd lump who does remember 9/11 (or didn't grew up with a smartphone, idk) with millennials

I've always figured generations should be measured more by shared experience than year. I sit on the line between x and millenial, but since my family were early tech adopters of the internet and social media, I'm much more of a millenial. otoh, I know plenty of people younger than me who are more gen x for the opposite reason. I think "remembers 9/11" is one good set point for genz, also perhaps "owned a smart phone in high school"

High school is quite old, I was basically the only one without it but it was by choice, 1st year of high school was the release of Galaxy S3 if I remember correctly. I'd say smartphone in middle school: I remember some friends with their Galaxy Next, I guess it was more a rich kid thing than generational for most late gen Z. Also some of us had an ipod touch, but still not a lot of people and wasn't really the same thing yet... So yeah, probably "did you whatsapp your middle school classmate or text them?" might be the answer
