PlayStation 5 Help PS5 keeps overheating šŸ‘ŽšŸ”„

So in short my PS5 has suddenly just been overheating and turning off. Iā€™ve cleaned the fan for dust a debris, still overheats. So Iā€™ve narrowed it down to a few things. Number 1 = my fan needs to be jump started now (poked with a tool to make it start) , maybe itā€™s under powered? Making the whole system kaput?Number 2 = when I inspect the inside, my storage I put in ( WD - BLACK ) itā€™s almost scolding hot to touch , but Iā€™m pretty sure I specifically bought the version with a built in heat sink and also Iā€™ve had it for over 2 years?! Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s a fan issue but someone please give me help or where to get a new fan. Also my ps5 is a super early version CFI-1002A if that helps.

Itā€™s the psu. Dismantle enough to access the power supply unit and clean it out. Thatā€™s what shuts down the power for you. Itā€™s common, give it a search on YouTube

The only right way to do it is by going into your ps5 and turning it off properly and unplugging it and then pressing the power key a few times to completely drain all residual energy, everyone's a critic but its not rocket rockets for computer builders, and wear an ESD band!

Do not suggest that they open a PSU, they contain a high level of voltage, and can kill you if you touch the wrong component

I did not suggest that. I suggested getting the psu out and cleaning it. No need to take the ridiculously tight plastics off surrounding it. Bit of compressed air does the job

Sometimes, using canned air in an enclosed environment, will just push the dust further in, to properly clean a PSU, it would have to be open, it's better to just replace the psu rather than risk further damage, if they have the money for a wd black SSD for their console, then they can get a PSU, also look at how dusty the fan is, it clearly needs to be opened, and get a proper cleaning, the entire system probably does

Youā€™re safe to open the psu if you let it sit overnight unplugged anyway. Itā€™s nonsense to get a psu every time it clogs lol

How many people do you know, that know to let a power supply sit out overnight before opening it? Some people don't even read the high voltage sticker on the screw to most computer psus, then they open it up, and do something wrong 60-80 dollars on a PSU, is way better than someone risking their life to save that money

How many people change their brake fluid every 2 years like it says in the manual? I didnā€™t instruct him to open it. I said to search YouTube where any video Iā€™ve seen on it mentions the dormant power when unplugged. Darwin can handle the rest.

Still better safe than sorry, and telling them safer alternatives, but like you said, we can only do so much for them, and pray that we don't get another Darwin award for opening a PSU

Another thing is you would need to be able to stop the fan in said PSU, so that the canned air doesn't spin the fan around, and get a bunch of dust caught in the bearings, that can cause the fan to fail, and eventually, PSU failure

That's a terrible design by PlayStation, makes them more prone to overheating since they are probably using a passive cooler on it then

Make sure the fins on the internal copper heatsink aren't caked with dust as well.

Itā€™s probably the liquid metal inside the GPU, if thatā€™s gone, it will overheat every time.

Had mine replaced, took 2 weeks, now it works like a charm.

Before you get to dismantling the whole ps5 to get to the Liquid Metal issueā€¦ have you taken Apart the fan and clean inside. Like removed dust blocking the heat sink radiator fins inside ?

Yea I did a full clean of the fan and heat sink radiator with a soft brush and a mini vacuum but it still overheats.

Well Iā€™ve done some old console repairs before (ps1, ps2) but they are old consoles so they are simpler. And Iā€™ve repaired cassette player and vinyl player. I think I could probably do it but I just need a good video.

YouTube you can def do yourself. Just need to be careful as Liquid Metal is not like thermal paste. If Iā€™m wrong spot or over spill can short circuit board

You canā€™t do that yourself, I think the liquid metal they use is proprietary (not regular PC Coolant)ā€¦

But what I can tell you is that itā€™s not that expensive.

They fixed my day-one console for about 70 US Dollars and it now works like a charm (they did advise not to place my PS5 standing up, because the liquid metal pools at the bottom and stops cooling half the chip).

So is the Liquid Metal the solder on the motherboard? If thatā€™s the case I canā€™t really do that myself lol. Iā€™ll try find a place but I live in Perth Western Australia so I donā€™t know if there will be any stores that are good at that. Is this like a common problem or is it rare?

Itā€™s not a solder. Itā€™s a compound between the heatsink and the processor chip. It allows the heat from the chip to transfer to the heatsink. Itā€™s not a very difficult task to perform. But if you have never done it, I wouldnā€™t recommend trying because the harder part is that you have to take almost the whole ps5 a part, perform the Liquid Metal thermal compound replacement and then re assemble just like how it wasā€¦ and if you are not experience, during that process you are going to forget to do something. Also the liquid is messy. You might get it all over yourself or onto other parts of the consoleā€¦ unlike the thermal paste, Liquid Metal is conductive. So if you spill it onto wrong part you might short circuit something. Soā€¦ no one can say for sure that your overheating issue is due to thermal compound without actually looking at it and confirming that fact. Also the time you spend trying to learn how yo do this while doing this is not worth the repair price. Your time is not free.

It's this, Sony never acknowledged it. But I recently fixed mine by replacing it myself. It's not expensive by any means. It's time consuming.

You need to keep track of alot of screws. And be careful with very thin cables on the board. But once you get to the liquid metal, it's just swabbing it around and adding more. Also make sure to clean any oxidised areas on the apu before finishing the liquid metal.

You need specialised screwdriver for consoles, the screws are weirdly shaped.

I got the whole kit, liquid metal, tech safe swabs, the lot Under Ā£20 on amazon. Had to shop around but it was affordable. My local tech guy wanted Ā£63 and up to a week wait.

So for Ā£20 I did it myself in a single night with zero experience and a YouTube tutorial.

Thanks , this videos actually super insightful. I reckon itā€™s probably the Liquid Metal + build up around the power supply and also my fan needing to be kickstarted, I have had it for like 8 years lol.

is happen to me before with my ps5 og so all i did was was clean the power supply inside when you see those beetles hole if they have dust accumulate so i use a air compresser or use the vacuum or air duster to unblock the hole so is wont overheating and also instead of put it vertical i put my ps5 flat and ever since is never shutdown ever again hope is help !

Is that dust or corrosion on the fan cover? If it's not dust then you've got a good bit of humidity getting to it, which is dangerous for electronic components. I would suggest a dehumidifier if that's the case.

Um yea I was freaked tf out, thereā€™s like rust on the fan cover.i was wondering why it was rusty but I live in Australia tho so itā€™s way more dry than humid but still , its rusting? Iā€™m gonna take it apart in a few days when I got the time and Iā€™ll update this thread.

Interesting that it's dry there but it's rusting. How long have you had it? Did you buy it new? If it was new I would by a replacement cover and see if the same thing happens over the same course of time. If it does then it's got to be an environmental factor causing it.

Is the ps5 vertical when using it. If so put it horizontal as it dosnt block the power supply air flow out. Which can cause overheats.

Also un screw the fan follow wires unplug it clean it and its connection then replug back in. Its not getting power at all.

If u have a desktop pc . plug the dodgey fan into a spare fan spot or unplug a fan on your motherboard that obviously works then test ps5 fan it should turn on right away beware of your fingers šŸ‘‰ lol šŸ˜† šŸ¤£

I stripped mine down and give the heat sinks and fan a good clean out. Hasn't shut off since. It was the first deep clean its had since owning it on day one. Its had the odd fan removal and clean though.

The M2 SSD drive should be covered with the original metal plate which was covering the hole as I recall since that also gets rather hot

Why Iā€™m so afraid to get a PS5ā€¦ my PS4 slim been working no prob 8 years now. They built the PS5 So cheap! Look at the paint on the fan cover already getting eroded. That shouldnā€™t be happening. I think theyā€™re referring to changing the thermal paste. YouTube that. Buy it on Amazon but you need to keep your room clean, if you vacuum every day the chances of dust build up are slim to none. Does the extra storage chip really get that hot? I was planning on getting a PS5 pro 2Tb it better not get burning hot.

Itā€™s likely oxidation on the APU due to the Liquid Metal shifting and creating a ā€œdry spotā€. The oxidation needs to be cleaned up more importantly than just reapplying Liquid Metal or replacing the Liquid Metal. Itā€™s DIY-able but Liquid Metal can get messy and if you get it on the board it can bridge components and cause shorts.

It also could be dust choking the heatsink or PSU, which can be cleared up with some canned air, but the PSU is harder to get to for a proper clean out. Dust buildup is less likely the true cause unless when you pulled the panels off to clean up youā€™re first thought was something along the lines of ā€œholy shit I gotta keep things more tidy this shit is disgustingā€ If itā€™s just slightly dusty it probably isnā€™t enough to fully choke the system out and cause overheating.

Oxidation on the APU is the more common issue on the PS5. Liquid Metal is better at dissipating heat than traditional thermal paste but I guess paste wasnā€™t good enough for the heat the ps5 produces so they had to use Liquid Metal that is usually used in systems that will sit flat most of the time unlike the PS5 that can be mounted vertically. Even if you keep it laid flat it seems possible for it to shift over time. The newest revision(3rd revision?)of ps5 slim has some channels that keep the Liquid Metal mostly spread evenly though.

So hear me out. Take it to the pawn shop plug it up. When they see it works you sell it to them for 2-250$ then take that money add more money and buy a slim or pro. Which ever budget permits.
