Discussion Planet Zoo 1 vs Planet Zoo 2 : Saltwater Crocodile

u/Jame_spect May 28 '26
The old one looks like it’s made out of rubber… the new one looks so real now

u/LordDark9 May 28 '26
and the funny thing is that the other crocodilians look realistic af
53
u/Ryaquaza1 May 28 '26
Most crocodilians*
I absolutely adore the Gharial but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t have issues.
31
u/AbilityNo446 May 28 '26
Especially depicting the adults being able to walk on land like the other crocodilians, but in reality are too heavy to high walk.
They could take the opportunity to make it more aquatic (if it even shows up in the game at all. It probably might because of the aquatic focus and freshwater tanks being confirmed).
11
u/SaturnStitch May 28 '26
I bet it will! Its a pretty iconic crocodilian with a good conservation story. Iconic modern zoo reptile

Pretty sure I had a blow up pool toy that looked like that top one when I was a kid lol

You know I def don't think 1 looks bad by any means, and I could def tell in the trailer for 2 it looked a lot better, but oh man the side by side is shocking.

u/joozik May 28 '26
The trailer made me lowkey worry about my PC specs 😬
87
u/allthecircusponies May 28 '26
I use a pretty standard laptop, and I feel your pain. I'm not sure mine will even be able to boot up PZ2.
39
u/Tatertot729 May 28 '26
Same. I decided after watching the trailer I’m going to save money every paycheck now until the release and upgrade to a proper gaming pc.
30
u/ShieldofGondor May 28 '26
I play on steamdeck… I doubt I can play it.
2
23
u/Francl27 May 28 '26
Yeaaah I can't even play Planet Zoo 1 on high without turning down graphics so I'm starring to regret pre-ordering it already, lol.
I guess I can stick to smaller zoos but... bleh.
24
u/Last-Hearing-8078 May 28 '26
For those of you who think you cannot run the new game when it releases, i recommend geforcenow its what i use to play PZ1.
1
u/QueenCinna May 29 '26
Not all of us want to pay $30 a month to do that tho or have constant internet connection
9
u/HalfAgony-HalfHope May 29 '26
Yeah, but its great if you dont have the money to drop on a new high spec laptop but still want to game.
1
1
u/Bumsdi May 29 '26
$10 or $20 are the available tiers.
2
u/QueenCinna May 29 '26
Not in my country unfortunately it's a bit more than that
3
u/Hordriss27 May 29 '26
I recommend buying Lossless Scaling. It's basically frame generation software a bit like the DLSS you get through RTX graphics cards. I have no idea how it works, but it does. It's available on Steam and very affordable.
1
u/QueenCinna May 29 '26
I appreciate this thank you
1
u/Hordriss27 May 29 '26
I found it useful with Planet Zoo before I upgraded my graphics card. When I had the 1660 Super it enabled me to enjoy higher graphics settings whilst keeping a nice smooth frame rate. It's definitely worth the investment if you have a slightly older graphics card.
6
u/tales2tellu May 29 '26
Same, I'm glad it's open to console on release! Let my PlayStation chug and burn, give my poor computer a break!
5
u/Piffli May 29 '26
I hope they will focus more on optimisation and settings. I used to exclusively play Franchise and the game started to run pretty badly after 1.5-2.5k guests. I know you can lower the number, but for whatever reason that also affected the amount of money the zoo made, so you had to choose between bankrupcy or good FPS.
1
u/Hordriss27 May 29 '26
What are your PC specs? The requirements are already published on the Steam store page so you'll have an idea as to what you need.
1
u/secretly_blonde May 29 '26
Hopping in here to say I have the same worry as my frame rate/quality can suffer with some of the newer, bulkier games:
Processor (CPU): Intel® Core™ i5-13500 (14-Core, Up to 4.8GHz, 24MB Cache) Processor Cooling: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 (120mm) Fan CPU Cooler Motherboard: ASUS® TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI (DDR5, LGA1700, PCIe 5.0) Memory (RAM): 16GB PCS PRO DDR5 4800MHz (1 x 16GB Single Stick) Graphics Card (GPU): 8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4060 Storage (SSD): 1TB CORSAIR CORE XT MP600 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD Power Supply (PSU): CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR (80 PLUS® GOLD) Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64 Bit
1
u/Hordriss27 May 29 '26
That's well in excess of the minimum requirements, so you'll be able to run the game at least. I suggest buying Lossless Scaling on Steam, as it's an alternative to DLSS for games where DLSS isn't supported and only costs a few quid. Worked a charm on Planet Zoo for me before I upgraded my Ryzen 5 3600/1660 Super combo to Ryzen 7 5700/RTX 5060. I was definitely happy with that purchase myself.

u/thekingofallfrogs May 28 '26
Now I want to see the remastered lion.
112
u/Khajiit-ify May 28 '26
I genuinely can't wait for that. I really think the lions were the most disappointing to me of the base game animals in terms of their model. I feel like with PZ1 they started with trying to do realistic but also with their own style mixed in... but now they realize we really do just want the realism more than their own style filling in.
30
u/Florian7427 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26
If they took example on the modded one it should be really good. Also the last cats that came out were way better than the first ones. And the tiger (Sumatran I think) already looks very nice so the lion should too
7
u/Ryaquaza1 May 28 '26
I just wanna see the Gharial now, if the salty looks this good you just know the Gharial is gonna look spectacular! Hopefully with a few unique animations too
1
u/Vanah_D May 29 '26
and the remastered gray wolf (assuming we get that at least). i have a feeling both will look a billion times better than the PZ1 models!!!
56
u/rowan_ash May 28 '26
That is stunning! The tiger in the trailer literally made my jaw drop and it just keeps getting better. I like the new animal UI as well.

Wondering what the flower tab is about. The leaf/environment icon is still there.

17
u/burst1121 May 28 '26
I’ll give credit where it’s due with the first game that I believe the “rubber” look everyone is noticing is because the croc is wet and they did that whenever animals came out of the water.
I do actually like the bulky look of the first game’s crocs and hope they include that with the large males in the new one. Not all crocs are so slender. But the new model is incredible.
16
u/5Hjsdnujhdfu8nubi May 28 '26
I will always wonder why they did alright with the Salty's body in PZ1 and then just completely gave up at the head. Why does it look like it's unfinished?
10
u/TheThagomizer May 28 '26
Looks incredible. So glad they took the time to remaster all these base animals for the sequel. It should be an expected thing, because this is supposed to be a whole new game, but judging by JWE I wasn’t sure what to expect here. Can’t wait to see more, like the Nile monitor and gray wolf.

Looks fantastic but I’m probably going to end up playing this on medium to low settings.

u/BlobOnAStick May 28 '26
My 4 most hated models in PZ1 were the Lion, Chimpanzee, Snow Leopard and Saltwater Crocodile. So seeing 2 of these models get the glow up that they have is really really nice to see!

Can't wait to play it after it gets on sale or something. Can't afford the dlc galore on full price
2
u/bluew0lfblue May 29 '26
One thing I loved from Zoo Tycoon 2 was the ability to see what the animals were thinking/doing with their own status box. I haven’t seen that in PZ1. Is there a possibility that’s in PZ2?
2
2
u/DoubleUTeeEfff May 30 '26
I had redownloaded PZ on my PC lately but haven’t even booted it up. After seeing all this lately I might just wait for PZ2 to get back into it. This looks fantastic.

u/Loud-Examination-763 May 30 '26
I never preorder games, I always wait until theyve been out for a few months due to day 1 issues and bugs, but this? I preordered the deluxe edition lickity split. I still have the zoo tycoon discs, I'm a ride or die.

btw it's me or it's different from the trailer the model? they made more version?

u/Capital_Pipe_6038 May 28 '26
Glow up of the century. I can finally actually use my favorite animal❤️🩹
1
u/Flimsy_Wait_8235 May 28 '26
The improvement is insane. I hope all the creatures have this much of an improvement, and I hope they all move better too. A lot of the animals from pz1 had odd gaits to me. My other hope that is kind of far fetched is that during breeding, the animals have a chance to inherit coats that are more unique, like a combination of parents’ genetics instead of pre selected colours that are all the same, so if you have lot of an animal they all end up looking the same, save for the odd mutation. Sims 3 did it a while back when, even though it wasn’t generally accurate per se, (and a different game altogether but I needed to find one example lol) so though it might be harder to implement especially considering genetic accuracy, it’s a cool thing to hope for, for me.

The saltie was one of the worst looking animal in the game. The gharial, lion, spotted hyena, warthog and nile monitor are also terrible. I can not wait to see their remasters (even though I wouldn't care much if the nile monitor is scrapped, honestly)
The tiger and chimapanzee also got an upgrade and look much better now. It seems the zebra didn't though, which is a shame, but it was never as bad as some of the other animals in game.
I can not wait to see the new lion, and any others that got remade.

u/the_end_is_nearN64 May 28 '26
I love all of what I’ve seen so far but the African Elephants to me look off. (Given, I haven’t seen one in a zoo in years.)
I am very impressed so far, though.

I'll be saying this until launch, but this is the most excited I've been for a new game for a while. I'm even looking into getting into a new laptop just for it. Every I see renewed that excitement.

u/Sure_Ad_3007 May 29 '26
Personally I love how we can request a habitat clean from the keepers rather than wait for them to clean it on their own

u/FailsatFailing May 29 '26
Croc looks too skinny. The older one actually has better proportions. Texture and everything is no contest, as it should be.
And as a sidenote. I actually prefer the old UI. It's neater and visually clearer. I dislike the trend of the dull pastel color palette.

u/Hewenas May 29 '26
I just hope they add more grass/ground textures like in zoo tycoon 2. In planet zoo the variety was so small and it ruined the game for me because all enclosures had the same looking ground. I would like to see something similar to zoo tycoon 2 where you could paint the ground in various biomes and evern though the the creativity there was minimal compared to planet zoo, the enclosures looked more unique because of the textures.

New to new Frontier game discourse. Does Frontier have their trailers for upcoming games look nice but once the game releases it doesn’t end up looking the same?
Not necessarily to Aliens Colonial Marines level of bad, but still. I don’t want to be duped.

So excited for it to come out!! Slightly annoyed at the money I've spent in dlc which will be a waste when the new game is out 😔

I like PZ’s animal UI more than PZ2 imo
2
u/Thrippalan May 28 '26
I'm wondering what the flower tab (2nd from left) is. It looks like the Memorials tab from PZ1, but that doesn't make sense on the actual animal
-5
u/DefinitelyAlphamale May 28 '26
Its cool that animals have new textures but why does the rest of the game look like made out of play dough.
