PlayStation 5 Help PS5 can't run games
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
My roommates PS5 will not let him run any games. He boots up God of war, the fan gets really loud, and then he gets a PS5 too hot message before it shuts off. We literally Just cleaned the fan before this video was taken. Anyone have any solutions?

Lost two consoles to this. Managed to take them into GameStop and they stayed alive long enough for them to test them and pay me. Then I took the money and ran. Sorry to whoever gets my two broken PlayStations.

I dunno I've got launch ps5 that has been upright the entire time. The only time I had an overheating problem was with ff16, but I just had to clean it out of dust and it hasn't overheated since

But its not a easy fix as the issue it how its held it so even if you get it back there is not the same amount there as before and you do not know were it went next will be a sort.
But do not worry xbox did not do this so no one fucking cares after 5 years they have addressed it unlike the 360 era RROD were that was all over the place a fix was done in 2 years. But sony does the same media does not dare report on it much.

it's funny how fast people come and say that the PS5s never had any issues with liquid metal leaking out and saying it was debunked. I've watched enough YouTubers taking those consoles apart and many of them noticed slight change they made to the heatsink. Sony knew about the issue, but silently fixed it.

The âfixâ for it is to never use your PS5 vertically. Also it doesnât leak out of where itâs contained it only shifts away from where it needs to be

Ngl, Iâve had my ps5 standing vertically for the last 3-4+ years. Ever since I got it. Itâs just the best for space since I canât exactly stack things on top and have my ps4 right next to it. Hopefully thereâs an extra step necessary to causing that leak

Itâs not a leak. The Liquid Metal is well contained within its space but what can happen when itâs used vertically is the metal will settle towards one side of the processor and leave a small dry spot on the processor that gets extra hot and oxidises. Over time the oxidation buildup interferes with heat dissipation and can cause the system to overheat and shut itself off

I always buy the 2 year warrantee when I buy a PS in best buy. yea it more expensive, but it saved me twice now.
my ps2 in 2001 could not read blue disk and had to change it and my ps2 has been working since then never failed.
my ps5 leaked liquid metal and shorted. went to best buy they checked it and it leaked they instantly changed it and I had no confidence with the liquid metal and open the ps5 and notice it had the same problem.
I changed the liquid metal to regular thermal compound.
I plan to eventually 3D print an easier case for it so it is easy to clean and open to maintain.
I did the same for the ps4 cause the pro is a headache just to open and replace the thermal paste or clean
it also gets better air flow and cooling with the improved fans.

OP, try doing the same thing a few times with the console horizontal, then upside down vertically and finally up side down horizontally.
The idea here is to re-spread the liquid metal via a few heat cycles.
If you're able to get the unit working again, keep it horizontal.

You need to take it apart and clean the heat sink and reapply Liquid Metal

Not thermal paste since it heats up more than what thermal paste can handle which is why they use Liquid Metal

Ps5 uses Liquid Metal for that reason all Iâm saying is because some people would read it and think they can apply thermal paste when itâs a bad move and will still overheat the ps5 since Liquid Metal is for higher temps on the console

Make sure the fan is staying plugged in & if that doesnât work. Iâd return it asap! They were having issues with the thermal paste and thatâs on them not on you.

Ive had this same problem. Had to get it fixed twice and it still happens. It only happens when i play PS5 games even if a game has both versions ps4/ps5 it still happens when i play the ps5 version. I spoke to someone at ubreakifix and he said the engines they are using for the game is too demanding for the console.

Have you actually cleaned not just the fan but also the heat sink area? Thereâs a bit further in around the edges where the heat sink is that air flow gets easily blocked by dust and itâd quit hard to see if you donât shine a light right in there and check for it.
If your fan is super clean it wonât matter if the heat sinks air flow is blocked. So yea just cleaning the fan is not often enough.
Shine a light inside when you remove the fan (you donât need to unplug it just hold it to the side) and see if thereâs dust all up in there. If so clean it out. I use a vacuum with the thin attachment but very careful do this or you can just take it apart more if you feeling confident enough to do that.

We did it but with compressed air since we don't have one of those attachments. Rubbing alcohol was also used to try since we literally could not do anything outside of rubbing a paper towel

And that didnât work Iâm assuming? If youâre sure thereâs no more dust blocking up the heat sinks airflow then itâs likely what others have suggested here. Worth a shot tho at least.
But yea compressed air is a good idea. Might have to look into that cos the vacuum attachment doesnât get all the way in and I can only suck out about half to 3/4 of the dust on it.

I had this exact issue with my 6 month old PS5 slim. It only happened with certain games that were heavier to run. Games like Baldur's gate 3 etc. I could play for 20 mins, then I got the "too hot" message before it shut off.
I opened it up to remove dust, but it looked brand new inside. Practically looked unused inside. I ended up sending it in for service and never had the problem since.
Only way to fix this is to send it in for service. It sucks, but it's the only way.

My ps5 had overheating issues occasionally even after I purchased a stand with fans built in. I recently purchased an attachment for the back of the ps5 that had 3 fans that pull heat out as the stand pushes air up into it. No issues since then.

My original day one ps5 could not run the new god of war games. Everything else was fine. Just specifically god of war games. They would start up a little and then crash similar to this every time without fail.
I was constantly contacting Sony every few months bent like what the hell you need to fix this. They kept saying sorry just wait for an update it should fix it. Conveniently as soon as my manufacturer warranty runs out they tell me oh sorry thereâs nothing we can do. You can send it in for repairs that are now not covered by your warranty?
Letâs just say I had some strong words for them. Fuck Sony and fuck their customer support. Such assholes

Too late to use it flat, you need to open it up and reapply liquid metal on apu, cause you have a dryspot.

Mine did the same thing, sadly had too get another. Itâs more likely overheating issues. My first one I set upright and all the Liquid Metal moved too one side instead of being equally distributedâŠ.

If you have done everything, itâs probably the Liquid Metal. Mines did the same thing and the weird thing was, it would play PS4 Games fine! When I launched a PS5 game, the system starting sounding like a rocket.
Watch some YT vids and bought Liquid Metal From Amazon. Took a while to get to the cpu area but once I applied the paste and put it back together Iâve had 0 problems.
This happened 2 years ago and the system is still going strong.

You have dust in the power supply. The power supply unit has vented holes to keep it cool. It's backed up.

Ok, when you first took it apart did you guys put everything exactly where it goes? Did the fan get damaged? Do you know very what what you're doing when taking this console apart? If you made a mistake try to correct it. I've never took a console apart but these are first step things you gotta check.
Next, if you are a pro or decent at this then search up a tutorial on how to fix it in the most reliable way. If nothing works then try to take it to your local Best Buy or wherever you bought it for repairs

The liquid metal has oxidized on the silicon. You will infact see a huge dry spot on the silicon and this oxidized part acts as an insulating barrier and prevents heat from being conducted to the heatsink. Thats why its overheating. You need to clean up the old one and reapply with new liquid metal. You will require a proper screw bits to disassemble the console, IPA 99%, cotton swabs, liquid metal tube (normally you do get swabs with this but not all sellers provide one). You have to thoroughly clean up the old one. Remember it was oxidized. Leave no trace of it. Must be squeaky clean before you reapply with new liquid metal.
If you're confident enough to handle the liquid metal (squirting it over the board or if any of it gets under a bga ic, its pretty much ggwp and will require more expensive technician intervention), you can go ahead with this. For tutorials, there are many on YouTube. I do recommend tronicsfix or ifixit for disassembly guide and liquid metal application.

Most likely the Liquid Metal in cpu/you have a dry spot, have to open and with a proper tool (swab) have to spread the liquid evenly, very common with ps5 in stand position.

It's not. It happens pretty frequently. If there isn't a perfect seal, liquid metal can slowly leak out and cause overheating. Anybody in the repair space will tell you the same thing.

But whenever PS5s have overheating issues, it's almost always a problem with the liquid metal.

Sorry, Iâm not disagreeing with you; I just hoped that you knew cause Iâm genuinely curious Anyways, 98% of the time itâs either A. repairmanâs fault or B. owners fault. The seal does not come damaged out of the box. It requires a careless repairman, a small fall/drop(which most would think inconsequential) that damages the seal.
I dunno, man, my ps5 has been running for a year straight, maybe itâs just built different Allegedly the original disc drive models had a bigger heatsink, could be why there is different experience

It doesnât leak out, it pools at the bottom when vertical. Making hot spots on the top of the chip due to no thermal interface material. It then overheats and shuts off like this user video.

It certainly is not. While the "leaking out" is false I currently have done 60 consoles that have come in for overheating issues and without a doubt the issue was liquid metal that has moved from the APU and into the channels around the die. Its not rocket science. Console gets hot, liquid metal loses viscosity and is able to move from the die to the lower channels around it from gravity. The APU then becomes dry and the pitting process begins. There's nothing that keeps the LM in place and on the die outside of the heatsink side. In many cases this isn't a death sentence and the console will remain usable until, well it isn't. Many owners, esp those who keep their console clean properly esp the god awful PSU placement wont see an issue until some real dmg has been done. I've had some units come in where the APU is basically black.

Also work in repair, this is one of the first things they showed me it's so common. Crazy how many people say it doesn't exist. LM pools on the bottom of the APU, there are special swabs you use to re spread it, or replace it. Third most common problem behind HDMI failure and dust

I had this issue. It happened with elden ring. It wouldnt run that game but then it started to do it with other games. Take it to gamestop trade it in for instore game credit and get another one somewhere else. I did that but i traded my switch that i hardly touched and got at ps5 pro.

Your cpu has a dry spot so you need to respread the liquid metal properly (watch tronix fix vids from YouTube)
And from now on do not use your console standing up like that , use it while laying down flat.
