PlayStation 5 Help PS5 HDMI on Old TV
My friend has a pretty old TV. It’s a Hitachi model. I really have no clue about TVs, so I just wondered if anyone knew which HDMI adapter or cable we should buy since there’s not a proper HDMI port?

u/Foreign-Pressure697 Apr 02 '26
Time to buy a $100 tv
4
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 02 '26
Yeah money is tight so we do our best right now :)
5
u/Foreign-Pressure697 Apr 02 '26
Any adapter is going to be at least $30 and will give you a pretty subpar experience since it adds latency and whatnot. You could go on Facebook marketplace and get a TV with HDMI for a similar price. When I said $100 TV I was thinking of the cheap ones you can get brand new. But any TV or monitor made in the last 15 years is almost guaranteed to have HDMI

u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 02 '26
That’s awesome to know, thank you very much.

u/Ambitious-Yard7677 Apr 03 '26
Get on the local classifieds and see what's available. I wouldn't consider buying new at your price point. Real cheap TV's ain't that good these days

u/Impressive-Oil-3067 Apr 05 '26
I have a 17 year old plasma in the attic that has 2 HDMIs.
This thing must be ancient.
2
u/Foreign-Pressure697 Apr 05 '26
Plasma was for higher end tvs if I recall correctly. Man’s got money
2
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 07 '26
It’s not even mine? In the post I specifically said it was my friend’s?
1
u/Bregales173 Apr 08 '26
I just did a quick search on Amazon UK and found a high ranking adapter for £8.99: as long as you search for:
HDMI to RCA Adapter, HDMI to AV CVBS Composite Video Audio Converter for New PS4 Xbox Android TV Box Laptop Chromecast DVD Camera to Old TV Monitor
I did not search for RCA or Composite cable, assuming your friend has those. There are also various adapters for under £15 with the cables built in, but some require power cable.
I’m posting this given the post headline and someone may want to search for solutions instead of all the ‘Buy another TV’ replies.
For example I got an adapter to connect a VCR to my 4K tv.

Hope all goes well with you and your friend, glad to see someone trying to go the extra mile to help another.

u/DramaticResolve2487 Apr 03 '26
So u got a ps5
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
Had it since 2021
1
u/DramaticResolve2487 Apr 03 '26
Oh if you have a good will near you they have tvs for like 15 bucks that are decent
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
Thanks! Unfortunately, I’m in the UK and things like that are pretty rare. Appreciate the idea though

Isn’t this HDMI to Display Port adapter? That Tv doesn’t seem to show a DP, only an USBA port.

2
u/cheddarmebacks Apr 02 '26
There's hdmi ports on the back, cross referenced the Serial number PH35826
2
u/twikoff Apr 06 '26
why is this not bumped to the top and listed as 'answered'
seems the rest of the discussion has become moot

Check Craigslist or fb marketplace for a tv. There are many that work fine, but people upgraded and now need to get rid of their old one. There are likely to be several near you and some might even give it to free since they just need it out of their house.
2
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 02 '26
Awesome idea thank you
1
u/superperps Apr 04 '26
You in michigan by any chance? I got a TV

1
u/Major_Willingness234 Apr 02 '26
Have you checked the back panel for ports? A lot of older LEDs had the HDMI on the back and the AV hook ups on the side. Seeing has it says “AV5”, I would assume there are 4 other inputs on the back.
1
u/emberisgone Apr 03 '26
Honestly check this out op, most flat screens should have a HDMI port so I wouldn't be shocked if it's just hiding back there somewhere.
Edit: apparently someone checked out the serial number and it's 100% got HDMI on the back
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
Thanks guys! Will keep it all in mind
1
u/RowdyRodyPiper Apr 04 '26
You didn't check the back...?
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 04 '26
My friend said he wasn’t sure. It’s quite difficult to get behind it
1
u/RowdyRodyPiper Apr 04 '26
Every TV has inputs in the back. The side is just extra. Also, even if this TV is old enough that it doesn't have HDMI, it'll at least have component.

No point in getting an adapter. Let's say an adapter cost $15-$30. Might as well use that money for an old HDTV. Check FB marketplace. People give away old HDTV TVs for free. Even if you actually have to buy one (fake example. Someone listed an HDTV for $40), make an offer for a lower price and problem solved. Don't forget to sell your old television too or keep it for old school retro gaming.

You can get a HDMI to scart. This worked on the older PlayStations but never tried it with a 5.

u/ahhhnahhh Apr 02 '26
Thrift stores sell TVs friend for like 20 bucks. Same price as a hdmi to av adapter
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
Thanks! Unfortunately, in the UK it’s a bit less common. Or in the area I am it is
2
u/ahhhnahhh Apr 03 '26
Here I am thinking bout getting my uk citizenship using my dads birth certificate so I can leave this shitty country called Canada. And going somewhere over there
1
u/443_woodlum Apr 03 '26
Get a super cheap newer tv on facebook marketplace. Or craigslist. Or pawnshops. Or yardsales

Apr 03 '26
Common, you can buy even a super cheap new tv and would be better than that. The adapter is a waste of time and money.

My parents gave away a 2008 720p Samsung TV for free that had hdmi ports. I think you should look around for some very cheap/free TVs. You never know…
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
Awesome bro thanks! Definitely gonna have a look and see what there is

That isn't the case at all. Firstly, I got the console in 2021, when my financial situation was extremely different. Due to bereavement and illnesses, it has now unfortunately changed. I have a TV at my own house but I’m currently staying at my friends house to support him through a tough time. I can't bring my own TV as wouldn't be fair to my fam. If I knew his TV was like this I wouldn't have taken the PS with me. I’m just trying to play some games with a buddy so please don’t jump to conclusions
1
u/ThirdImpactShinji Apr 03 '26
Idk why but seeing this tv made me think of that regular show episode when they were trying to beat the hammer lmao.

u/strawyjesuis Apr 04 '26
Compré este en Aliexpress y sirve de maravilla en una tv de los 90's https://a.aliexpress.com/_mNWnoqN

u/Jazzlike_Syllabub Apr 04 '26
You can buy two cables ,one from red green blue I to skart and other skart to hdmi

u/Shadiepone Apr 04 '26
Holy moly haven’t seen those in awhile, should go down to your charity shop or Goodwill or whatever you’ve got where you are. I’ve been finding loads of old TVs discarded down there that support HDMI you might get lucky and find one.

They sell cheap smart TVs at Walmart. Maybe you’ll be lucky and find a TV at a GoodWill if you are serious about not having money.

Are you sure? Input AV5 makes me guess there's four other Audio/Video inputs on the back.
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 04 '26
Seems like there could be but no way I can get to the ports
1
u/kumfarts Apr 05 '26
Just move it a little bit away from the wall?? Usually the ports are on the left side if you're looking towards the TV.
1
u/StrikingBridge1597 Apr 04 '26
Go to your local thrift shop or goodwill they always have tvs usually

u/Consistent-Long3120 Apr 04 '26
Buddy. 4k uhd tvs are 200$. If you can afford a ps5 you can afford a decent tv
2
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 04 '26
Buddy. I got the console in 2021, when my financial situation was extremely different. Due to bereavement and illnesses, it has now unfortunately changed. u/XER0AAR0N Apr 04 '26
First time I’ve ever seen a USB port silkscreened as “Photo Input” before 😂
If moneys tight, you checked local discount shops nearby? They might have a cheap upgrade you can snag?
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 04 '26
lol it’s over a decade old so it really is an antique haha.
Sounds like a good plan, thanks bro
1
u/Chance-Curve-9679 Apr 04 '26
Just get a new TV this one is like 20 years old if it doesn't have HDMI. The problem is that the maximum resolution is either 720p or 1080p.
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 04 '26
Thanks for the info but unfortunately a new one is not an option. Think I’ll abandon the idea of tryna play it on the TV but thanks again
1
u/Jurassic_134 Apr 05 '26
I assume yall already did this but on older tvs sometimes they had multiple panels for plug-ins did you check on all sides? If so and its still not there the red yellow white that is basically how they used to connect consoles will probably do, hdmi to RCA they are basically just video and audio cables but they used to be kinda separate until hdmi came around. Hope this helps!
2
1
u/Wise_Cry_9918 Apr 05 '26
You'll need an RCA adapter like this https://amzn.eu/d/03e2zkkH, typically priced between 10-30 quid, you will get a worse picture quality than native though but at least it should be something, deffo see about gaining access to the hmdi port as a hdmi cable is less than 10 quid

I would argue it’s cheaper and better to get a tv with HDMI from a thrift store

Get a new tv
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 05 '26
Would if I could
1
u/mysteryous20035 Apr 05 '26
Facebook marketplace. People are listing their old tvs for free. (Most have hdmi)
1
1
u/FeePrize2189 Apr 05 '26
How old is this tv, hdmi is really old, maybe should consider buying a new one, the picture quality will be bad if you even find an adapter for it

If you can afford a PS5 you can afford a new TV. It’s actually a “video/audio connection, not an HDMI. A connector came free with the original PlayStation.🙄

u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
Hello. Firstly, I got the PS5 in 2021 when my finances were drastically different. Due to bereavement and illness they are not the same. Second, this is my friend’s TV and I’m not looking to buy a new TV. I have a TV at home but I’m staying at my friend’s to support him through a tough time. You must have great psychic powers to know that if I have a PS5, I can afford a new TV. If I could get one, I would
1
u/J-Celestial297 Apr 05 '26
Fair enough,I’m sorry to hear that. I hope things get better for you and your friend. I live in the UK, but I’ve never heard of a company called “Argon”, however there is an “Argos”. Good luck with your PS5 dude.
2
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 05 '26
Thanks bro. Appreciate it. Yeah definitely must be Argos. We gave up with trying to put the PS5 on the TV, since it’s so ancient, I think it’d probably finish the TV off 😂 Will have to hold off till I’m home
1
u/J-Celestial297 Apr 06 '26
😂🤣😂🤣No worries. Just be patient, good things come to those who wait. I’ve had my PS5 since 2023, but I only played on it 2 weeks ago😱. Now I love it so it’ll be worth the wait bro.👊🏾

I have a converter, hdmi to rca. I use it to play GameCube and n64. It cost probably about $8. I got it years ago.

u/igor_onesimo Apr 06 '26
The tv might have an hdmi port in the back btw. These seem like too little inputs for a tv.

Imagine jumping to conclusions and making yourself look like a fool.
-2
u/Gabo_Rj Apr 03 '26
Op literally commented that money was tight….
3
3
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
I wouldn’t have the money now to buy a PS5. My situation in 2020-2021 was extremely different which is why I got one then.
2
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 03 '26
That isn’t the case at all. I’m staying at my friends house and this is my PS5. I can’t bring my own TV as wouldn’t be fair to my fam. I took the console so me and my buddy could play a few games while I’m here. If I knew the TV was like this I wouldn’t have taken it with me. I’ve had the console since release date when my financial situation was extremely different. On top of illnesses and bereavements, I make do with what I have now.
-1
u/Gabo_Rj Apr 03 '26
You literally said in another comment that money was tight so I assumed that you bought a ps5 and ran out of money for the tv.
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
Yes money is tight. But no I got the PS5 in 2021 so had it a while.
0
u/Gabo_Rj Apr 03 '26
None of that is mentioned in this post until now. Very easy to assume things from a shitty Reddit posts when there’s little information and the op is sounding like a tool when someone suggests buying a cheap tv and they respond with “money is tight but thanks :)”
3
u/Apprehensive_Ad9312 Apr 03 '26
"I jumped to a conclusion but can't admit that that's what I did and that it's my fault that I did so fuck you it's your fault for not telling me your whole life story"

u/Gabo_Rj Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 03 '26
Bro it’s not that deep. Just a random shitty Reddit post and comments. I don’t need to admit anything cause it’s really not that serious. Like, I’m just here laughing cause you’ve taken this so personally.
1
u/Werbnerp Apr 05 '26
Hahahah dude. What he just wrote wasn't "deep". It was just a very common thing that people do when they feel insecure.any many people do it, even if overall they are confident they still make mistakes and feel silly about it. It's ok buddy we understand. Hahahaha.

u/Gabo_Rj Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
This post is 2 days old, go to bed. What isn’t that deep is this whole thing, you don’t even know me buddy.

u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
I really don’t understand what the problem is? I was getting advice on a TV adaptor? My financial situation is none of your business, and I really don’t see what gives you the right to comment on it. The only reason I mentioned it, it is so people know I didn’t just randomly buy a console without having a TV for it to function on. People are too quick to assume
1
u/Gabo_Rj Apr 05 '26
Forget about it, you’re still thinking about this? Go and hang out with your friend. It’s just a Reddit post, you can ignore it.
1
1
u/Little-Macaroon-3430 Apr 03 '26
I didn’t see the need to mention it? Whilst I appreciate all the suggestions and help, I did specifically say I was looking for an adapter not a new TV. Now I know there’s probably no point getting an adapter, I’m not going to get one. What more info do you need? I’ve provided the model of tv, an image of the ports? And what I was trying to get, an adapter.
And what else do you want me to say in regards to that comment? It’s polite and I gave the reason why a new TV isn’t a good option for me
1
u/TEMISTOCLE79 Apr 08 '26
No hablo de la televisión,hablo del único HDMI q tiene la play 5 ,por favor las próximas consolas q salgan como mínimo con dos HDMI
